The Direction of RPG Maker Community

Well, yeah, BloodRose, you're stating something all right... an opinion, not a fact!

And do I read it wrong or are you admitting to posting the opening message just to stir shit up? Besides, what exactly is it that you posit? That you're no longer 16 and too experienced to see home-made games as fresh? I bet you a dollar if you were 16 now and discovered RM for the first time, plenty of those games you put down as derivative you would view as being as original as ABL or, khem, Chimera Report were to you back during (pre-) GW days.

Get a grip, man. You're bashing elitism, but your posts reek of the same petty politics that destroyed GW and other sites from within back in the day, when, you know, no one actually made games, just talked about making them, with only a handful of people producing anything of value.

If you know what makes a great game, then I challenge you to create something that will go down in RM history. Create the next Ydunn Ymiraldor. Create the next A Blurred Line. Create the next Dragon Destiny, Kinetic Cipher, Chimera Report, or Romancing Walker.

How about making your own ABL and showing the hoi polloi how it's done first?

"Mature" games?

Whenever you read that a game is "mature", it really means there's boobs, innuendo, and swearing. Extreme violence is a safe bet too.

Games touching upon politics, social issues, philosophy, high art, and the like on a deeper than superficial level are not mature simply because they are non-existent. And until games come to be written by individuals over 40 years old and brought up on something else than commercial pulp, mature games might as well not materialize, ever.

'Postmodern' RM Games

Keep playing, it gets pretty deconstructive later on.

'Postmodern' RM Games

The only *good* game of that sort I played that wasn't merely a random mishmash of resources and ideas (think Dooms) was Longing Ribbon. Make sure to punch in the code to disable battles (ugh).

That, and Space Funeral :D

we be droppin' some robo beatz

Awesome, and I mean AWESOME music! I spent a good hour today listening to the above tune as background for drawing. Great stuff. The other two are fine as well, I hope you (or the composer) release the OST as standalone in the future for listening pleasure!

Yeah, fuck you too, asshole.

God forbid people talk about something that bothers them and exchange opinions on the matter. There's always some dumbfuck who tell others that instead of whining about the 1% they should get their shit together and start a bank too. Or make a better game. As if it has any bearing on the topic.

News flash, you wanker, maybe other game makers don't wish to sell their game for money, but it pains them to see some poor schmucks be tricked into giving some guy money for essentially nothing. Did that thought occur to you or are you just here to spout some fucking tired Internet memes and offend fellow RMN-ers instead of using your brain to form legitimate opinions?

Sorry for the outburst, but every time this asshole opens his mouth I want to strangle him.

BTW, mister Vacant Sky, how does it feel to know some idiot with no history of game-making made more money through KS than you, a person with an established fan base and plenty of experience under your belt. Fair, isn't it?

KICKSTARTER, THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE!

Of course it is not illegal, but it is morally dubious and I have all the right to call him out on this. It would be like me setting out to produce an indie movie (and let me tell you, I never held a camera in my life) and promising wonders when I know full well I know shit about film-making. When there's no money involved, fine, it's a waste of time and a a bunch of people let down, but nothing major. But begging for money and amassing 40 grand or however much it got in the end? That's a fucking joke!

I wasn't talking about you, Sailerius, so don't get your pants in a bunch. You've proven capable of producing quality content, so I have nothing against you Kickstarting your game.

And let me tell you this - you can use RTP, I don't give a shit, but you HAVE TO HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD before kicking off a fund raiser! Otherwise you're no better than a hobo begging people for money, you're simply lying through your teeth about what you will do with the money. Well, at least there's a chance the hobo honestly doesn't have any for food and won't spend it on crack or something...

But, and that's a big but, if he's confident in his abilities, then he's simply an idiot and should never be let anywhere near other people's money.

Oh, and, like, there's nothing stopping him, or anyone else for that matter, from producing a 15-minute game and stating "but I made a game with your money, see, it's a game, what do you want from meee!" and getting scot-free. KICKSTARTER! SCAM-PROOF!

The guy's making his FIRST RPG MAKER GAME and you think 20 grand is gonna result in a decent game? Why not make it 100k, heck, 500k and see what masterpiece he comes up with? Get a fucking clue.

Asking for money for your first game when you know full well you're not going to deliver regardless of how much you rake in is simply a scam to me. It's no different than assaulting a bunch of kids with a baseball bat and taking their lunch money to finance your RPG MAKER magnum opus, just with fewer concussions involved.

Still, I'm on the fence regarding who's the bigger idiot in this, the guy for sucking money out of other losers in hopes of making his dream game that will never materialize, and at best will be a letdown for all parties involved, or the backers who believe the guy has a modicum of talent. I'd rather donate $5 to a local bum so that he can drown his sorrows in a bottle of cheap wine than give it to this hack.

Custom menus are that personal touch now? What about, I don't know, AN ORIGINAL STORY? Non-cliched, non-idiot characters? Non-anime fantasy setting? Not this regurgitated crap about the chosen one defeating the Dark Lord with the power of friendship?

I agree with Darken on the topic of newer amateur games being somewhat engineered and lacking in personality. What are the chances nowadays of someone setting out to make something along the lines of The Longing Ribbon, ABL, Grave Spirit, Backstage, just to name a few, instead of pandering to the RPG crowd in order to gain popularity, and by popularity I mean followers on FB and Twitter. Now the same people are "scamming" gamers on Kickstarter or Indiegogo through endless fantasy games based on a formula that was tired in bloody 1994! That was nearly 20 years ago! And they have the nerve of claiming their games are "reinventing the classic jRPG formula" or "offering a unique twist on the old RPG story" You know why they do it? Because in the world of crowdfunding, people don't feel like it's worth it anymore to spend hours on end making a free, but unique game that is a realization of their own vision. They'd rather appeal to the lowest common denominator and suck their dicks wallets dry. That's the sad truth. There's fewer and fewer game developers that do it out of the love for the hobby, for the joy of creation, and more that see it as means of generating a quick buck fooling around in VX making RTP maps. I mean, getting a real job is hard in this economy, am I right?

Rant over.
