I hope it's open source..

You've asked me already, it's GPL3. The link to the Subversion repository is in the description.

Alpha Test

Is mode 7 supposed to be in the alpha?

(PS: Hitting C or Backslash toggles between normal view and perspective view in the map view test)

although the test play window was huge with no obvious way to resize or close.

It was huge? What is your screen resolution? It should fit even on my netbook screen. You'll get to set the video scale for the engine later as a player setting, though.

And I did get that error when trying to test play. I had to close and reopen a few times before it worked.

Yeah, hopefully my fix reduces this from happening in the next release.

Okay it stop saying what it was saying.. but now it acts like it's about to start, and then stops working, i check to get the details of the issue, and this is what it shows me.

That information means nothing to me. You can factory reset by deleting the C:\Users\<Your Name>\Roaming\AppData\rpg20xx folder and try again. Apart from it failing to compile, can you get it to crash in other ways?

Alpha Test

The mode 7 in the SNES was actually a HBlank effect since normally you can only scale and rotate the background. They would change the scale at every line to get that perspective effect. In RPG 20XX, it's simple polygons. Your video card barely knows the difference between the two modes, actually.

Alpha Test

The next update will have the file copy function replaced with an OS specific method, it might fail much less. I'm not sure what the original problem was, though.

Alpha Test

Reset the editor and try again. It randomly does that and I'm not sure exactly why yet.

It's missing that, zoom, shift+click, space+click, etc.

Ace does not officially have it.. it had to be scripted in sadly..

So they're charging you 70 bucks for a feature you have to do all the work for anyways? One would think if you paid someone to make an engine for you, they would make the engine for you.

Mode Seven

Can the angle/depth be variable?

Yes. You can adjust tilt (going from 0 to target tilt is the typical animation transition from normal mode to perspective mode, like in FF4). You can adjust pan, the rotation or direction the camera points in. And you can adjust roll which tilts the scene left and right in an odd way. Of course don't forget the zoom which moves the camera in and out from the focal point.

Do events pop up when you place them down?

I'll let you set the Z of each event. Tiles will have default Z = 0 and events will have default Z = 1. If Z = 0, then the object lays flat to the map, otherwise it's on the ground at Z = 1 or begins to rise in the air for Z > 1 (because airships need to fly up and be in the sky).

I just realized you will need pixel movement much earlier, so that feature has been brought much closer. Why? What if you want pivot movement where you walk forward and backward and turn the camera with left and right? Or flying in an airship?

Sounds like VX Ace has a dumbed-down and limited version of what I had in mind.

My engine would let you create backgrounds and configure them as their own section in the database. You'll be able to set their behavior as well as any parallax gradients (remember those from the SNES?). The title and gameover screens are selected from backgrounds, so you could have one as simply the title.

You won't even have to touch any scripts to do it- just assign them!
