AVEE'S PROFILE

I started to design games at age 5, drawing maps and sprites with felt pens and paper. Then I began writing stories and game scenarios. I've been working with Rpg Maker 2000 and 2003 mostly, as soon as they came out.
I favor RPGs, Action RPGs and Fighting games. My favorite styles are Fantasy, Horror and anything dark or gothic. I also appreciate cute and funny content.
I make a lot of pixel art and some digital art (concept, promo, fanart, etc.)
I also compose 8-bit music.
Don't be shy and send me a message if you want to commission my work ;)

Skippable combat?
Just a simple demo question.
There is no reason for a demo to end on a cliffhanger, particularly the type of demo being referred to here.
There is if the developer wants to maximize chances of players looking forward to the next release. That's up to Camupins to decide in this case.
Skippable combat?
All players who use the feature will have their own reasons, as I said earlier:
All three scenarios will undeniably happen for a game that has the feature. Arguments like "but they don't have to use it" or "I just want to play/watch a specific part of the game" or "it mocks the point of a game" don't move this discussion forward because they each account for only one of the three scenarios.
In my opinion, a more useful discussion should consider and weight all three scenarios together, and foresee the effects of the feature from both a player and a developer's points of view.
(Not that I did earlier but hey :P)

A) Some players won't skip battles. They prefer to play the game in its entirety.
B) Some players will use the fight skip feature to play specific parts of the game. That's fine with me. But there are already numerous ways to satisfy these players.
C) Some players will be lazy and skip battles instead of trying to win them. As a game developer, I don't want that.

I personally think content matters more than length. Essenceblade's suggestions are great, but you should also focus on making the demo interesting enough to have players look forward to the next release:
Make sure the demo introduces and lets players experience a good amount of features and possibilities, in the battle system, menu options and walkabout mode.
Also have your demo end on a cliffhanger, with unanswered questions or with promises of new things to explore and experience in the next release.

That's the point of the article, though... no one is saying anyone HAS to skip gameplay elements, so why get defensive about it? Some people clearly would like to, it's not like it would ruin the game if the option is there.
Say I release an RPG that has skippable battles.
Three scenarios are bound to happen:
A) Some players won't skip battles. They prefer to play the game in its entirety.
B) Some players will use the fight skip feature to play specific parts of the game. That's fine with me. But there are already numerous ways to satisfy these players.
C) Some players will be lazy and skip battles instead of trying to win them. As a game developer, I don't want that.
I don't think anyone is being defensive here. We are just expressing our views about what we believe a game is about.

Skippable combat?
You can already skip some battles by escaping if you entered them.
You could also avoid entering battles if the enemy sprites are on the maps.
Only a few battles are usually mandatory in games, most being boss fights.
If a player can't win a fight because it's too hard, there are lots of ways you could make it easier: level up, get better equipment, devise a better strategy, lower the difficulty setting, etc.
Adding a "Press key to skip this battle" option would just be another way to skip fights, possibly mandatory ones too.
I understand why players would want to skip mandatory stuff. I myself do it sometimes. When I want to see a certain cutscene I load a saved game close to it or I browse youtube.
But from a developer's point of view, I don't understand why you'd want to allow skipping of mandatory, interactive content.
What a great counter-argument.

Which it is not.

I want to fight the 7 boss again.
Include a Boss Rush mode.

(It's not an all or nothing thing here... This isn't a "Should there be a Skip to the end button?" discussion)
I know that. I just think that the option of skipping interactive parts doesn't make sense.
A novel is not interactive, unless it's a Game Book, but then skipping fights reduces the fun and the genuine experience you get out of it.
