I'm done with lighting overlays for my maps.

More like nixing those sunbeam overlays and generally just lightening up my fog overlays. What with my pixel-based graphics for Tristian, I don't exactly want to hide it, now do I? =)

RMN Developer Profiles

I think we should try and rate each other and use the average for our 'official' ranking. Obviously, we can't rate the newer users here because we have no idea what kind of games they'd design, but it would be interesting how the regular RM crowd rate each other. =)

Soul Sunder

You finally achieved another milestone. =) Congrats, Nova. Not everyone here can claim to have had two featured games.

The Lion still roars

Oh, defs. I love it myself. XD

The Lion still roars

As much as I want to make a 15-hour epic, I simply don't have the free time. When I was working on Enelysion, I had plenty of it ( often averaging 8 hours a day working on it ). I can only really work on the game weekends now. And a 7-hour RPG is far more manageable as well.

I reached that 10-hour mark from my older game, but I had to admit, I started getting bored with some parts of the game, and it could have bloated the game's playtime. Tristian's alter ego Ira may or may not appear as well. Same for Lance.

As for those FE portraits, they just suit the tone/mood of the game better. And because of my Wacom, doing expressions shouldn't be as much of a problem as what it was with my mouse. I also need a lot more practice doing my own art before it gets anywhere near the level that I want it to be. Given that Radiant Dawn has something like 70+ full body portraits, I can mix and match stuff to my liking and edit them as I go along ( the game has something like 60+ playable units alone. A waste really, given that half of them don't even have personalities ).

Don't worry about the maps, Nova. I have something like half a dozen backups on my PC. XD I'm still redoing all of them though. Mapping isn't a chore for me, thankfully.

And thanks for that PM, unity. I really needed to talk about some stuff. =)

@alichains: Apart from being too barren, those cliffs are far too straight and therefore looks unnatural, so you might want to change that. Also, some patches of sand or dirt, or even an oasis in the middle wouldn't be a bad idea either. Seeing palm trees randomly scattered about really doesn't make sense.

rpgmaker horror games nowadays

None of the RM horror games these days scare me. Only SnowOwl's stuff can give me shivers down my spine just by looking at the images of his games. Every RM horror nowadays seems to have a scared loli/ and or cute artwork. Which is the last thing I'd expect from the genre. Most of the developers can't even do atmosphere properly. Most of them involve sticking the protagonist in a haunted house/hospital etc. with excessive use of lighting effect scripts and the usual cheap jumpscare.

Yet it seems to be the most popular genre on this site, and it irks me.

How do you decide what to do and in what order?

I tend to start with my characters first, with maybe a concept sketch thrown in for good measure, while fleshing out their personalities ( sometimes I will look up astrological signs to get an idea of certain traits, since it's surprising how accurate it can be and can add depth to your cast ) and how they will interact with each other. Having character dynamism ( whether they have chemistry on-screen or behave as battle partners ) can play a huge role, especially in a genre like a JPRG.

Then I do research. Lots of it. I happen to love history and mythology so I've been looking up information about The Anarchy and War of the Roses for my current project ( it's undergoing a rather large overhaul ) so I can start getting ideas for the general plot and even world-building. Whilst the setting is based off the medieval era, I still incorporate the usual fantasy elements, though like in FFT, chocobos were just alternate mounts ( I've got gigantic lions in mine ) and the skills practiced by the cast were as a result of extensive military training.

Once I've got a rough idea of the world, do I start planting down a few maps ( one of my favourite parts of making an RPG ) to get an idea of my game world. The other aspects of the game ( skills, battle systems, enemy units etc.) generally just falls into place once I've got past certain obstacles. Then the plot and characters start writing themselves.
