Old/Lost RpgMaker Games - SegNin's Rare/Obscure RM Games Request Topic

I'd recommend you check out the 2014 list of "Favorite RM Games of All Time."
https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/14780/

A couple of things to keep in mind about the list:
- Most of the games included are not finished. That doesn't make them less fun to play, but don't be surprised if some just suddenly end.
- While I would recommend virtually all of the games near the top of the list, some of the games further down are definitely more fondly remembered than actually good. So don't get discouraged if you try something out and think "that's crap." As someone who's been floating around the RPG Maker sphere since 2003, trust me when I say there's a reason those games deserved the praise they did, but maybe don't start by going through a "best of" 2001 releases.
- These won't all be as amazing as OneShot.
- If you can't find a game, ask the thread! We should really ensure we have a download of all these games anyway.
- Since the list is from 2014, I'd definitely call this a "classics" list. Don't consider it representative of the modern era.

Some notes about the games:
- While I believe A Blurred Line deserves its top billing, it really hasn't aged well. Go ahead and try it out, but keep in perspective that the original came out only a little after the Sega Dreamcast.
- While I'm on the topic of A Blurred Line, its creator, Lysander86, has four games on the list.
- Ara Fell is now complete and available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/440540/Ara_Fell/
- Starless Umbra is way down on the list, but is truly a remarkable feat of RPG gaming. The story (from what I've played) is meh, but just an outstanding experience otherwise. It's pretty hard to find a copy now days (starlessumbra.com sadly just has the first chapter and prologue), but I'd definitely recommend you give it a look sometime in the future.
- Legion Saga on the list actually refers to the trilogy, not the game. If you try it out, start with Legion Saga II, which was easily the strongest in the trilogy.
- A similar thing is true of Laxius Power. The entry on the list is for the series, not the specific game. The first game is terrible, while the third game is pretty decent (if you enjoy the type of game play it provides).
- Exit Fate is fantastic and definitely worth the look.
- Shout out to both Sunset Over Imdahl and Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis for being less like a convention rm2k(3) RPG.

Some games to consider that aren't on the list:
- Velsarbor is the most technically masterful rpg2000 game ever made. And despite being entirely in German is still totally worth the play. Seriously.
- Legacies of Dondoran (all original music)
- Paradise Blue (all original art)
- Pirates (it's a side scroller, not an RPG, and is pretty sweet)

I'm really excited to see a YouTuber interested in rpgmaker. I know a ton of rpgmaker garbage gets created, but there's also some pretty cool stuff too.

Progress Report

Given that I've been around since before Legion Saga 3 came out, it's fun to see another oldie getting back into the game. Good luck with the expanded team.

EquipBattle.gif

To answer the question posed by the image, I'm personally not a fan of the "change equipment during battle" because it tends to be either tedious to manage or useless. What I prefer is when you "equip" a couple weapons before a battle (say 2-4) that you use during battle as alternatives for your Attack command (so you may have a Short Sword and Long Sword commands rather than Attack). This setup allows a game to more greatly differentiate weapons while not being tedious for the player to take advantage of that differentiation.

That's just my opinion though. I could see someone arguing the opposite, in that having to setup multiple weapon slots is itself tedious and they would rather only take the effort when the need arises in a battle itself.

Sprite Sheet Creator

Glad it was helpful!

Image 256 Color Converter

author=Rose_Guardian
For some reason this isn't working correctly for me. It keeps only doing some of the image, and not the whole. What I am doing wrong?

You are doing everything correctly. The program is designed to only convert images which already have 256 colors or less into rm2k(3) compatible images. It intentionally does not attempt a "closet match" because the goal is perfect conversion. If your image has more than 256 colors, part of the image will be missing.

In your case, instead of "perfect match" you'll want "closet match" conversion. Many people use Irfanview for that, since it's free and easy. This post here will explain that process and give a link to the program: https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/converting-your-resources-to-256-colour-images-using-irfanview.40332/

I might as well add that this program was originally created to help people convert resources that were simply in the wrong format (such as when someone uses paint to edit something), since you can just drag/drop stuff rapidly and convert everything. If that is your goal, I don't believe there is a better program available.

[RM2K3] Question about pictures

If you check for hero location, you can check if the map has changed and react accordingly. To use the common event below, after teleporting simply show the name of the location using standard picture number (in the example below, I used 1) with 100% transparency. No need to call an event or any other action from the teleport event. And that's it.

The event itself checks to see if the map has changed, and if it has begin the fade in animation. It then checks two more times (each time after one second) and adjusts if the map has again changed. This way at most the showing of the name will be delayed 1.1 seconds. If you encounter lag within the game, you can increase the "Wait: 0.1 seconds" at the end to something longer. You can also increase the length of time the image stays on screen by adding more "Wait: 1.0 seconds" and conditional branches.

Also, if you're going to make a lot of text based pictures, I highly recommend the Picture Text Creator. Seriously.

P6Mimics.gif

Two-part fight works well, since it gives you the option to keep the mimic while still having a "monster in a box" fight with more monster variety. I was just checking what you were going with here.

P6Mimics.gif

That reminds me a bit of the old "egg" enemies from FF4. Do you have any plans of allowing the player to avoid or manipulate the next round of monsters, or do you just consider it a two-part fight?

I've a question for this thread. So, back in 2012, I was a tester for a game called Memories Neverlasting by sbester. It's a game made in TsuK3 and is a mix of RPG and Visual Novel elements. A download was never made public, but, a private download was provided to testers. I still have the demo from those 6 years ago.

I suppose my question amounts to what interest this thread (or the archive I sometimes read about here) might have in a game like that?

Speaking for myself, I think it would be great to have the demo in the archive of RPG Maker games. However, since the demo was not initially intended for public audiences and sbester I still relatively active, he should probably be asked before it is released.

Other RPG Maker games that inspire you?

I'd like to echo The Way, strongly (I never finished it, but the worldbuilding in the first few episodes alone was incredible....

The world building in The Way is truly among the greatest in RPG history (professional or amateur). I also loved how "battle styles" were used as an actual story telling technique. That's not to say the game didn't have it's flaws. But it certainly had its high points.
