Due to situations beyond his control, Ben has more idle time than he should have! "Hands" are the devil's playground and as such Ben is often drawing or diddling around in RPG-maker VX Ace to give his life a semblance of actual meaning.
A social introvert, Ben is NOT a social butterfly! However, he still desires to create forms of expression which incite genuine emotions, raucous laughter, and occasional deep thoughts. (Though often enough he misses that mark and ends up offending everyone instead!)

Nice "flash animation style" graphics! Obviously not everyone will take to it as positively as I have but I've played many awesome games which were pretty much moving line art. Admittedly the lines around the trees are a bit thick but the fact the characters are outlined in black too balances it out for the most part.

I'm okay with rape being used as long as it's addressed carefully and with consideration for the material. Using it to shock people or for sexuality's sake is wrong. Using it because the character story demands it, is fine. The amount of details put into explaining or showing the rape (I don't recommend showing it in great detail) can determine whether it's used correctly, too.
I've used rape with certain characters; like Narissa, though in her case it was assault with the intent to rape and she was able to get away before it progressed too far. That said, her issues aren't with intimacy but with the dark - since the attack happened at night, she feels more fear of the dark than she does of men themselves.
That said, I've never gone all-out and said what happened - just alluded to it - and that allusion was enough to give people the knowledge that something happened, even if they don't know the details.
It's how you handle the issue that changes whether it's R-rated or PG-rated. For example; in Selicia you hear the crying of women being ... hurt and assaulted, you know that Almissa was raped because she's pregnant and knows not who the father is, but the main story isn't about that, but her escape from that environment. There are some details - the crying sounds and begging - but the actual act is not shown at all because, frankly, it's enough to hear the women and see Almissa's state to understand what happened. No diagrams necessary. Still, Selicia is a rather dark game so I wouldn't recommend it for people too young.
Keep in mind, though, that children are more likely to see terrible stuff on TV and in movies than what we show in our games - especially if we handle certain issues delicately and with good reason.
Using rape is not a bad thing when it expands a character or story - using it for sexualisation or just 'cos, is.
I actually like how it was handled in Narissa's case. Especially how "when" it happened contributed to her fear of the dark. You can build a lot of concepts for that. For example,if she fights any monsters are they "real" or is it just her imagination working against her because she's frightened?
Regardless, the scene in question doesn't show much. Limitations of sprite animations are to thank for that.
"Spoilers below"
However,there is something I feel kind of uneasy about. Aka, though the sprites related to that memory don't actually "have sex" the dialogue is very graphic. A lot of it has to do with mental reconditioning and breaking said character down to make her more easy to manipulate. Beyond that the dialogue implies yes, the character was raped and even alludes to how she was raped.
It causes a big mental break-down for one of the other male characters who views her memory and it is tied to a much bigger plot point.

Frankly, I cannot say how well I handled it. It's like being a comedian with an offensive joke. Aka, said comedian might have a "positive message" but it doesn't make the joke any less offensive to a big chunk of the audience. Seth MacFarlane offends me all the time. I know in real life he actually seems like a great guy but I always felt as if his satire in Family Guy glorifies the very things it makes fun of. (At least for the less intelligent people who don't get the punchlines)
I thought the episode where Aquaman couldn't stop a rapist on the beach from assaulting a woman and the episode implying strippers were not "real people" crossed certain lines of good tastes. I know Seth or the writers under him had the best intentions but for me it came off all wrong.
In this case I might have pulled a Seth MacFarlane. Some players will understand my positive underlying message but others will likely misconstrue the whole scene and label me as some sort of terrible rape apologist.
Such is the tight-rope act we walk along when we delve into these issues. It's a good thing the beginning of my game has a lengthy disclaimer and warning. It was my fail-safe to give people the chance to climb back down from the diving board before having them dive head first into hell's kitchen!
I also decided to label my game title screen with a big fat "M" to avoid any further confusion. Alterego's good advice made me act on that one.
What aspects of the site do you use most? least?
Is there a way to put up stuff without it automatically being showcased on the main site? When I was taking down & putting up my edited art again I realized everything was popping up in the images section. Color me embarrassed!
Granted, I realize this generates interest for certain creators. I just wish I had more personal control over it I guess.
From now on, I'll simply upload less content per day. In other words, limit myself to only 3 uploaded pictures per visit.
Luckily,everything I need up is up so there is no need for me to be a posting-nut right now.

oh, lovely, yet another game where the greatest characterizing moment for a female character is rape.
So,rape is off the table because it's overdone? Might want to call George R R Martin and tell him to rewrite A Song Of Ice and Fire, rally against Walking Dead, and get in contact with the creators of True Blood.
Yes, one of my 4 female protagonists had issues with sexual assault. I'm sorry Mawk,but "rape" happens". Granted, this is a work of fiction but I wanted to add some realism to it.
Liam feels inadequate because his girlfriend Amy is a higher social class, Ben struggles with mental illness,Kara wants to fit in and be seen as normal, and Dwayne feels like he has a monster inside himself. Those are common themes too. Should I put them on my list of non-usable plot devices as well?
I apologize if I wasn't avante garde enough for you but this is a story focused around characters with human characteristics.

