I don't want to argue with people regarding the amount of playtime someone "needs" to make to write a review of a game... AGAIN. -_-

author=Liberty

Well, I guess it's a matter of perspectives. Even your "How to write 300 words" guide reads that way to me. Even though the purpose of the guide is exactly that 'how to write 300 words' and not necessarily 'how to write reviews', I think the point still stands.

For example. Point number 2 is called "question everything" and it says: "Oft-times people will put a line or two that they liked something... but not actually give anything else beyond that. This is silly..." Another tiny flaw of DragnFly's review is that it does not touches upon the sound/music. It only says that the music is good at the very top. But how is it good? I, as a potential player, do not know.

I'm not saying the reviews is bad per se. I'm just pointing out things that I think would be better if they were encouraged more. Not enforced. Encouraged... I don't know who is behind the review queue, if it's you, Solitayre, or both. But if upon reading a review for approval you guys notice this, maybe you could drop a line to the reviewer asking them to expand on things a little. That would be swell.

Well, like I said, there's still room to include that. I don't think there's anything wrong with the various review formats that exist out there. First impressions, bug reports, etc. I think everything has it place. But I guess my point is, should everything carry a score? ...More to the point, the game is still a demo for what I understand. Many agree demos should not be rated because how discouraging it can be to some developers. So maybe if the review didn't have a score, the developer would not have gone the deep end. We'll never know. =P

I played Chrono Trigger for about 30 minutes before I had to quit, MAN that game sucks!!!

Today I learned that Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are all 1 star games

What's funny is that Sailerius would probably say something like that. xD ...Which is why I don't trust his ability to judge games.

I don't want to argue with people regarding the amount of playtime someone "needs" to make to write a review of a game... AGAIN. -_-

While I don't agree that a game needs to be played to completion or for any specific amount of time in order to review it, I think you need to experience everything the game has to offer. That's may be a very difficult or impossible thing to assess exactly, but I think is more about the mentality. You need to give the game a good, honest shake, even if it hurts.

One issue I have with Dragnfly's review of BW is that he admits to have dropped the game before getting to the gameplay. In cases like that I think it's due diligence to ask the developer for save files that grant you access to the part you couldn't get to yourself. Of course there's still room to say "I dropped the game" "I don't recommend the game" but if you don't evaluate the game as a whole, I wouldn't call that a review. That's an "opinion piece" maybe. And I wouldn't attach a score to that either.

...I don't get it. We have like a dozen or so guides about reviewing, some written by the staff or well regarded members of the site; And they all say the same thing: "Cover everything". However many reviews I see are paragraphs upon paragraphs about this one thing the reviewer didn't like and a "Oh yeah, there's graphics and music too, I guess" if anything. =/

Race and Gender in Games

Some vagrant thoughts on this. Sorry if I'm ruining the thread now that is all shit and giggles, though. xD

Starting from a few pages ago... The way I see it, most people do not have a problem with representing minorities. They understand this is important to some people. They want to do well by them. But they also want the freedom to write their stories/characters in an organic way. In way that feels true to them. And different people will approach this in different ways.

However it seems that not even their best efforts or intentions are ever good enough... If the immediate reaction towards someone making blank slate type characters so everyone feels free to fill them in as they wish (which is very valid), is to go "Erasure!" "Defaultism!" and all that jazz, then is no wonder why people is "scared" to approach these subjects.

But you know? Threads like these are the perfect place to express ideas like that, right? After all this should be a place for everyone to learn about what other points of view exist out there. It's not called the "market of ideas" for nothing. You browse, you make your pick, you take with you... But the problem is people don't always keep those ideas to themselves.

Moving on onto more recent posts... People like you and I may not agree on much. But believe me when I say that I'm sorry if people have brought shit to your game. HOWEVER. I invite you to think if you have ever done the same to others. Ever called a game garbage? Ever told someone to "grow up"? Because guess what? That's rude too. That's uncalled for too. And I see it all the time, in comments, in reviews... So, some consistency would work wonders towards a better mutual understanding.

And I know, I know. something something false equivalence, something something punching up... But, yeah. No. I know you fancy yourselves as the only ones who can see through the deception and all that, but the truth is that you don't. You don't speak for everyone. So you don't get to define what things like "basic human decency" are; Yo don't get to decide what is or is not an "appropriate" design choice; And specially you don't get to tell others to think as you do in order to "better" themselves. You just don't.

Now, we've been at this for like 3+ years. Has it been worth it? Isn't it time to start looking past the rhetoric and start to working together? Like I said at the beginning, most people do not have a problem with minorities, But you have to be willing to meet them half-way in how to go about it, if we want to start moving forwards. Please, tell me that's what everyone wants.

[Poll] I HATE THE POETS

Baldur's Gate gets an expack, and also people SUCK

To be fair, if you dish it, you can take it. If you take a shot at a group of people not exactly known for thinking before acting, and you then act surprised when they retaliate against you, I don't know what to tell you. If I didn't know any better, I would even say this was done on purpose to draw attention away from the fact that the game is so buggy... But that being said, not that that excuses their behavior. Trying to hurt a game by leaving bad reviews is a shitty thing to do no matter what side it comes from.

Discrimination within the narrative

lol I never thought I'd see the day in which I would be shot down preemptively. xD Weird, but, Ok... And hey, whatever floats your boat. I just find it much easier for people to trust you, when you trust them; To understand you, when you understand them; To respect you, when you respect them. You get the idea... So, idk. See you on the other side, I guess...

New policies for 2016 and beyond! (April Fools Day)

Not only that. I was expecting some kind of follow-up in this thread but the day went by and nothing. Lamest prank ever. =P

New policies for 2016 and beyond! (April Fools Day)

So nothing new really. You're just finally following through with your threats from a few years ago, in regards of policy...

No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise.

Evil must be punished. People must be told.

...Of course. Must protect this new utopia.

One more body amongst foundations makes little difference.

Well, what are you waiting for? Do it!

DO IT!

Anime for someone who doesn't really 'like' anime.

Heh; Of course I'm aware that anime is more than just this one thing. I tried to give that away by putting the word between air-quotes but alas... The point is, do we really seek anime for what it has in common with media from all around the world, or for what sets it apart? Again, "distinctly Japanese" was the criteria set by the OP to share anime in this thread. And I just couldn't see what was so distinctive about Monster. I'm not saying it's bad or anything, just probably not what the OP is looking for.

Anyway, has anyone seen Fate Stay Night? Is it any good? It looks interesting, but I have trouble getting into lengthy anime. .-.

Anime for someone who doesn't really 'like' anime.

I did not understand "Girl who leapt through time". The ending is confusing. I immediately googled about it and found some theories as to what may have happened. But as it's always the case with theories, none was a complete fit. I genuinely think that story was rushed, it tried to copy the book a bit too much or something, but it didn't came out right... Still a fun watch, though.

Also, is "Monster" really an "anime"? Or is it just your average drama/horror story in anime format? I mean, what makes it "distinctly Japanese" as the OP puts it? I started watching it because many people here recommended it, but I got bored after a few episodes. I suppose it picks up later on like most things, but, is it worth it? ...Maybe I like anime more than I thought I did. xD
