Mid-Year Misao Voting Reminder

...or at least it would've been. Is there a reason the Misao system has no voting categories right now? I was hoping to encourage people to take advantage of its all-year vote availability and make a few of my own (for once). So...what's up with it?

(I put this in announcements because it could become one)

The Void

I proposed this once before back when I was still a (useless) staff member, and I wanted to bring it up again in the hopes it might be implemented with RMN4.

It's a simple concept, really; a division in the games database. A threshold of quality above which games would be publicly available, and below which, would be in The Void.

The Void would not be the same as an unapproved game page that couldn't be viewed by the public. Rather, it would be a place where games that need work could be seen and given feedback for their improvement. They would not appear on the front page or turn up in database searches, but they would still be accessible for aspiring game makers to get the criticism they need.

So instead of games being 'approved' or 'unapproved', they'd either be 'Available' or 'Voided'. The title 'The Void' is meant to carry a negative connotation, as the games listed inside it are lacking in quality. Casual players won't be likely to check these games out unless they're just in it for shits and giggles. Of course, the place would have to be carefully moderated from trolls seeking easy pickings. Due to the kind of attention they would draw in such a place, it would be the concern of the games' creators to improve their projects and get them out of The Void. If they are willing to put in the effort and make the changes necessary, they can ask to be considered for admission into the main database after doing so. And the developers who don't care enough to make their games good would just rot in The Void for all eternity.

If this system is possible, it'd also make moderating the submission queue a bit easier, as the decision between accept/deny is more difficult to make. Games that are obviously bad would all just get Voided.

How do you like your touch encounters?

All right, ever since seeing Strangeluv's utter hatred of random encounters, I was inspired to look into the touchy kind instead. I basically had two beefs with this variety of encounter before:

1. the events can clog up the map, block passages, etc.

2. it's possible to clear the map, leaving no monsters left to fight at all

But instead of being pigeonholing myself, I designed ways around these two gripes. First, I made it so that enemy groups respawn. When you defeat them, the event turns transparent for a short while (thirty seconds) and reanimates later. This way, there is never enemy extinction. But that's not all; the events can also be passed through while transparent, so if an errant monster wandered into a one-tile passageway, its removal would not be difficult. However, it would still require that that encounter be fought, and I know some people just HATE being forced to fight SO MUCH. So I took it a step further. I set it such that, if the monster party is run from instead of defeated, the event still turns transparent. It stays down for a fraction of the time (three seconds), but it's just long enough for the hero to move away.

Finally, there's the issue of grinding. If the player breezed past all these touch encounters because they're lazy or something and hit a wall at the boss, the encounter respawn time would make grinding a chore, right? WELL, that's why I made it such that if the player presses enter while standing on top of a transparent encounter, they'll be given the option to fight it again. Defeating it/running from it will reset its respawn timer, too.

So, what do you think of this method of handling touch encounters? Do you have any suggestions on ways to improve it? Are there other kinds you prefer? I have yet to actually implement the system, so any oversights I can correct now would be most helpful.

Better than Paint

So, I've been enjoying my brand spankin' new computer and getting used to the subtle differences between Windows XP and Windows 7. But there's one program I just can't stand in it...

The new Paint sucks.

I suppose it was barely passing before anyway, but now it's almost unbearable to work in. So if you please, would you recommend me something better? I'd mostly be using it for basic sprite creation/editing; nothing too serious business. I'd also prefer (read: require) that it be free. Which program(s) have worked best for you?

hali's 1000th

So, I just posted my 1000th deviation on deviantArt. I decided to draw each panel with the little improvements that built up over time to where I am now.

When you get tired of scrolling back and forth on the forums like an idiot, just click here.

Chances are you guys won't really get this page, as it is very esoteric and a lot less meaningful to those who haven't followed my past comics. The focus isn't on a punchline, but on the subtle improvements from panel to panel that culminate in the borderless, full color one at the end.

Also, this isn't my 1000th comic page, because my deviation count includes things like ref sheets, pumpkins, and other retarded stuff. It also does NOT include things like video game screenshots and shit too embarrassing to post normally. But STILL! I've come pretty far since I drew my first page back in 2004. The stuff I'm putting out now is much better, but I know I still have plenty of room for improvement.

I've built up quite a following on dA in all my time there, but honest criticism is hard to come by when everybody just loves what you do so much. But I know you guys wouldn't think twice about tearing me a new one, and I'm sure you wouldn't spare any of the toe-stomping details, either.

So now that you see where I've been and where I am now, does anyone have anything to suggest besides give up you loser? This isn't so much about this piece specifically as it is where I can improve on from here. If you're going to critique any part of it, the last panel should be your focus, as that's about the quality level of my other comics now.

What makes you laugh?

I mean besides your own snarky forum trolling.

What makes you laugh? What sort of things do you find amusing? What's your sense of humor like? It's something I tend to wonder about. I myself have a fairly dry sense of humor, but I can appreciate a wide variety of jokes even if they don't make me laugh.

So, yeah, what tickles your funny bone? Feel free to post examples, too!

Review Just One Game

This is the thread where you review just one game. Yes, you! Make a post saying "Hey RMN, I'm looking for a game to review!" Then take the first request you get and leave it at that.

Basically, this thread saves you the trouble of managing your own review thread, while also effectively thwarting the hassle of an ever-growing backlog.

So, go ahead! Take a request! Surely you can handle reviewing just one game!

hali entered an art tournament

but hali your art sucks ass

A specific kind of art tournament known as an OCT (original character tournament). Basic premise, artists submit a character of their own creation, are paired up against each other, and create a comic in which their character overcomes their opponent's. The entries are submitted and judged, then the better of the two proceeds to the next round.

The one I entered is
! Yes, it's hosted on deviantArt.

This is the second OCT I've been involved in. As some of you may know, I made it all the way to the finals of the last one I participated in! This time around, I decided I'd let you guys in on the fun.

Linked below are the tourney account, character I entered with, and the intro and first round pages. I've already completed my round one entry, and the round's deadline is set for the 14th of March. So we have some time before we'll find out if I move on or not. In the meantime, you can enjoy what I wrote and tell me why I don't stand a chance.

And yes, it is a Pokémon OCT.

Big Sky Carnival

My character, Rayne Daunce.

The rest of the pages are linked together through the artist comments on dA.

Wish me luck!

Anyone know how to edit/loop midis?

Because I have a handful of songs that I'm using in my project that work fine as they are, but are too long, don't loop properly, etc.

I've looked at midi editors before, and I tend to go cross-eyed trying to figure them out. So, is anyone able to help me with this?

Hi! Ate! Us!

So, I've been feeling kinda down lately. I don't usually do this sort of thing, and when I do, I don't usually announce it! But more and more I'm feeling the need for a reprieve from all things internet.

Thus, I'm taking a hiatus. I won't be on the internet for an entire week. I think it'll do me some good to get away from it all.

So...yeah. Bye.