You can quote multiple people in the same post, you know. No need for quadruple posting.
Also, I have no idea what this is all about. There's a video? Risque material?? I see some nips in the images section, and a butt, and that's a bit much but not too bad so if my submission moderator thought this game was acceptable, then I'll roll with that.
That being said, no rules of censorship have changed - we are still a site for people 13 and older both women and children. No nudity, pornography, tasteless content, (including rape, racism etc.) is allowed. We are a private site but we are also subject to Google's AdSense policies if we are to continue showing their ads and collecting moneys (and they have gotten remarkably more restrictive recent on what they consider kosher material, unfortunately).
If something is initially accepted but then taken down after the fact it would be because the initial impression of the game at time of submission was different than how the game turned out in the end. As for this game, I can't see a lot of the images because they are blocked at work, so it is hard for me to judge right now, but we do have other "risque" and "adult situations" games here on RMN, so I am not anticipating this game to be so offensive that it needs to be blocked.
It's easy to rest assured it would be impossible for people to make actual "porn". If some individuals out there CAN reenact hardcore sex with Ace or XP sprites I don't know whether I should marvel at their spectacular skill as spriters or lament the fact they wasted all their potential meticulously creating their "doggy-style sprite" when they could have made something more epic and useful for the whole community. lol.
As for my game? Rape is addressed. One character has went through a lot of sexual abuse. But she also comes out of it a stronger person. I certainly wasn't trying to make fun of rape or imply it's easy to get over. (Though I find it strange in American entertainment how we play up "man rape" for laughs. Heck,even I laugh at man-rape jokes even though I know I should not.)
PS: Sorry I responded to each person individually,Ken. Force of habit you could say!
RMN v4.5 (and beyond) Feature Idea List
Hello lasses and gents. I only have one request and that would be an ESRB filter. We've known for a long time RMN isn't 100% kid friendly. However,I'd hate to see laws put in place that deny good rpg-maker games just because those games have mature rated content.
The ability given to allow makers to apply a rating to their own content would create a security filter that restricts people of certain age groups from being able to see said material.
I think this would help us protect younger viewers while at the same time allowing people to be mostly free with their expression. Anyway,you know the standard!
Ratings
T=for teen
E=for everyone
M= mature rated content.

Yeah, I agree with you mawk. Unfortunately, we have to develop a thick skin to accept that other people have that right. Pretty much means ignoring xenophobes, zealots, etc. or exercising our right to provide a counterpoint. Anyway, as Peter Parker's uncle once said: "With great power, comes great responsibility".
That's the problem. Just because someone is in power it doesn't make them just. Sure,they can make "laws" but that alone doesn't ensure everything is "alright" on the basis the big wigs tell us to roll over and go back to sleep. There have been many tyrants who started out on the road of good intentions. Uhh, I'm not impying anyone here in a mod position is a tyrant. What I'm saying applies to pretty much everywhere and there have been both good and evil people involved in politics. In other words, with so much white mingling with black it's a rather "gray" issue.

Aka, means Also Known As and is generally used for a name or specific term. Not a whole sentence. Aka, your using it really wrong haha
I'm terrible at using "Aka". lol. I'd promise to clean up my act but damn it,using it is so addictive! (It's word crack yo) But you're right, "In other words" is the proper term.

freedom of expression isn't the freedom to do whatever you want and not get called out for it. it isn't a defense against criticism, justice, or cause and effect. you're free to say what you like -- but other people, consequently, are free to say that what you say is bloody fucking stupid in response. I think if more people understood this the internet would be less of a gong show.
e: freedom of expression, also, is a constitutional right that only applies to the conduct of the US government. it's not a guaranteed right in any private space -- and guess what? a forum counts as a private space. your freedom of anything is not guaranteed, and the administration aren't required to respect it. you ever notice how the supreme court never seems to get involved when someone appeals a ban?
I'm not arguing against that at all. If rules change here and certain games get taken down for certain types of content I imagine there's nothing I can do about it beyond maybe advertising my game at another site. I'm well aware I'm not above what constitutes as the law in these parts.

I'd like to couple what Mawk said with this romantic notion I have about this place actually being a community, besides being being a private space... So really, just ask yourself: Is this the kind of speech that is worth championing in a space that you share with women and children? And I don't mean to sound moralizing to you, or condescending to them; It's just the truth of the situation.
Up until the day the site actually implements content filters, or raises the minimum age limit, or grows so big and detached that we don't care about alienating our fellow members, I think is in everyone's bests interest to find some common ground.
...But all in all I'm just glad you're actually considering the issue. That's more than can be asked from other 'stubborn' types around here.
I think my Achilles heel is I'm single so I'm ignorant to what concerned parents must go through. (The internet is a scary place when you have kids.) I'm pretty sure if I had kids of my own I'd feel more like you do.
Part of the reason was I was probably simply confused. Most of the content here is rather pg friendly but there's also dark psychological thrillers like Schuld, raucous (though possibly offensive to some people) comedies like the Kanye West rpg, and even pictures of space vampire hookers. (Personally I found that hilarious but I admit I'm not always the most mature individual out there. lol.)
Most likely a kid isn't going to find anything too damaging but yeah, we do have adult content laying around RMN in some sectors. That's what gave me the impression my game with darker themes could still be a candidate for downloading.
