It's a completely new dungeon! I've changed the intro so that it includes a brief tutorial area, instead of the elven spirits pontificating tediously about things.
For what it's worth, this is one of two new dungeons (there's an added final dungeon as well) as well as three new side dungeons.

If you can find a way to actually make that look right, I'd be up for doing it. I haven't found a way yet. It's not the chipset that's darkened though, it's a picture overlay. I went ahead and took out the lit up cave entrance on the left and replaced it with a dark one.
As for glowy stuff near the edges, I suppose I could, but that's not really what an illuminated backdrop does to stuff.

So. It's been a while.
With all due respect, I've known Ciel for a long time, and we haven't talked in years. I felt like I should say something. I didn't ignore your post, but like I said elsewhere, I don't want to make a little thank you comment every time anyone says anything nice to me. But I did read your post, and I appreciated it as well.
Besides, my previous comment was more to respond to Karsuman's comments than anything, but I didn't want to comment on it without also acknowledging that Ciel being supportive.

God damn it, I swear I always post my stuff right as the page is ending!
At any rate, those tiles are utilized perfectly Luchino. Nicely done.

That's an interesting idea. I don't know if I like the whole thing getting brighter or darker, but maybe I'll give it a shot and see what it looks like.
So. It's been a while.
Thanks, Ciel. That means a lot to me.
And yeah, as for my old buddy Karsuman... that was kind of a weird post.
You read that third paragraph and you get the sense the guy just hated me at that time or something. Him taking credit for R3P's story seems odd to me. He did help me out a lot, but going so far as to say he gave me a story so I could make something just isn't true. I suppose he's just misremembering.
The original R3P was going to be a full remake of Tarion Star, only with a better story (anyone who remembers Tarion Star will notice Siren, Arielle, Corrina and Gage in R3P share a name with the 4 protagonists from Tarion Star). Karsuman encouraged me to make a game less based not on a typical save-the-world story (as Tarion Star was) but rather something more based on politics, which was a great idea, so that's what I went with.
He spent a lot of time helping me with that, beta testing as I went, looking at cutscenes, but yeah, he makes it sound like it was basically his game that I was making, and that just wasn't the case.
For all his criticism of how I wrote characters, I think that was easily the strongest part of R3P; much stronger than the story turned out to be. Ah well.

I'm guessing that's what it's supposed to look like, since it's Ara Fell. XD It's not too dark though maybe a little lighter would work. Otherwise, nice, but you might want to get rid of those pixels at the bottom of the cliffs - the stray ones that aren't attached? They probably would have fallen into the aether by now. ;p
Well, they're... technically attached. But yeah, that's something I did myself a long time ago. Probably time to have my artist clean that up. Thanks for pointing it out.

I actually really love how dark it is. It creates a really amazing compositional contrast, and a really beautiful tone. It's indeed jawdropping. My only complaint is the bottom part of the floating island tiles because I think they should fade to a lighter color in order to blend better with the clouds, or have some floating rocks etc to better emphasize the idea of floating islands.
edit: it would be interestng if the mask gradually faded as you walked away from the edges / clouds disappear from the screen. It would imitate life as in when there's no strong lightsource your pupils dilate in order to see with increased contrast.
I was really trying to play up the contrast in this. It doesn't seem quite as dark when you actually play it, but I deliberately overdid it. Maybe just a touch lighter.
Unfortunately, the way I got this effect is by having a dark picture with transparent parts in the shape of the hole in the middle. Rm2k3 doesn't let you do anything with alpha, and I'm limited to 256 colors, so I feel like the nice blending effects just aren't something I can realistically fabricate.
Once I get back to Ara Fell 2, we'll just make it so the panorama isn't affected by any of the screen tinting, and this will get a lot easier.

So that's supposed to be water right? With the sky reflected? As it stands it looks more like a floating continent..
Well, I wouldn't want that...

I've started using shadow masks to try illuminate the sky in certain areas like caves. It really came out well, I think, though I've probably got the mask a little too dark.

We're (hopefully) going to be using dynRPG to edit the battle system, so I'm not entirely sure how we're going to do it. I'd like to get rid of the action bars and have an enemy phase and player phase for battles, and when each side goes, that counts as a turn.
We'll see how doable this is.
edit: It's not.
