IROG'S PROFILE

Hi all !

I like 16-bits RPGs (especially action RPGs) where you feel the quest behind the lines of code. I also like strategy, puzzle solving, immersive stories, tabletop RPG and LARP.

I'm a hobbyist C programmer who likes to work on custom game mechanics. My very first project was a very basic map generator for Genesia, aka Ultimate Domain https://rpgmaker.net/users/Irog/locker/UltimateDomainWorld.zip

I also want to help developers polishing their projects with my player feedback. So I'll be happy to test your game !

See you around,
Irog

I Have Two Conflicting Plot Ideas for the Same Game Concept. Help!

Choosing Unity is a bad choice if you care about the longevity of your game development environment. Closed-source commercial software are maintained only as long as they are commercially viable and no-one can update the code later if it's closed-source.

The only closed-source game engine from 20 years ago that's still relevant today is... RPG Maker 2003 because its passionate community made it commercially viable again, and because EasyRPG enables anyone to play the games on modern platforms like Linux, consoles and mobiles.

Your best choices to maximize the longevity of your game development environment are free & open-source engines and libraries. You can use Godot or build your game using SDL2 and a programming language. I personally program in C but SDL2 is compatible with most languages. You started programming in C++, right ?

How much lore should you find in a university library ?

Early in one of my games, which has a minimalist intro, I want to give the player access to a university library. And, to convey the feeling of being in a university library, I think it should contain a lot of books describing the world, including lore non-relevant for the story to come. But this idea conflicts the following:
1) Most RPG players read ALL the books and might get overwhelmed.
2) The story relevant lore will be told later bit by bit as it becomes relevant for the story.
3) If you play any of my games, you'll notice that I favor building game mechanic over game narrative. Lore writing isn't my strongest skill.

So, how much lore do you expect to find in a university library to make you FEEL you are in a university library ?

Hola!

If you want to have fun trying new things in RPG Maker 2003, the event Boulevard of Broken 2k3 Dreams is perfect for you! The event even has goals as simple as "Project1 - play around in the engine with the default assets to figure out how the engine works".

I Have Two Conflicting Plot Ideas for the Same Game Concept. Help!

It's always good to have very detailed lore. The difficult part is to choose how and how much you convey to your players.

Bringing Back a Potential RM Renaissance

More 2k3 games are always good, especially now that EasyRPG can run them on modern OS like Linux. EasyRPG also comes with an editor.

if you manage to figure out how to make wine play it it would be better as i dont have a clear solution for it. Searching only leads me to different results and i'm not sure if they'll work like that. I saw one result that tells to run it in proton, though. Maybe it will help?

All my findings are now in this tutorial: Play RPG Maker XP games in Linux.
Thank you for the links you posted and the info you shared. They contributed to build the tutorial.

Note that I've only used the Linux version of EasyRPG. The Windows versions are compiled from the same source code, so they should work just as well... unless Micro$oft introduces incompatibilities in some "update".
