Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

Error?? Game will not start up.

Script 'input EX' Line703 Run time error Load libary. X input 1_3

Am using the RAW file. have tried it 5 times.

That worked thanks
Sounds like your DirectX needs to be updated. The game uses Xinput for better gamepad support (many popular gamepads don't work with RPGMaker by default). You can update DirectX here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

If that doesn't fix the problem, let me know and I'll see what I can do about getting you a patch to remove Xinput. Sorry for the trouble!
So, uh...my airship just disappeared.

I just got the Amulet of Garland, left the tower, went back to town and...gone.

Here's a copy of the savefile http://www.mediafire.com/download/tioh38o3jdmi7e7/Save05.rvdata2
If I may complain: why there's no option to toggle skill description in battle? Maybe a game developer doesn't need that, but an average player does. I can't possibly remember effects of all those skills, especially those physical skills since magics are pretty much straight-forward with the effects due to being classic ones.
Also, I have the ATB speed set at max and it still feels slow, like default "RM2k3 slow" which is terribly slow.

I gotta agree on the skill descriptions. Especially for Blue Magic and Physical skills. There are just so many, and it's really hard to keep them all straight.

I have to agree as well. I have no idea what the skills do.
@Rebel: Looking into that airship issue right now. There's an event that runs after you get the Amulet, and I think that my world map lag fix might have messed up the processing of that event. I'm really sorry for the trouble.

@Noel: Really? Max ATB speed should be pretty quick. Higher numbers are faster speeds, it's kinda backwards from normal FF out of necessity. Could you send me your save file, please? I need to see if something might have gone wrong. I do have to go soon though, so I may not be able to really dig into it until later.

You can toggle the help menu on and off during battle... but for some reason, the bind is not working on keyboard (on gamepad, it should be the select/back button, ala old FF), and I don't know why. I'll add some more binds for it, really sorry for the problem.
For spells/skills etc. you should be able to press spacebar to bring up the help thing like in standard FF games. I'm not sure about the controller command since I don't have it plugged in atm, but probably select? It doesn't work with secondary commands like Runic/Rawr/etc. but you can look in the menu for that outside of battle.

Rydia is too fast for me. ;_;
Huh, I just tried it out and indeed Space will bring up a help menu with skill descriptions. I could have sworn I tried that before, but I guess not. Thanks for that!
@rebel1223 I have fixed the problem and am sending you a PM with a link to your save. Long story short, there's an event on the airship after you speak with the elder, and it moves a sprite in from elsewhere. Because of my world map lag fix, that sprite had been disposed... so no airship. I fixed it all up and it shouldn't be a problem for anyone now. They'll just need a small patch.

Also couldn't help but peek at your group, I like the setup you have going! And wow at that play time, I'm glad you're having fun. =D

Haha, I have to admit I tend to leave the game open while doing other things, so the actual "play" time is lower than the clock!

As for my group, the first three are mainstays (honestly, Fievel just destroys everything with his hit all Blitzes, and I hate the thought of missing out on Blue Magic) with the fourth rotating out. Really liking the added firepower of the Black Magic, though, so I may end up sticking with that.
@rebel1223 Good stuff! Fievel and Doiden seem to be favorites!

To everyone else, a patch has been added to the downloads section to fix the disappearing airship glitch. Download and install it before speaking to the elder after getting the Amulet of Garland for best results, but there is a failsafe that should place your airship next to Koen in the event that you do not. The main downloads will be updated shortly. Sorry for the trouble! ;;
I'm having a trouble with the QTE in the Oasis, like the image says "Press Space" and I literally tap it extremely rapidly and nothing changes at all and the enemy team is getting points. OTL
Edit: Actually I got past it while having the controller in and inputing the button there. Mind you, I had controller already in and could easily use keyboard while playing with no problem. Maybe there's some kind of issue with keyboard/controller thing for the QTE? I don't know. ?_?

Also, if anyone is interested I'm currently filling Final Fantasy Fandom Wiki with some information for this game; currently I have prioritized somewhat completing ability lists.

I played this game a little before you released it on this forum but I didn't like how char development went in this ff fangame. First of all it's full of strange characters with non-matching sprites. They speak things understandable only to people who plays ff online. Well as for me, you should consider changing game heroes to be more "epic" than they are now, because it may scare people who aren't familiar with you.
Noel: This was a typo I encountered while testing as well. Basically it's just the main input button (not sure what this translates to on keyboard, but it's the bottom button (A/Cross depending on your controller) on the controller. I let the devs know about this but I'm not sure if it's something they were capable fixing at the time.

Swish: You did read the developer's introduction about this game, right? This game was originally made in mind only for the characters that are represented in the game. After getting the game to a relatively polished state was only when they decided to release it for public consumption. The sprites were custom made for each character and the portraits were taken directly from FFXIV.

I can't speak for the developers, but I highly doubt they're going to change the core of the game because the characters don't feel "epic" enough. The characters' personalities and qualities are closely based on the people whose avatars they represent. I'd encourage you to just try to enjoy the game for what it is, and if you don't like how the game flows it simply just may not be for you.

I played FFXIV a little when it had a two-week free trial back in around October last year and I'm not one with your opinion of "speaking things understandable only to people who plays ff online" and I played the original version before the aforementioned trial error and I didn't feel any "detached" from the characters; they're based on real people. I haven't had a chance to play with any of those people in an MMP Final Fantasy or anything of that sort but the way the developers went with the character development has a bit of that Final Fantasy feeling; the game reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy VI TBH (in a good way!). As for names, they aren't really bad: "Elysia", "Kaayu", "Fievel", "Orophin", and "Abelia" sound quite "epic" in my opinion; even "Aeth" has its charm. But well, there are different people with different tastes so it's hard to appeal to everyone, yet I think that the game in overall looks very well.

Aside of that, kudos on occasional/casual Final Fantasy IV references: the ones I noticed is referencing Kain under the mind control spell when the group was discussing Kaayu's strange shift in behaviour and then when the group sets to Aquaria via a ship and there's a mention of Leviathan attacking and Orophin saying he's already a Paladin and they don't have a summoner anyway. ;)
It's hard to get more epic than Level 99 in a Final Fantasy game! ;)

There are definitely still some inside jokes, and there are a number of references to FFXIV as well. This was intentional, but the the story should stand up well enough on its own now. I'm not sure what version of the game you played, but a lot of back story has been added to explain where all of these seemingly random characters are coming from.

As for sprites/portraits, I think it's pretty commonplace for those not to entirely match. o: All of the recent Final Fantasy remakes come to mind. But in our case, a lot of the sprites were made before portraits were made, and a lot of the people these characters are based on went with different character design and were changed when FFXIV transitioned from 1.0 to 2.0. (For example, my character--Aeth--is a male miqo'te now rather than a hyur.)

even "Aeth" has its charm.

Aww, thanks! The full name is actually Aethaeryn, but Ry said it was too long and too hard to spell. ;_; Plus everyone calls me Aeth anyway.

(Edit: I keep omitting words and writing confusing things somehow.)
I really love this fan-based Final Fantasy game! But I have a problem! I keep receiving a NameError message when I get to Cassie in the Palomton Mine! What can I do to fix it?
Never mind! You uploaded the files and I am downloading them! Thank you very much!!!
