Gaming and game design are my hobbies. I've spent the most time with VX Ace and 2k3 (prior to Steam release), but the only thing I've ever finished anything with is 2k.

Psychology was my first degree, but being responsible for depressed kids was too stressful. So I got a Masters in Healthcare Management and now I'm responsible for depressed adults!

2021 Gaming Diary

Update
I lost interest in several of the games on my list and started playing other games where I had untouched save files from 1-3 years ago and am now finishing, primarily God Wars: Future Past. I did finish two games though! Sorry for the lack of screenshots, I'm like four or five years too old to understand how to share content from my consoles to my computer without having to read a guide online.

Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu
It was nice to revisit the Kanto region in 3D, with the physical/special split from Gen IV present, as well as the Fairy type from Gen VI. The lack of abilities changed how several Pokemon, such as Gengar, are used. Now being weak to the common Earthquake move, Gengar is less of a threat than in past titles. Mr. Mime, Clefable, and Wigglytuff all being Fairy types changes up their resistances and makes them into a threat against the few Dragon- and Dark-types in the game. On the subject of Dark-types, thanks to the inclusion of Alolan forms, Dark-type Pokemon are present in Kanto for the first time. Movesets have been streamlines, with many moves removed from the game. It would have been nice to have the Galarian forms included in an update to further diversify the pool of available Pokemon. Evolutions added in later generations are absent, which is unfortunate as this limits the usefulness of Golbat, Chansey, Scyther, Seadra, and others. The generic trainers are unfortunately weaker than the original games, though the late-game gym leaders can pose a threat if your type match-up is bad or you are under-leveled.

Nicktoons Kart Racers 2 Grand Prix
I bought and finished this game over the course of a weekend, it was on sale. It's probably the first non-Spongebob Nickelodeon game in a long time that didn't get trashed by critics and fans. For those not aware, the first Nicktoons Kart Racers was a disappointment and a critical failure as many thought it was going to be a revival of the older Nickelodeon racing games. Instead, it was 40% Ninja Turtles, 40% Spongebob, and 20% Miscellaneous Shows. The sequel solves 70-80% of the issues, and is enjoyable as a half-decent alternative to Mario Kart. There are some weird design choices, like adding live-action stars as Nicktoons, and some of the newer shows I only knew because I used to work with children. The inclusion of several 90's shows like Rugrats, CatDog, Hey Arnold!, Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life were good for nostalgia. Some shows were sorely missed, like Aaah! Real Monsters. It was evident that much of this was due to the recent movie revivals of Rocko's Modern Life, Hey Arnold! and Invader Zim, and the upcoming revival of Rugrats. Still too many damn Ninja Turtles.

Tell me what anime to watch and why

I have a few suggestions, with the explanation for each being how my girlfriend felt about them, since her crazy mother is a photographer and a film snob:

The anime adaptation of the Persona series is pretty good; the 3rd, 4th, and 5th games all got at least one series, with 4 getting two of them. My girlfriend played Persona 5 for about 15 minutes but was completely engrossed in the anime and has been hunting for apparel based on what the characters wear.

Aggretsuko is like Hello Kitty for adults, my girlfriend loves it.

Revisions on Netflix is interesting since it started as an anime and was adapted to a graphic novel, the opposite of how those things usually go. The characters come across as whiny at first but develop. My girlfriend almost gave up around episode 3 or 4 but it grew on her.

Wrong aspects in the game industry, and possible solutions

It's either this or games will have to take longer to make or cost more. Or the industry gets burned to the ground idk.

I think we have one or two more console generations to go and that will happen. Once people realize that the jump from 4k to 8k will only be slightly perceptible to the human eye, or when game graphics consistently look realistic and processors reach an efficiency level where millions of NPCs can be rendered simultaneously. Then the gaming market will stagnate and/or crash. The past three console generations have only seen modest jumps, hence why so many games remain multi-generation releases for years after a new console comes out. PS3 and PS4 shared something like 75% of releases for a while after launch, and lots of early titles were remasters of PS3 games from a couple years prior. PS4 and PS5 so far share what, 95% of titles? Nintendo is the only company that locks people out of new games if they don't upgrade to the next console.

Hell, just look up youtube video comparisons of Marvel's Spider-man for PS4 Pro VS PS5. People are pissed at some of the graphical "updates" because they feel they look worse even though from a technical standpoint they are "better" (really just needing more memory and power to render). The continued success of free or low-cost games like Fall Guys and Among Us really show how little people care about the technical aspects of games these days; graphical enhancements between generations are starting to plateau, and people can't afford $60 - $80 per game anymore.

Wrong aspects in the game industry, and possible solutions

While we're on the topic of bad things game companies do, I just want to throw in the practice of releasing unfinished, barely playable games that started to grow in prevalence once the ability to patch console games via internet updates became feasible.

Ubisoft and EA are two of the more notorious ones, though Activision has hopped on the bandwagon the past 5 years or so, notably with Call of Duty: WWII which didn't work for nearly two weeks after launch.

The Wii and 3DS were probably the last consoles to not have this issue, as Nintendo really didn't want games to have online functionality, including patches or updates. If your Wii or DS game had to update, it was a shocking moment and only occurred in the most game breaking of cases, and mostly just with first-party Nintendo games. Nintendo has since fallen from grace, with many of their games having Day One patches, or in the case of Animal Crossing, removing half of the content of previous titles and re-adding it as free DLC at a later date under the false pretense of "so everybody experiences it at the same time" rather than admitting they ran out of time to finish the game before the already-delayed release date.

Before the "always-online" era of gaming, if you bought Ar Tonelico II for the PS2, you were stuck glitching past the late-game since, if a certain battle was allowed to reach the enemy phase, the game would take up too much memory and the PS2 would freeze up. If your copy of GTA San Andreas had Hot Coffee, or your TESIV: Oblivion had nipples, that shit got recalled. These were big deals. Now, if your game is literally broken even 90 days after launch (lookin' at you, Cyberpunk and Fallout 76), it's all good and you can still ask $60.00 for your colossal waste of production costs.

Not to mention how Open Betas (and more recently, "playable Alpha") have turned players into free game testers, a job that used to pay people an average of $73,000/year, but that people now pre-order just to get access to.

RPG Maker games obscurity iceberg

I feel like Hero's Realm should be one level higher; I see that one get mentioned a lot.

I'm solidly at Corpse Party '96 depths. I don't have the lung capacity of you Three Ghostly Roses people.

Goaling it 2021

1. Move Up a Level in Six Sigma Certification
It's a quality improvement certification used in military, manufacturing, and healthcare, though applicable to all business. I've been on the second level of four for a few years now and just got lazy and stopped trying to study and test for the next stage.

2. Ask for a Raise or Find a Better Job
I'm on the management team of a medical clinic and I could be making more almost anywhere else doing less.

3. Read More
I have a huge backlog of books to read that I buy because they sound interesting, but it can take me months or years to even start them, then I often take months to finish them if I do at all. Flashing lights are too much more interesting for me.

4. Play More Games
In addition to my book backlog, I have a huge backlog of games. Same reason, too. Seem interesting, buy them, take months or years to start, take forever to finish. The distraction here is playing games I've played a million times because the familiarity makes the games easier, and gives my reptile brain a stronger sense of accomplishment when I progress more quickly. I've beaten Final Fantasy X Remastered on both PS3 and PSVita and beat it on PS2 back in the day, but haven't finished Final Fantasy XII Remastered once (and never finished it on PS2). I also get distracted by things like Call of Duty because the rank progression gets to me on a deep psychological level, because let's face it, modern Call of Duty is an MMO ARPG.
