Gaming and game design are my hobbies. I've spent the most time with VX Ace and 2k3 (prior to Steam release), but the only thing I've ever finished anything with is 2k.

Psychology was my first degree, but being responsible for depressed kids was too stressful. So I got a Masters in Healthcare Management and now I'm responsible for depressed adults!

Nintendo Switch; Yes, that's the name

I think my biggest issue isn't the system itself, but the way Nintendo has been lying about tech specs for nearly a decade. Granted, they never officially promised anything, but consider the past couple systems they've given us and what various Nintendo reps said they would do:

Nintendo 3DS: Gameboy Advance games will be on the eShop. Technically they were if you bought it at the original price point, but I've heard different stories of how well/poorly they run. Nintendo later said the hardware couldn't support emulating the GBA games, and it took too much time and effort just to get the versions for the early adopters to work. The games would later be ported to the Wii U to spite all of the early adopters of the 3DS even further.

Nintendo Wii U: Gamecube games will be on the eShop. Nintendo later states that they tried, but the hardware couldn't support the emulated Gamecube OS while also running the Wii U. Supports the Wii OS and games just fine, though. I remember a lot of people holding out on buying a Wii U until GC games hit the eShop, but that never happened.

They've been pretty conservative on what the Switch will offer as far as ports and the eShop goes, probably because they learned their lesson after two systems not working out like they thought.

Yeah, I’m probably going to use it as a handheld more than anything else, since I have to share the T.V. with two other people at home. 2.5 hours isn’t probably that bad for something like this, especially since I only play games nowadays for 2 hours at a time, but I dunno, I kind of think that they could have done better with this in the back of my mind... Oh well, you’re probably right.

If you're at home I think you can just plug the USB/AC adapter directly into the tablet portion even when it's not in the dock. I can't remember if it's sold separately or not, though.

RMN NPCs

Does VXAce have a horse sprite? I'll uh... I'll be that.

Old school RMers: what are some communities that you used to belong to that have ceased to exist?

Is Charas-Project still around? I was on there. Also RPG Crisis during I believe two different iterations of that place. Can't for the life of me remember what any of my old usernames were. I think there was also one called RPG Chaos, which was like a very very small RPG Crisis. There was one other that I can't remember the name of, though.

[Poll] Let's Talk About Phantasy Star

I've played all of them through the Sega Genesis Collection, and I played Portable and Portable 2, which were essentially handheld MMORPGS. The first was local only, but the second had online servers where you could join a party.

According to Sega Genesis Collection, Phantasy Star IV was so complex for the time that the game included a massive strategy guide book that listed where to go and what to do for all the quests and side-quests.

When do you have too many side quests?

If the side-quests are optional, I don't see the problem with having an indefinite amount.

If you start pulling things like Xenoblade Chronicles X did where you either have to complete "side-quest x" to progress in the main story line, then that's not a side-quest. Or what they did with character-oriented side-quests where you were locked into them once you started, and there was a relatively rare glitch where you could be permanently stuck in them and unable to progress in the game as an event never activates to finish or progress in the side-quest.

I don't see a problem with the Skyrim or Fallout model of having thousands of quests, since they largely don't interfere with the game unless they add an item to your weight-based inventory that can't be removed until you finish the six-hour long side-quest.

Then there's Dragon's Dogma where most quests in the game can only be accepted and completed during small time frames within the main story line, leading many players to miss important items, or have characters disappear from the game forever due to not being rescued when the player may not have even known the quest to save them was available.

I can't wait to pay every month for the worst online service I've ever used.

I'd definitely agree with you there. Considering how limited all previous iterations of eShop/Wii Shop Channel have been, how MiiVerse turned into eHarmony for anonymous children, and how several games on the DS, 3DS, and Wii/U lagged when playing online (much less on the Wii U than the others, but still), I'm not particularly pumped for that aspect of it.

Maybe charging for it will actually lead to better connectivity, since the servers will be less of a drain on the corporate wallet and possibly even zero their own costs out.

But wait! If you buy now, you get six months free until they roll out the payment plans in the fall!

Mario Kart 8 finally has BATTLE ARENAS.

I only hope that they add them to the Wii U version as either a free update or cheap DLC. I mean, I'm not too keen on paying another $59.99 for the same game with an altered battle mode after buying a new console, unless we're also looking at an additional 16 or 32 courses with it. If they really want to spoil us, they'll include all the old tracks, since a solid 50%-60% of them have been remade in full 3D within the past ten years.

Nintendo Switch; Yes, that's the name

With the Switch having been officially shown off during a live-stream yesterday (today in some regions), I felt it would be appropriate to revive this thread as opposed to creating a second Switch thread.

First Impressions:

  • I was very impressed with the JoyCon controller, with motion controller, two controllers in one, amiibo scanning, and hand gesture recognition, as well as the dynamic rumble feature.
  • I was slightly, but not entirely, surprised by the announcement of paid internet services. Free online play was one of Nintendo's final advantages over the more powerful consoles from Sony and Microsoft.
  • The first few games shown off were disappointing. "1, 2 Switch!" turns your Switch into an expensive party game. Actual quote: "It doesn't even use the screen." "ARMS" looks like a Punch-Out!! clone, and doesn't seem like it will have much to offer content-wise for the price. After that it picked up a little, with more interesting titles being shown off.
  • The launch titles are "1, 2 Switch!", Zelda (also on Wii U), and a few third-party titles that are also available on Steam for a much lower price. All other titles announced will be released over the next two years. This makes it hard to justify buying a Switch right now, as opposed to waiting for a bigger catalog and a possible price drop.
  • Though not related to the system, the live-stream was derailed by a few guests whose wacky antics fell flat with the crowd of investors, and threw off the live translators, leading to a lot of awkward silence. Investors were not impressed, and Nintendo stock dropped, though is still higher than it was at this time a year or two ago.
  • No region locking. We did it, mom.

While the controllers are impressive, the battery life of the system is 2.5 - 6 hours, making it the shortest battery life of a handheld console since I think the early 2000's or late 1990's when Sega was still in the console market. I can't say I'm too motivated to buy one right now. I'm thinking I'll do what I did with the Wii U: wait for the price to drop and a better selection of games to arrive (Mario Kart 8 pushed me to buy back then), or some incentives (Wii U was Digital Deluxe package with cash back on digital purchases, plus a free game when registering MK8). At this point in time, the PS4 and XB1 frequently go on sale for $249.99 or less in bundles, so $299.99 for a new console operating nearly a generation behind with no game catalog seems a little much right now. Hell, I could upgrade my phone to one of those gaming-capable tablet-sized abominations right now for less than that.

Anybody else watch it or read about it after? Thoughts?
