A scripting question about sprites
Ctrl+Shift+F can be really helpful when you're learning the base scripts. It searches all sections instead of just your current one. :) So you could search Sprite_Character.new to see everywhere the system creates an instance of that class.

I haven't worked with XP in a while, but if I remember correctly (and I'm understanding you correctly), then you might want to take a look at Spriteset_Map I believe it's called. Again, going off memory here, but I believe Spriteset_Map creates a new Sprite_Character which references to a variable (I forget it's name though!) which is an instance of Game_Character to get the "character_name" (which is the name of the file used).

Keep in mind I haven't played the game myself yet. (Though I plan to after this review; great review Eliminator.) In regard to the monster capturing system, do you still gain full experience when you capture a monster? (versus killing it.) I dunno, perhaps reduced (or no) experience might get the player wanting to outright kill the monster instead of just going for the cheap ko with capturing?

Funnily enough, a friend pointed out that same issue last night (the not knowing who's doing what), and it's prob mostly the result of WIPness of the game. You might note that the bug girl has a casting animation (among others) and the player has no animations? Yeah, we didn't have time to finish the player animations yet. Thanks for giving it a second whirl :)

@TMT: We were blitzing this weekend to get the map done for RSD, so like you noted, most of the map is unshaded at the moment. As it is, we're debating keeping the shading fairly simple, ie the bookcases, but we haven't fully decided yet. And thanks, I'm rather proud of that message box.
@Deacon: I really like the glow on the crystal rock things, but there's a couple spots where it looks off, mostly when one is right beside a cliff edge.
