LOCKEZ'S PROFILE

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Somebody talk me into/out of this

If you are a good photographer, or a good google image searcher, you can often make custom tiles out of photos. Or out of paintings, or whatever. If you do it right they can even blend in pretty well with ripped graphics, as long as the ripped graphics don't have a lot of hard lines, or you add hard lines to the custom graphics.

On the downside, this is actually just as much work as doing them by hand, because you still have to zoom in to 8x and make pixel edits and such to make sure it all lines up correctly. And also on the downside, many of the indoor objects will look really stupid with super deformed charsets, so you might have to rip charsets from a game with more realistic proportions (like Suikoden 2). But on the upside, you don't need any artistic talent.

I am pretty bad at this since I'm just starting out with attempting it, but I've seen it done really well. (In the video, the vat, the crane and the walls are from photos, while everything else is taken from RMXP resource sites and is presumably ripped from various games. Still needs a lot of work.)

Ways to improve the community/maintain its awesomeness.

I know what you're really trying to say, I'm just objecting to some of the minor points you brought up in the process of trying to say that.

But if the game is a piece of garbage, then they should know. They should know that it's not just that I didn't like it. They need to know everything that's bad about it so that they can fix it as well as possible.

If they're so upset by this that they don't fix the problems, then I don't really consider it a loss. If I hadn't pointed out the problems, they wouldn't have fixed them anyway. If they can't handle learning that their game has severe problems without having a breakdown, then they're not cut out for creating things and should find a non-creative hobby or get counseling.

In short, just say exactly what you mean. Giving inaccurate feedback helps no one.

I don't think you know what optimistic means. It has nothing to do with being decent or obnoxious and has nothing to do with social interaction.

If you actually meant people should be more optimistic, then... I guess that's okay, people shouldn't get discouraged, you should keep driving forward and try to make the best game ever. If you put enough work into it, and are good enough at design or get help from people who are, you totally can.

If you actually meant people should be polite, then I disagree. Conveying information with as much clarity as possible comes before all else. You don't need to go out of your way to be rude, but you don't need to go out of your way to be polite, either. If being more civil would either make your argument weaker or distract people from the argument, then don't do it. Truth and knowledge come above all else.

I agree with everything Crystalgate said, it's a very good analysis of the subject and I can't see any faults in it. I particularly have to agree that moving more slowly doesn't make me notice more.

Discussion isn't drama!

Sir, I believe I have a problem with your paradigm.

I kid, I kid, point 4 was actually unrelated.

But seriously, I agree that discussion isn't drama. If something has anything to do with RPG Making, directly or indirectly, then there is no reason to ever not talk about it!

Complaints are never needless, by definition! If something is incorrect or suboptimal or problematic, then please let people know! Otherwise it will never get fixed. And even if it doesn't get fixed, it still raises awareness of the problem, which is good. Complaining about a problem is actually the most important step in fixing it. Most problems exist because the person who can fix them doesn't recognize that they're problematic. If I or someone else is doing something wrong, keep telling us until we learn.

Hating something is fine, it just means you love its opposite. If you have no hate, then you have no love. If you have no love, then you have no passion. If you have no passion, then find a hobby you're passionate about instead of this one! Speak your passions, let us know! This site is useless if we don't discuss things, and our discussions are useless if the views we express are so flip-floppy or so unobtrusive or so inoffensive that no one believes we really care about them. If I don't think you really care about your points, I'm not going to take them as seriously! Make me believe that I'm wrong, and explain exactly why!

I think it's stupid to have to hold down the B button for the entire goddamn game. What's the point? Why not make that the normal speed?

You can have a walk button if you want. Lots of games do that. It makes way more sense, because people want to move at the faster speed 99% of the time. You can then make some puzzles that require it... or don't, either way.

When running through a dungeon, I think running makes sense. Maybe your game doesn't have traditional dungeons, and every area is very compact; but if you have dungeons, make the player move fast enough to not be awful. You can always make the player move at a slower speed during cut scenes, which is, I assume, where most of the ambiance and meaningful detail comes out in a horror game. And I assume you'll have quite a lot of cut scenes, so the player will often be stopped.

RM2003 Help File not working in Windows 7?

Yes, uh, the validation process has to be done before the download. That's how windows update works. It won't give you updates until it validates your computer.

Seriously how hard is it to install crap in windows? You just keep hitting the next button until you're done. If you really have trouble with something that simple, might I suggest that software design is not a good hobby for you?

Tips on Making Good Forests

That forest is the size of six large dungeons. Keep the same shape but shrink it to be half as tall and half as wide.

Generally I find that a plain, ordinary forest with nothing in it is a really bland area. The same is true of a plain, ordinary cave with nothing in it, or a plain, ordinary desert with nothing in it, or a plain, ordinary mountain with nothing in it. Not only is it boring to walk through, but it often feels like there's no reason for it to even exist as a dungeon. If there's nothing of interest at all, why isn't it just part of the world map?

So, these days I often try to add some points of interest to my maps, especially if they're natural areas. Maybe something as simple as a pair of huge Gondor style statues in the river to draw the player's eye. Maybe a cabin in the woods, containing a person who has some optional dialogue and a shop. Maybe I change a forest into a forest with a ruined temple in it, and the player goes in and out of the temple as they pass through the area. Maybe I give the jungle area a series of magic circles that send the player into a negative world, that has essentially the same map but with some puzzle-like interactions, Link to the Past style. Maybe a secluded sect of mages has built a tower into the mountainside.

The point is to make the area not feel like utterly bland filler - give it some landmarks, some meaning. I feel like this is way more important than well-placed flowers and bushes.
