SVIEL'S PROFILE

It turns out that I really dislike words. Not surprisingly, I recently switched from a CS Engineering major to Creative Writing; practically left my degree at the altar.

I like fine-tuning mechanics and writing long novels on the beach.

Balancing development, forum contributions, and marketing?

I sleep 4 hours a day and check RMN mostly during meal breaks q_q

Referencing a face graphic

I'm fairly certain there's a 'change face graphic' command built in. Does that not cover your needs?

It's in System->ChangeActorGraphic in the event command menu.

Deimos Review

I always play RM games in window mode with wordpad on the ready. Immediately after I finish, I pop up to the top of the document and write part I. It makes it really easy to write relevant info when it's still so fresh in my mind :3

It's hard to see how weakness is only 3x damage, but I suppose it's probably due to defense calculations. The OHKO or 33% damage goal sounds like it would be alright, but it was definitely not the case in my experience.

And yes! Subtlety is the salt of storytelling~ Nothing speaks louder than words unsaid.

Would this be playable?

Good, because there's no way that was playable...

How important are extra playable characters?

Eh, I should mention that a Fire Emblem style large cast is ok with me. Everyone gets a bit of development and I can pick and choose who I want to see more of. The important thing is that each character is fully built, so if I wanted to get to know them, I could.

I haven't played Suikoden, but from what you've said, it's similar to that?

How important are extra playable characters?

As long as there aren't more characters than I care about, I like it.

The Tales series does a pretty good job of giving ~6-8 characters that are all very developed and have interactions that further development even more. I might not use every char, but I can at least be glad they exist.

I do not like the 'deluge of characters' style where, even if everyone had been interesting, there wasn't enough time in the game to get to know them. A single bland character can ruin a cast.

Art Principles in Game Graphics: Making Pretty Stuff

You should post this as an article instead of just a forum post. It's really extensive and really well described.

I agree.

This is definitely article material.

What is Konstandin? Should I be afraid to look it up?

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

I wanted to make some 'simple' Link skills, and I had it working well enough, but since I'm so far ahead on my pessimistic Dev schedule, I was able to add in two more characters...which made everything hellish.

It took ~3 hours to plan and event the attacks at least. I had to make sure that I knew who was in the active party and account for everything from characters dying between choosing the skill and using it or the player missing an input. Then, I wanted to be sure that the skill would be useful no matter who the player chose to have in the party rather than disabling it, and rather than randomize it, I retouched the whole combat system to support meaningful strategy behind any party formation.

But, since that wasn't enough, it also had to be simple enough for players who Do Not Care to handle, so I had to make sure all of the back-end stuff was safely out of sight but easily recognizable for anyone who looked.

The end result is marvelous, thankfully, but the process was a PAIN. Sort of like childbirth. Probably.

How long does it take you to make a tileset?

I'm rather wary about spending huge numbers of hours making a custom set that looks worse than the sets I have on hand (RTP or public sets) so I steer clear of it. It seems more important to invest time in the areas of the game that should be providing the draw, which are not graphics-related, in my case. Granted, this means I have a somewhat limited ability to create atmosphere, but I can work with that.

So, to answer your question, it takes me forever. Thus, I don't do it, at least not yet.
