SBESTER'S PROFILE

I've been an active member for quite a few years now. I started my RMN career by releasing the Eden Legacy Trilogy of games (each entry took 4 months of nonstop work) within one year, and I've gradually shifted to creating other games as well. I now have 3 flagship series: Eden Legacy, Fragile Hearts, and Mafiosi (being remade for commercial release as Crime Opera). I'm pretty much solely focused on the Crime Opera series of visual novels right now, as my band and job currently take up most of my free time.

Currently working on
-Crime Opera Trilogy (Mafiosi 1, 2, & 3 edited, with all original resources)
-It's a secret...
Crime Opera II: The Floo...
The kids have grown up, and they're becoming quite dangerous.

Lowering your standards and finishing your game

Pretty sure your definition of "chopping off unnecessary parts without lowering the standards" is the same as what everyone else meant by "lowering the standards." Most of what you said is still pretty true though.
i thought lowering standards meant using crappy placeholder graphics in lieu of something you couldn't get done in time rather than completely chopping that away. I look at standards as a function of effort.

I do disagree with this point:
There's nothing worse than trying to figure out how. So, a game is not something to be testing new concepts on. A game should incorporate what you already know. If you have trouble with or want to experience a new idea, make a short but sweet tech demo. Don't feel obligated to release it, however.

In my opinion, if you don't have a new idea, you shouldn't make a new game. If the game does nothing unique, there's no reason for it to exist. My reason for making games as a hobby is because I like to design original creative works. If you just want to re-release what you've already done before, I hope you're getting paid for it.

Then you aren't getting my point. I do agree with you, a game should be new and original. I meant, if you've never made an ABS before, a new (main) game isn't the place to do it. A short tech demo where you practice that is the place. If you want to make an epic, don't test new game mechanics until you know how or got it down fairly well on a previous (even smaller) project. Otherwise you might stop working on the main project because you couldn't figure out how to incorporate the battle system - since it's the first time you did it. And that blows worse than story and graphics (which could have been the best ever).

You're all completely backwards if you think a majority of this community is dead set on originality. Conventional is good.

This kills!
Amazing!

Big Announcement Coming Soon!

Hahaha I probably should have named the blog post something different, considering how many more updates I had to choose from here. I'm just excited about it is all, and soon everyone will understand why.

Retro Quest Review

Good review! I actually put this on the backburner after dying right at the start but I plan to give it my full attention when I have the time. (Damned 2k3 battles with their stalling).

RPGs Through the Generations

Looks like I need to try The World Ends With You, seems to be on most people's list.

RPGs Through the Generations

I only listed my very faves for each system, not every game I ever liked. That would have taken forever.

RPGs Through the Generations

I wanna know how people's tastes in RPGs have changed through the console generations. List your faves like so:

NES
Final Fantasy I
I know the 2nd and 3rd are better, but this was my first rpg that I ever played to the end of. The sequels were basically more of the same old, and didn't quite evolve as much as the Dragon Warrior games did.

SNES
Tales of Phantasia
'nuff said.

Playstation
Xenogears
The story, the characters, the unique visual style, the intuitive battle system, the music... all this and more have made this my favorite game of all time. Special mention have to go to Legend of Dragoon for its amazing battle system and I'll always have a thing for FFVIII as well. Playstation was definitely my favorite generation for rpgs!

Playstation 2
Shadow Hearts/Xenosaga III
Can't choose between these. I loved both series of these games but these two were my favorites. I have a bunch of "Tales" games for PS2 that I have yet to try though, so I guess this could change.

PC
Gothic 1 and 2.
Admittedly, I don't play newer PC Games, so I can't say how these old gems would stack up to games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or Fallout 3 (although I HATE FPA games. Rot in hell Deus Ex).

PS3
_____________
I've had this system since it was released, but have yet to play any RPGs for it. I hope to try White Knight Chronicles as soon as I get the system fixed.

Feel free to add any systems you feel are worth mentioning. These are just my favorite RPGs from my favorite systems (loved my Saturn to death but never played any RPGs on it).

The Encephalon Review

Common events are never 100% reliable in 2k and 2k3. I ran into problems like that for my games as well, forcing me to make up for it with some very tedious event copying and pasting.

Legionwood: Expansion Pack. Go!?

Perhaps some kind of a tie-in to Legionwood II?

RMN, wanna help rescue horses in Atlantic Canada?

Doesn't taste that great anyways, sorta like steak but gamier.

I don't like that you know this.
