Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

Oh, haha. Well, you should like the rest of that character plot going on, then. =)

That's weird... does restarting the game solve it? No one has ever reported lag in battles at all, even after extended play sessions. But then again, none of the testers were running win 8.1, so maybe there is a problem there. :/

I just tested, and 3-4 seconds is about the speed that a character's bar fills on the default speed. With the speed set to max, it's more like 2 seconds, which I figured was plenty fast when you have 4 characters and need to allow for things like Haste still being effective. That said though if there's a problem I can pretty easily just add a faster speed so that's not an issue. Let me know if that'd help!

EDIT: @WCouillard: Usually I'd think so too, but I spent a ton of time correcting any memory leaks/cache problems and cleaning up/removing offending scripts (Tsukihime's Scene Interpreter was causing a massive leak, for example). Testers have played the current version for hours and hours and the memory usages stays stable and no one has reported any battle slowdown (but again, all the testers have been on Win 7)... the only issue was the world map, which has been fixed. Of course, if you know of any problem scripts I might be using I'll definitely look into them. I have modified the ATB to run at a constant speed like a FF ATB, but what I did couldn't cause a problem as I just changed a method to return a constant rather than a variable.
You know, for completionists, you should make a walkthrough of the game where people can find hidden items and bosses after playing the game to complete it 100%.
I am planning to write up a sidequest/hidden item guide so that people won't miss anything. I was planning to have a basic one up this morning, but I've been busy trying to track down a few nagging bugs people are experiencing. It should be up within the next couple of days, and I'll try to keep it as story spoiler-free as possible. Good idea though, the game does have a lot of sidequests and stuff hidden that a lot of players might miss.
You can take your time on it. Don't feel rushed. That's how mistakes are made. It's going to take a while for people to play the whole game anyways.

And what is Runic for?

I didn't see this get answered, but essentially it works like Celes's ability in FF6 where it will absorb all magic (even your own characters, so be smart about using it if you need to heal or are using offensive magic) as MP for the turn that it's active. I remember there being a specific fight that introduces you to the command.

Just for general RPG tips, talk to everyone and mash your "accept" button on everything. There are items in bookshelves, pots, etc. You might have ran into some books that increase your characters' abilities by 1 point. I believe there's one of these for nearly everyone, but some of them are inaccessible at one point in the story so make sure to revisit those towns.

It was mentioned in another post as well, but there are some side cutscenes involving various characters if you rest in various beds across the world. Once you have all the characters I'd recommend flying around and going back to all the areas with beds because some cutscenes only open up after you have specific characters, and you may have not necessarily had them when you first visited that area.

Whoever is in charge of your town at the time (Azran/Eden) will tell you where you can find more people for your town.

Later in the game, the fortuneteller becomes available in Emerald (the desert town) and will tell you which sidequests you can do for your characters. You'll be doing a lot of flying around trying to find them.

(For example, my character--Aeth--is a male miqo'te now rather than a hyur.)
Male Miqo'te now? Coool! I really love their look! Seekers of the Sun or the Moon if I may ask?

I also must admit that whenever a message popup with your text I imagine your voice to be Thancred's (who I really like because his voice is great). Your faces look awfully a lot alike. OTL

Seekers of the Moon! Mainly because I play mages/healers the most.

I really do sound a little like Thancred too, but I'm probably not nearly as good with the ladies... (A certain scene on a pier comes to mind. :X)
How do I bring up the world map??
Press tab (or start on gamepad) while outside on the world map.

@Devhyn: I counter with

Am I the only one who noticed that this game's URL has lucky 7's? What are the odds of that?

I told the same thing the other way to RydiaMist while PMing.

Also, I don't understand why Chainspell requires MP to activate: isn't it enough that each of the two spell casts takes the MP of the selected spell? It's kinda looks like punishment for using this command ability if it drains your MP way faster than it should.
And no Limit Breaks? I'm kinda sad.

I used Dag a lot and personally I didn't feel the MP cost of Chainspell was an issue. I'm not sure if you played FFXI or Red Mage in that game, but Refresh was a major spell in their repertoire. I mean if you're going to spam Chainspell then yeah it might drain you pretty quickly, but usually the only time I used it was to get up an initial Refresh/Haste on Dag and from there I used his spells as needed.

As far as Limit Breaks go, they were probably trying to stay true to the older battle systems like FF4/FF6. Some of the abilities later on feel as if they have the power of a Limit Break on their own (especially when you get break damage limit items) so the absence of Limit Breaks really didn't bother me.
I think we ended up lowering the % of MP dag consumed for his Chainspell before release. Chainspell is kinda taxing when you first get him since you have no MP recovery, but it is pretty good once he can use refresh on himself. It probably would be really over powered if it didn't cost anything since his ATB to the next round is almost nothing.

That being said I didn't use Dag much except for the colosseum generally, I went pretty white mage heavy with 3 melee's most of the time when I was playing normally. My party set up was generally Ashiee, Fievel, Cass + misc DPS... Probably either Karina or Level, sometimes Elysia in that 4th slot to super buff Ashiee and Fievel <_<;
Ooh, party talk is my favorite talk!

