Gaming and game design are my hobbies. I've spent the most time with VX Ace and 2k3 (prior to Steam release), but the only thing I've ever finished anything with is 2k.

Psychology was my first degree, but being responsible for depressed kids was too stressful. So I got a Masters in Healthcare Management and now I'm responsible for depressed adults!

A case for RPG Maker

I completely agree with the article. RPG Maker gets a bad name largely because the barrier to entry is so low compared to more advanced engines, and more garbage games get finished and released because the engine is so easy to use and the necessary resources are provided from the start, so even people who have no idea how to make a game can stumble through the process and end up with something, unlike the more advanced engines where if you don't know how to do something, it's not happening.

Old RPG Maker stuff. No, I really mean it.

Every now and then the idea of a 3-D RPG Maker-like program pops up, but nothing ever comes of it. I wonder if we'll ever see one...

My experience with RPG Maker II and RPG Maker 3 on the PS2 informs me that this is a bad idea. Sure, the technology has improved over the last ten years, but once you add that extra dimension of depth, you start to push the limits of the hobbyist and low-level indie developer realm. 2D is nice because it's easy (or at least SHOULD be) to render on most modern platforms, like mobile and the god-awful tablet style PC market. 3D starts to complicate things and slow things down. You go 3D, and every other help topic becomes "HELP WHY IS MY GAME LAGGING".

But more importantly, what does "FISH 0 DAYS" mean in that screenshot? Or is the enemy just called "FISH O' DAYS"?

[Poll] Star Kart - If this ever became an actual thing, would you buy it?

Star Wars would've made a good tie-in DLC for Mario Kart, but an entire game based around it? I don't how that would go.

It's too bad Nintendo has a contract with Universal and Star Wars is owned by Disney, otherwise this might've had a chance as a real thing.

I saw something new: Amazon Lumberyard

I like how they phrase it:

"Amazon Lumberyard is a free AAA game engine"

You can have the most powerful engine in the world, but if the developers use it for crap, then crap is what's coming out of it. Does the engine look amazing and powerful? Absolutely. But the people who are going to be able to use it and use it well are the people who already have successful games on the market. This isn't really an "indie" thing as much as it is a "small game developer with modest capital" thing.

Not to mention the "free" part:

"With Amazon Lumberyard, developers only pay standard AWS fees for the AWS services they choose to use. With Amazon GameLift, you simply pay for the standard AWS fees for Amazon EC2, Amazon EBS, and data transfer you actually use, plus a small fee per Daily Active User."

If your game uses any online multiplayer or cloud-based features, you're going to be paying a lot of miscellaneous fees. Yeah, making a single-player game is still free, but if you want any online functionality, you'd better have some income coming in.

This could be a great and powerful service, but all I see coming out of it are people getting frustrated about it being too hard to use, or about being charged "hidden" fees that are pretty clearly outlined all over the place. This looks like it has potential for professional game devs. But not amateur indie developers or hobbyists like most of us. On the bright side, this means that it won't pump Steam full of more cash-grabs like when RPG Maker added Steam integration. $14.99 for an indie RPG Maker game with RTP resources, anyone?

Aubade - Screen Size Preference

I'd prefer the smaller screen without the zoom, but like everybody else said, giving the option to the player would be the best method.

Sharing my Music with All

I really like your Urban and Sci-fi/Techno themes. It's easy to find sci-fi themes considering the prevalence of appropriate DLC in the RPG Maker community, but urban or modern themes are pretty hard to come by.

Does Anyone Know Stuff about Guns (or Baseball Bats)?

Here's a website with a chart about wood strength if you want to use realistic baseball bats. You could have bats made of stronger wood and then metal instead of crazy fantasy bats.

New Developer Mapping Help Thread

Taking a screenshot in the editor tends to not go over well for submissions. They should be taken while the game is running. The blue checkerboard pattern being present isn't helping your submission, and for whatever reason (maybe it's just me?) it looks kind of blurry.

[General Design] What is the worst implemented/thought out system you've encountered?

Has anybody mentioned Final Fantasy XII's License Board yet? The developers themselves disliked that one. Four or five out of the six available characters inevitably end up as clones or slight variations of each other, with one or two characters being specialized mages or tanks for most players. You had to make a conscious effort to create a party of different classes.

Supposedly the developers thought it would end up allowing players to choose who gets to be which class, but it just ended up with all characters having everything. The License Board was pretty much 80% of the reason for the Zodiac re-release.

It was a nice system, where playing the game and killing enemies allowed you to essentially pick your next "level up" perk, provided you've unlocked an adjacent square. It just wasn't implemented well at all.

[Poll] Is this mechanic annoying/a problem?

A red flash probably wouldn't be too much of an epilepsy issue. If you were rapidly alternating bright colors, you would need to worry about it, but if you're just using a dull red flash it probably won't be a trigger for the average epileptic. Severe epilepsy? Maybe. But anybody with epilepsy that bad probably doesn't use too many electronic devices.

"For about 3 percent of people with epilepsy, exposure to flashing lights at certain intensities or to certain visual patterns can trigger seizures. This condition is known as photosensitive epilepsy."

"The frequency or speed of flashing light that is most likely to cause seizures varies from person to person. Generally, flashing lights most likely to trigger seizures are between the frequency of 5 to 30 flashes per second (Hertz)."

Source: Epilepsy Foundation

I believe RPG Maker only flashes once or twice per second. I know you're trying out the glow effect instead, but this is helpful for future reference or for anybody else using the flashing effects.
