Starless Umbra Review

I cannot recall the version number off of the top of my head, but I finished the version I had. The demo ended after a climactic encounter in that island temple if that tells you anything about which version it was.

Popularity And The State Of This Community

I personally think one of the problems is people are afraid to express true opinions. Look at any game's comment page and there's 70% chance you'll see the first comment saying "This game is awesome!" regardless of its actual quality. When every game is touted as "awesome" it becomes much, much harder to sift through the community to find actual quality, and people are much less willing to actually try to play anything.

This is a developer community. People (hopefully) aren't here to hear mindless praise. They are here to have their work critiqued so that they may improve it. Am I wrong?

Edit: I totally read SNEWS

The Most Important Aspect of a Game

Perhaps the greatest goal of a game is to make something happen that is truly a memorable experience for the player. Fun varies from person to person and game to game, but in general, I think many players, especially in action games and RPGs, enjoy the feeling of being awesome or badass. Establish a clear set of rules for the game world, and allow within those rules for the player to be able to do awesome things that they will remember forever.

Remember the first time you flew in Super Mario Bros 3? Awesome. Remember how you fought the final boss of Kingdom Hearts 2 by throwing skyscrapers at him? Also awesome. Don't be afraid to let your players do incredible things. Limit what they can do, but never let them feel limited.

Master of the Wind Review

I played both the most recent Super Pack and earlier less well-balanced versions of each arc, and did notice that balance had improved dramatically. I even beat the dreaded Danika battle and it wasn't all that bad. However there are still a few issues, notably the final battle with Sparrow in Arc V is almost entirely luck-based. The balance of agility between the two characters is too fine and thus who acts first each round is entirely random. If sparrow happens to rattle off two attack spells in a row, an averagely leveled Shroud is very, very dead. The Auto-haste accessory I created helped a little, but I still died many times. Still, kudos for having the tenacity to march onwards with your project instead of forever looking back.

In regards to Stoic, I didn't get the sense that he became cynical, more that he had given up and felt that his beliefs didn't have a place in the world, rather than resenting having his dream taken away from him. Almost all of his actions in the past (aside from a few bouts of self-doubt that likely represent the cynicism you were talking about) are identical to what he'd do in the present. His identity is even revealed to us by the use of his ubiquitous catchphrase “I know all,” which at this point is completely out of character for him. “I know all” is something you earn the right to say by living for a thousand years, and doesn't seem something like the passive, indecisive Zeno we are introduced to a few scenes later. He also continually looks the other way regarding Volrath's (the character, not you) less honorable actions but condemns Kovak before even learning that he has done anything wrong, which reflects a certain inconsistency in his viewpoints about judging people by their actions.

But as much fun as I have debating, I am not going to tell you how to write your character, as his development is entirely your prerogative. Stoic is not a bad character by any means and is one of the most interesting figures in a game full of great characters. I look forward to seeing where this all goes in the concluding arc(s).
