I'm a college student. I like games. I'm making some with Super Mario Bros X. I also like to watch Let's Plays. Mostly BoboTheVulture and MysteriousJG.

I honestly just want to make a bunch of small short simple levels, that serve nothing more than intermediate paths between more content-rich levels.
This sounds pretty ideal actually, there look to be quite a few places where a region could stand an additional simple level or two.

That's pretty much all I did as well, aside from Blood Temple, which I think would be a good way to end World 1.

RMN World Wiki!

"When asked to give a name to Nova Ball, nin8halos chose "Poo Poo Butt Butt." This was disregarded and halibabica went with what Isrieri called it instead."

This is true.

Which makes me wonder how we would do something similar to Mario's Mansion but with castles. I mean, in mansions there is plenty of variety, such as bathrooms, basements, attics, bedrooms, ballrooms, pantries, foyers, gardens etc.

What kind of differences do we have with castles?
Dungeon? Roof? Garden?
See the problem there?

Someone's obviously never lived in a castle. Peasant.

You could build the game around the context of each level being part of one greater, overarching castle, and enforce this in people's submissions. The Mario's Mansion series did this to varying degrees of success. The original Castles game also had that as the general context, but the game didn't feel like it was all part of one castle.
Yeah, this is probably the best way of doing it.

Looks like Crystalis is on a lot of people's lists. I should check it out.

Just don't plan it for June.

Oh God I've said too much.

Is that when the Mario X Street Fighter project begins? Or is it the Citizen Kane project?

I'd participate in another Castles project. So go guaugeug people's interest and I'll hop on.

Rogue-likes for the Less Hardcore

You could try the PS1 game Azure Dreams. It's somewhere between a dungeon crawler and a roguelike. It's also fairly forgiving and the town building is cool.

I'd forgotten about that game. I played it to completion a few years back. It was a neat little game, but I didn't really enjoy it that much.

Recettear counts! It's also amazing. You will spend most of your time not playing the roguelike portion of the game, though.

I wouldn't really consider it a roguelike, even just the dungeon crawling part. But it is a very good game.

Bubble Bobbleis damn good. Surprisingly so. You would think its just pretty decent and okay looking at it, or playing it for the first time. But once you get hooked on it and actually look at the meat and potatoes that comprise it's design (and moreso on the arcade) its pretty genius.

It's a good game, but damn does it get hard. I've never had the chance to play it 2 player though. And that's really how it's meant to be played.

But over all the other games I've played, my absolute favorite is probably Gimmick! The version I'm thinking of is on the famicom though, so that might not count. BUT WHATEVER.

I only became aware of this game recently. Haven't played it, but it look's interesting, and they really went all out with the music.
