SBESTER'S PROFILE
I've been an active member for quite a few years now. I started my RMN career by releasing the Eden Legacy Trilogy of games (each entry took 4 months of nonstop work) within one year, and I've gradually shifted to creating other games as well. I now have 3 flagship series: Eden Legacy, Fragile Hearts, and Mafiosi (being remade for commercial release as Crime Opera). I'm pretty much solely focused on the Crime Opera series of visual novels right now, as my band and job currently take up most of my free time.
Currently working on
-Crime Opera Trilogy (Mafiosi 1, 2, & 3 edited, with all original resources)

JRPG or 3D rpg?
Battle system defines an rpg. It also defines the 'type' of rpg (action rpg, classic jrpg). This is the reason I actually considered FF12 an mmorpg, even though it lacked the massively multiplayer component that makes the name valid.
Most Anticipated Movie of 2010
Reminds me of the Crotchduster Xmas movie I've been waiting for since 2003 :P
Next Christmas, the elves have unionized, and they're sick of those two slave driving white devils.
"Hey Joe, when's the last time you ever got a raise?"
"Fuckin' never!"
"Me too, whaddya say we kill Santa?"
"Allllllllllright!"
This Christmas, "Y'know 14 is the age of consent in South Carolina", Slappy Spotted Bawls as old Saint Nick, "Put yer retainer back in, Mrs Clause is comin'", and Julia Louise Drypuss as Mrs Clause "I sure am glad we don't have to make presents for the Jews",
Santa gets shot, POW! stabbed "Awrr", choked "Kakkk, yer chokin' me", burnt "Yahhhhh", nailed to a cross "you bastards!", and disemboweled.
Santa's elves know your kids haven't been good. Fuck your kids and fuck you too.
This movie is rated G.

Update Notes (9/11/2010)
Front page looks really awesome, dude!
I can't reach my public game pages through the links on my 'manage games' tab anymore, but that's a minor hindrance.

Anyone up for a quickie contest?
lol reminds m of a recent article on here, actually, but yeah. Not much thought was put into my suggestions but I do really like the community trailer idea, admittedly.
Craze's Let's Play! Topic
Really good job, and I like that your first entry was an obscure title that I'd never heard about before. Well selected!
Anyone up for a quickie contest?
I was going to make a topic like this a long time ago and then forgot about it. Seeing as I never take part in these, I was just going to throw out ideas for others to use as they please:
WORST RM PROJECT COMPETITION
-Create the most boring, stupid, uncreative game you can.
-Disqualification grounds: over 2mb in size, anything done in rmxp or rmvx, the game has absolutely nothing to it, no effort has been conveyed at all. (In other words it still must be playable).
-Winner gets a MISAO award lol
-Each game will be played for 5 mins or more. Any game shorter than that will also result in disqualification.
RMN 2011 COMMUNITY PROJECT
-Competition and community game
-Create a 5 minute game trailer introducing your game's plot, setting, characters, graphics, style, etc.
-Winning project will become a community effort, with the winning author acting as a director to the game.
-Only apply if you can properly organize a community project.
REVAMP COMPETITION
-Take an old project of yours, completed or not completed, and update it to make it more accessible to the RMN community. (This works best for old projects that you never previously released).
-Cannot already be a good game (popular, has over two star reviews, awards, etc).
-Projects must be at least a year old.
RETRO COMPETITION
-release something using RM95
GAIDEN PROJECT COMPETITION
-create a side story or related game to one of your games

It's a Matter of Choice
So how do you like your backstory?
Shinan's 'What the hell' 3 day gamemaking contest!
I've never taken part in these competitions, but I absolutely love when they happen. This was a great idea given the recent discussion of "The Room".
Five Strategies for Better Game-Making
Great article, Soli. Even though Xenogears is the best game of all time (by far not flawless, but truly epic on a scale I've never experienced before). As someone mentioned before, they're great rules that are easier said than done, but we'd all do well to keep them in mind when making our games.
There are many facets to creating lovable characters that I think need to be expressed. I'm going to write a series of articles on them soon, beginning with gender characterizations (a problem that virtually every rm game I've played does wrong). And yes, I realize the Eden Legacy games have no real character personalities as of right now, but they aren't meant to, so I hope people don't instantly dismiss my thoughts when I write these.
What I felt you were getting at, in point four, (and I agree with it) is that a lot of rm games focus too much on an having epic story with endless plot twists and escalating universal scaled catastrophes, and fail to keep developing their main characters or their interrelationships. Most rm games do this from the get go (or at least the few I've played), and we're forced to engage more with the plot than the actual game experience. It's all about balancing, and I think your advice is a great starting point in achieving that goal.