I generally run with Fievel and Doiden as my mainstays, and I'm getting good mileage out of Aeth as a semi-permanent third. Fourth slot is a bit of a rotating door, but Abelia and Divinus are the most common. Getting some good mileage from party-wide reflect, with White Wind for healing, as it bypasses Reflect.

Karina is my go-to arena gal. With her ultimate weapon, I haven't encountered anything that can't be taken out with a single Heaven's Gate.
How much damage did you end up getting your Heaven's Gate to? I know if you build your characters up correctly you can pull off crazy numbers, I'm just currious~
I actually just picked up a Glass Mask and she did four hits at 9,999 each (thanks to Illumina's Crits). Not sure what it would be if it broke the limit.
@Noel: Chainspell essentially gives Dag an extra turn with a no cast-time Dualcast immediately. If it didn't burn some MP to activate, he'd be way overpowered compared to the other mages until you get the Soul of Thamasa waaaay later on. As is, while he generally learns spells later than the dedicated mages and has lower relative Intellect and Spirit, his chainspell combined with his ability to use better armor and weapons makes him really solid, I feel. Once you get his more unique spells like Quick and Bubble, he becomes really fearsome.

As for Limits, I had considered it, but ultimately decided that with the ability to swap in party members it might be pretty abusive, as you could just build everyone's limit gauge and then just completely waste a boss immediately with limit break spam from 8 people.

One thing I was considering that I kind of wish I'd just taken the extra time to do was Band-type skills between characters. Ultimately what stopped that was the ridiculous amount of work doing the animations would have been, and the fact that it would have kind of forced certain character combos, along with practically eliminating using the characters' individual skills. That said, I might consider it in the future, if nothing else I do plan to have FF Dimensions style combined attacks in the next game we do if we do it, and I might just toss a few into this game as a testbed.

As for party talk, I'm usually kind of hesitant to say who I use, as people may be like: "Hey, if the dev uses those characters, they must be the best!". I will say I worked pretty hard to ensure that the characters are fairly balanced. At some points in the game certain characters may shine more than others, but they even out pretty nicely towards the end. It just depends what kind of setup you want to go for. Ash's brute force setup works well, but a more tactical setup like Rebel is using works great too. Orophin used an interesting group, and was able to effectively play defensively to the point that only a couple of bonus dungeon bosses were able to pose any sort of threat to him.

I tried to really set stuff up so that people could create all sorts of interesting setups and make almost any combination of characters work. It's pretty awesome reading about all the setups people are using, even ones I hadn't even considered myself!

I will say I'm fond of a couple of setups. Karina(with ultimate weapon), Marz or Ashiee or Azran(with Conqueror's Mark), Aeth (with Offering) or Abelia (with Soul of Thamasa), and Dag (for healing/refresh) is one of my favorite setups. I also like the setup Rebel uses, as Divinus can also use Mix to make all sorts of cool buffing/healing items and has access to AoE haste and Reflect. I'll also say Elysia is definitely worth a look, as while her own attacks are only moderately strong, her buffs can be absolutely crazy. Also, if you just like seeing huge damage, Abelia with a Soul of Thamasa dualcasting Ultima is pretty hard to beat. And while a lot of people discount her as just a WHM, Cassie is really good to have, especially if you are lower level or playing on hard, as her ability to essentially fully heal the party with a single cast, along with spells like Blink, Arise, and Reraise makes her pretty much the best at keeping the group alive. Also, no one's mentioned Miko! His damage shields on Adlo spells are amazing, and let people survive huge hits they normally wouldn't be able to. Azran always had him in his party.

This doesn't really count since my save file is kinda broken, (as in, my stat gains are ridiculous since I was playing it before RydiaMist fixed linear gains to stats from the Magicite) but I've hit over 50k with single attack skills with Karina.

I assume since her attack was essentially double what it should be, at the top levels she should be able to hit over 20k damage with her specials. I always had a strength boosting Magicite on her.

The primary party I used was Orophin, Karina, Marz and Dag. (was partial to this setup since we had a static party in FFXI, haha) I'd also toss in Doiden to learn blue magic and 99 to steal goodies from bosses. The combination of Marz's draw out skills and Dag's buffs made my team able to survive harder things without a "true" healer like Cassie. I focused MP growth on Dag, even though it might be somewhat wasted since it's intended to use Convert if you get low on MP, but that could probably get scary on bonus dungeon bosses. I also had him with a Soul of Thamasa so he could get off some double Curagas when needed, otherwise, double rounds of casts for Refresh/Haste and nuking while no healing was needed was nice.

Orophin of course is built like a wall (again, mine is probably super overpowered due to the stat glitch, but should still be able to hit 255 defense on his own regardless) and with Provoke can take a beating from boss's counter attacks and focused single target damage.

Where do I find the thieves writ?

How far along in the game are you? You actually can't get it until near the end of the game.
