Hi all !
I like 16-bits RPGs (especially action RPGs) where you feel the quest behind the lines of code. I also like strategy, puzzle solving, immersive stories, tabletop RPG and LARP.
I'm a hobbyist C programmer who likes to work on custom game mechanics. My very first project was a very basic map generator for Genesia, aka Ultimate Domain https://rpgmaker.net/users/Irog/locker/UltimateDomainWorld.zip
I also want to help developers polishing their projects with my player feedback. So I'll be happy to test your game !
See you around,
Irog

Games here that can run on RG 351?
You can install EasyRPG on your console and them play any game made in RPG Maker 2000 and 2003. Simply open the game search page and set the engine to one of these: RPG Maker 2000, RPG Maker 2003, RPG Tsukuru 2000, RPG Tsukuru 2003, EasyRPG (unfortunately, you can't select multiple engines in a single search).

The solution in the tutorials seems to simply look for several fonts that might be installed. Such solution would fail if, like me, none of the fonts are installed. Your solution is much better because you specify a fallback font AND provide that font in your game folder "Fonts".
This weekend I'll try to make wine play RMXP midi so we'll have a more elegant solution than forcing the game maker to convert all the music tracks into ogg.

aquatorrent, I was looking for a way to display text without the need for RMXP because I don't have it. And found one: add the arial font to my Wine install. But your script is very useful in these situations:
1) Players who forget to install the custom font used by a RMXP game
2) Players who can't install a custom font because they don't have Windows administrator rights or are on Linux
3) Provide a fail safe text display
So, I think you should go to the RPG Maker XP page and add your useful script to the scripts.

Thanks for your nice comment about Rat Deck.
G* gives download issues. Could you upload your file to another file sharing site like fileconvoy.

Now that the Wine font display issue is solved, I was able to read the iterations in your house. There are some neat ideas like the miniature Lego house and plenty of references to gaming, pokemon, some programming and a oddly located toaster. Our hero can walk over the table with the "1001 Gameshark cheats" and also walk over the window. It's a cool idea to be able to put sunglasses on and off. You could even change the interactions when sunglasses are on or off.

It works right out of the box !
author=aquatorrentHow can I apply your trick to another RMXP game ?
if you meant to ask how i applied the font on the game, i just put these lines below begin in the Main script:that way, the game will fallback to freesans if arial is not available, and since freesans appears smaller than arial, i end up increasing the font size whenever freesans is used.Font.default_name = ["Arial","FreeSans"]
if !Font.exist? ("Arial")
# set custom setting for freesans font
Font.default_size = 24
end

Thank you aquatorrent!
Your new build works with a bit of tweaking and looking at your previous build:
1) The game couldn't find the RTP so, in Game.ini, I changed "RTP1=Standard" into "RTP1="
2) The game couldn't find the sound effects so, I copied the Audio/SE from your previous build
Then I was able to explore your house with sounds, music and text! The interactions in the house clearly indicate that your hero lives by himself and is quite lazy !
I'll dig deeper in Wine configuration to make it play midi music. Most of my games have midi music and all play them just fine, so I should be able to configure Wine to play midi music from other games.
How did you tell RPG Maker XP to use the font you provided ? (This can help me setup other RMXP games and help RMXP game makers to provide a safe fallback)

I'm using Linux and I tried to run your game in Wine but failed. If your engine can make a Linux build, I'll be happy to test it.

I tested your new HouseMap.zip. You've made a nice cozy house. The rooms are neatly separated and have good proportions. It is easy to move around in the house. Unfortunately I don't see any text and don't hear any music but the sound effect of opening the menu plays just fine. I'm using Linux and run your game in Wine; so Windows fonts aren't available and can't be installed. Is there a way to add the font to your game files and make the game use it (maybe by adding a line "UseFont=..." in the file Game.ini ?)

I'm using Linux and managed to stat your game using Wine but it doesn't go beyond the first loading screen :-( It still responds to F4, F5 and F11. If your engine can make a Linux build, I'll be happy to test it.

Thanks a lot for your comments.
author=StarmageIndeed a cozy place depends on what you are :-)
I guess an untidy deck full of holes would be pretty cozy if you're a cute little rat.
author=Frogge
Would've been nice to see this fleshed out a bit more, maybe with some interactions and more maps to explore.
author=MarrendActually, my custom engine lacks a proper event system (I'll work on it). The initial idea was that you could find other rats that would start following you around. And you would end up leading a big pack of rats !
I'm not sure if how one is able to navigate this area is the only interaction, or not, though.
Favorite version of RPG Maker?
RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 are the best ! I love their retro style, the large collection of games made using them and the ability to run the games in Linux thanks to EsayRPG.
