Fundamental RPGology Thread

This is the follow-up discussion for the game design event Fundamental RPGology

Once again, thanks to everyone who took part to the contest, or couldn't but still want to talk about it!

Many awesome ideas have been exchanged and more are certainly to come. Feel free to use this thread to discuss each other's entries, ideas that you could not implement, or anything else that could make a contribution to the discussion on how to improve, refine and expand the design of RPG battle systems!

Contest entries:

Here are links to all the accepted entries, sorted by author in alphabetical order (protest if I forgot you!). Many can be found on the main event page but some have their own gamepage, so it's better to centralize everything here.

Oneshot Review

author=AsgarZigel
As far as I know it has been disqualified not because of the RM2k3 (they probably have a legal version), but because the RTP-RT.exe was modified to make the various special featues possible, which is against the EULA.

Too bad, really :/

Even without the added slight of modifying the exe, 1) they didn't own a legal copy, and 2) this debate doesn't belong here, but one should know Enterbrain has been trying to do everything to erase RMs before XP from the surface of the Earth, and I highly doubt they would have accepted even an entry made on the legal Japanese version (it's pretty much forbidden to discuss these engines on the official boards) so Oneshot had no chance to begin with, really.

A sad affair anyway.

Haha too bad seiromem, I was hoping your feud with outcry would create some motivation!

I am excited as to how this'll turn out :D

If I may ask though, how many people are in?
Six? I dunno. Someone could've finished and did not post about it here.
I'm just curious...

I'm hoping for two or three last minutes entries. Out of 30 or so entries, having a turnout of 8-9 would give the 75% dropout rate I expected.

It may seem a little disappointing after 20 pages of comments and everything, but I think it's normal in basically any participative thing (unless you have a ten thousand dollars grand prize, I guess).

In my experience, from associations to game jams to teaching at the uni, the very best you can do is: one quarter of the people go all the way, and perhaps another half get something away from it, some renewed interest or awareness, although you'll never hear from them. The last quarter is inevitably people who end up not bothering or hating your guts or something :P

How you deal with getting worse at something?

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but it's an interesting problem that I'm faced with very directly, and I disagree with almost everyone before so maybe my perspective will be useful.

Honestly, getting worse happens. Often it's just in your head, but sometimes not, and it's kinda important to introspect until you're able to tell in which category you fall.

I bet your favorite book by your favorite author isn't their very last one.
There's a lot of subjectivity involved, but there are many objective cases as well - not even talking about things like physical condition, it's known in math that before forty is when you're most likely to get things done.

Mostly, it means you're becoming someone else. With different priorities and possibilities. Sometimes it's worth fighting against, sometimes not, depending on what you gain from this change. And that's not something we can decide for you.

Hi good people of the Earth. Time to wrap up now, only 30 hours to go! (plus some leeway for people who are on Hawaii time and were confused about the deadline, but you'll have to wear a flower shirt to prove you're legit)

I hope we'll get some more entries in that final stretch! Don't worry if you didn't finish - or start - please feel free to try out other people's submissions and take part in the ensuing discussion (I'll open the forum thread in a bit).

Thanks again to those who made this contest possible. It has taught me more than you would believe.

That's really a cool thing to hear, thanks as well to everyone involved! :)

Oneshot Review

(Un)Fun fact: It's been disqualified due to using RM2k3. Thought you might want to update your review accordingly. Otherwise, good job!

Great point! Actually I do remember noticing that Normandy was mentioned both as part of Roland's backstory and at some other point, now I guess it was Odon saying that his sister went there. Plus, Beland is very close phonetically to Blanc.

ivoryjones> I blame you :P

Merlandese> Actually it would be cool to have some insight into your ideas, if you want to make a kind of origin story blog post. And no need to be bashful about being your game's greatest fan, any creator is either this or its greatest hater! (often both)

Fundamental RPGology

Got it!
I am seriously thinking about having a part 2 some day, perhaps focusing on another aspect of RPG design - but most other aspects are hard to showcase in a short contest entry (things like dungeon survival and resource management and game balance). Perhaps small examples of leveling or crafting systems and quest design, something like that. Anyway, I guess we will discuss that on the forum thread among other things.

But first we judges will have to deal with the first round, which is going to be a bit complicated because I suddenly have to fly over an ocean next Monday for family reasons. Some prizes may be kinda late due to this, I'll make an announcement about our judging deadline and everything when I've got the situation better in hand.

WetMattos> Well I'm glad that our little contest had this unexpected outcome! Feel free to submit as much as you've got when the deadline strikes, we'll have some discussion afterward for you to expose your ideas anyway.

outcry> Makes sense, although I think even a barebones battle (with only a few skills) would be better than a completely hand-holding one. But I haven't seen your system so that might not be true in your case. Anyway thanks for sharing.

Fleuret Blanc.

New ad:

"Fleuret Blanc - the game where every role is played by Ben Kingsley"

Unfortunately, they tried that once with Eddie Murphy and it wasn't such a good plan.
How did you come up with the concept by the way (Fleuret Blanc, I mean, not Ben Kingsley)? You should make a kind of commentary or blog post, that would be interesting - unless you already have something like it on the Freebird boards.

I think I got at least five tales in total, but I don't remember which were in the attic.
Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Pinocchio, the Stone and the Caterpillar.
