BACKWARDS_COWBOY'S PROFILE
Gaming and game design are my hobbies. I've spent the most time with VX Ace and 2k3 (prior to Steam release), but the only thing I've ever finished anything with is 2k.
Psychology was my first degree, but being responsible for depressed kids was too stressful. So I got a Masters in Healthcare Management and now I'm responsible for depressed adults!

The Word Filter on Neopets is Crazy
You think Neopets is bad? Webkinz won't even let you use that word.
I remember about fifteen years ago or so I was at my uncle's house for a Christmas party and we were messing around with my little cousins' Webkinz accounts. Tried to make the meanest "video" we could in one of the mini-games on the site (more like a PowerPoint presentation) and had to use "not good" any time we wanted to say "bad".
There's being kid-friendly, then there's overkill. Not that you could bring that to their attention, since it has "kill" in it.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin
I don't understand the need to remake every turn-based game as a 3D action-adventure. I get that improvements to technology have enable developers to take a property from 30-40 years ago and present it the way the creator had originally envisioned (this was what Final Fantasy IX was compared to Final Fantasy I back in the early 2000's) but completely changing the concept of the game and trying to present it as a new version of a classic is just getting so overdone these days.
Could have made a stand-alone spin-off rather than remaking Final Fantasy I. Did Square Enix really need another Final Fantasy game to begin with? XVI is in development, VII Remake is in ongoing development an release, what does yet another title add that people weren't already getting from the franchise?

"RPG In a Box"
RPG Maker games get a lot of criticism for all looking the same, but any 3D cube-based game design software is so much worse. Minecraft got big over a decade ago and everybody was like "whelp, we have to make everything out of cubes now".
3D assets are significantly more difficult to create than 2D ones, barring cubes, so a lot of them inevitably end up looking like a Minecraft texture mod. I know Minecraft was far from the first game to do it, but by far it was the most influential on the direction of game design.

I've been away from the scene for a while. Which maker will best help me make a game like this?
The hardest part is going to be the multi-platform aspect you are looking for. That is best done using MV or MZ, which also fulfills items 2 and 3, but makes it hard to achieve item 1 due to the higher resolution others have mentioned.
I prefer VX Ace out of all the modern RPG Makers, it has a modern feel without losing the charm of the older makers.

[Poll] THE MOST IMPORTANT POLL
I choose Hamsternaut because it clearly calls to mind a hamster going to space.
Hamstronaut sounds like you just added ham to astronaut, which brings to mind an image of an actual ham going to space, or maybe a pig.

Hub vs Adventure

plodding over the same old terrain just to use the key item/skill to open up slightly new terrain (while dealing with constant anklebiters you've leveled past already) is more annoying than fun.
Scaling enemy encounters can help with that. Rogue Galaxy, a mid PS2-era action JRPG, would cause you to start encountering high-level enemies in early-game locations after a certain plot point. You'll still encounter the low-level monsters, but only a small amount of the time, so you'll mostly find yourself fighting monsters on par with your own party. I found it out the hard way when I went back to grind enemy-specific kill counters for side-quest reasons, and ended up encountering enemies capable of 3HKO'ing some of my characters in the starting town. Revisiting old locations becomes necessary for some of the side quests later on, as well as the bonus achievements.
What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Trails of Cold Steel IV is an amazing game and I am in the process of finishing it. It’s amazing to see that there are people who are able to create something this meaningful as this game is amazing to play. I know that it’s not the best in terms of gameplay but when it comes to the narrative, there is nothing that can top it for me as I was invested ever since the Sky games on the PSP and the Crossbell games on the same platform and the Steel games just make it so much better for me.
I'm having a hard time finding the motivation to finish that one. I played through the first three no problem, but the fourth feels like a chore at times. The amount of talking I feel is excessive early on compared to the previous entries, which had more of their exposition in the mid- and late-game segments.
author=Hexatonaauthor=Yellow MagicWhew, been there - I've been in that problem for years. Really has cramped down on my game completion rate.
I keep falling asleep while playing Persona 5 Royal...kindof annoying when the only real gaming time I have these days is around midnight, and often there are 30-40 minutes of playtime between save points.
That game needs a mid-dialogue quick save function. If you're going to dedicate so much of your game to being a visual novel, give us a way to stop in the middle of it rather than making antiquated save points.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (1990)(Switch, Official English Translation)
Whelp, I finished another one. I honestly can't recommend it for anything other than its historical value, or nostalgia for those who were able to play the Japan-only original release. The item management is not great even for 1990, and the lack of a preview before attacking an enemy means you are largely going in blind unless you do the damage formula before each action, which is exhausting. The game is also painfully slow, and using the included speed-up function also accelerates the music, making it painful to listen to.
It feels like a cheap cash grab for Nintendo, since this is the only way to get the game in English, and was a limited time purchase. They pulled it at the end of March with Super Mario 3D All Stars. Looking up guides for the game is also a challenge, since most search results are for the superior Nintendo DS remake, which is still available on the Wii U eShop.
