Indeed both very unexpected and cool, thanks for the news! Honestly no idea how this percolated all the way there.
I had thought about trying to advertise the contest a bit outside the community, in the beginning when I was afraid no one was going to sign up. Thankfully my fears were quickly allayed, so I guess there'll be plenty of entries to analyze already (even assuming that roughly three quarters of the contestants are going to drop out, which is my expectation for any contest)

It would be nice to see this kind of endeavors turn into a thing, though. Game jams and events focused less on crafty implementation and more on exploration (in a conceptual rather than artsy sense). It would seem that there is an audience.

Spurting French, a new technique for your rhetorical game. Not as dirty as it sounds, but pretty aggressive nonetheless.

"Oh non! I am now covered in le French words. Sacrebleu!"

If AI and other things like this are limiting factors, you an always submit an incomplete version without them (like a 2-player version instead), provided the base mechanics are clearly implemented. It might put you at a slight disadvantage, but you won't be the only one, and it's a good occasion to at least share your ideas and have feedback, even if you finish it only afterwards.

Honestly I greatly prefer good ideas with bad implementation to the reverse. Perhaps I should have made this a design doc contest :D

Out the Window Review

A piece of IF with a positive review and an author looking like perplexed Antimony are good ways to grab my attention. This was cute and funny, although perhaps less unconventional for me as I've played my share of IFs (mostly the esoteric ones with parsers). I've always loved how IF is basically decades ahead of all other video games in terms of trying unique point of views, unreliable narrators, complex mental or emotional situations and utterly weird logic.
But it has its clichés, like, say, starting in your room looking at you desk, or removing things stuck with gum :P I was kind of expecting you to pull a 9:05, not just some incongruous turn of event. Still, gotta love dem mouse and cat descriptions.

Thanks Treason, I'll take a look at it very soon!

soulkeeper> Hahah now that makes me feel old. Although it won't be long before Final Fantasy VII is older than Cloud was in it.

Archeia> No there's no problem with that!
I'll tell you a secret that you shouldn't repeat: I'm not completely obsessed about forbidding gauges, pretty much because any number could be represented on screen as gauge (including the turn number for instance).
My reason for that rule was to invite people to look in other directions than just changing MP a little or adding a new Limit Break bar - too many rpg systems are just elementary puzzles on communicating vessels.
I don't think I've been entirely successful, but who knows, I might be surprised (or I may enjoy clever communicating vessels like in Unraveled - it's just I wish it weren't the only thing that people do).

Fleuret Blanc.

Well you can help getting it in the limelight by writing a review! I've started it a couple of days ago but real life has finally caught up. I've lots of things to say about it though, so I may write one of my own sooner or later!

(I realized that I had actually played it an eternity ago, for probably roughly 15 minutes before forgetting to continue for some reason or other).

Congrats Treason! Just by curiosity, who were the people who contributed?
Each battle attacks one of the rationales of the contest.
Haha I'd like to see this.

It would be nice if you and caparo could put the links here. I'll add them to the main page as a provisional measure before the event closes.

NB: Don't worry about people copying on you, that will be kind of obvious to see if they stole anything. And since the implementation is not the critical thing here it can be nice to share nuts and bolts around, if you agree to it of course.

soulkeeper> Wow, Yuri's Revenge? as in the 15 years old Red Alert expansion, or am I missing something? Er, anyway, you still have more than enough time to come up with something ;)

Exeunt Omnes

Thanks a lot! Much appreciated :) (Also, scary avatar you have :D )

(Kyla> honestly I haven't read him in an eternity. I should try again. But I believe it's easier if you're German; concept agglomeration comes more naturally ;) )

Hmm. It would be more pleasant to be able to test the system against an AI, but we're not judging your AI making abilities (except to the extent that AI rules can themselves be part of the mechanics), so... For me it would be acceptable, but I'd like to hear the other judges on that point.

caparo> Congrats on being the first to finish. Are you sure the submission went through? I can't seem to see it.
