Boy do the rejections hurt, but the idea is to get over them as soon as possible.
The trick is to ask people out before you're in love/infatuated with them and when you're merely interested :P.

Aprilschild: It's the not being able to let go mentality. They fear that in the event of a rejection, they will have made complete fools of themselves and lose that net-of-hope
they've made for themselves. The thought of never being able to communicate even indirectly anymore with the object of their desire holds them back from being able to actually ASK them if going out is even an option. It doesn't occur to them to just ask them out and accept whatever the outcome happens to be.
It's a self-destroying cycle of keeping their desires to themselves. They don't realize this is the exact reason they AREN'T getting any.
I guess I get it, but I'm as shy as it gets, and I've never had any trouble asking someone I liked out. For the record, it's almost always gotten me a date/s.o., and never once ended poorly (i.e. those who said no remained my pals and I got over it).
I don't think it's any "easier" for girls to ask guys out either... or am I wrong?

I don't get why boys can't ask girls out. What's the worst that could happen? She says no, and you're in the same situation you're in now - single. No one is going to put you in prison or send a dragon to eat you.

author=kentona link=topic=2557.msg47464#msg47464 date=1227819627author=Max McGee link=topic=2557.msg47431#msg47431 date=1227810545Very true. You have to trudge through 90% of the chaff in his books to get to that 10% of golden, exciting, riveting writing. In all of the books (except 10, which is a complete stinker) there is always one or two really good moments.I tried reading The Wheel of Time books, but I couldn't get past the second one. They weren't bad... just kind of slow? I don't remember much, it was some years ago.
Now I haven't read The Wheel Of Time but in general, one thing that I learned in writing school is that yes, writing that the average, educated reader finds "slow" or "hard to get through" more often than not really is bad. This is part of why (you may attempt to lynch me now) J.R.R. Tolkien is not actually a very good writer, in terms of technique and craft.
Plus, I need closure.
I couldn't even get through the first book in the series. It could be what Max is saying, that it's badly written, or it could be that its length is just so daunting as to force people to psych themselves out.
I have a tough time getting through Gone With the Wind, but that's still a good book (imho). The same with a lot of classics.

They don't let us read books in my classes. Only plays and screenplays :'(. Though the original script for Apocalypse, Now! is quite interesting...
Uhh... what?
I just meant that I don't have the time for anything that isn't classwork, lol.

Lighting Tips?
There is a pretty good/awesome thread on this started by Max somewhere when he asked basically the same question. It's how I learned to do this.
If you want and can wait a little bit (i.e. a little less than a month) I can so a few for ya. They're usually fairly fast, but right now I'm swamped with homework.
(I did the ones for Ruptured Soul and I know y'all liked that game's atmosphere)
