Cover Your Eyes Review

Aw I was just finally done with updating the game, now I just want to go back in and add it in. I suppose no one would mind though and it would be a really neat way to offer an alternative take on the game. If I were to do it, I'd keep the news report sort of ambiguous and provide reasonable doubt for the audience to speculate if the events actually happened or it was simply a hallucination. I'll send you a video via PM once it's done and see what you think XD

Cover Your Eyes Review

Funnily enough...

I did have that exact same idea for a non canon bonus scene after the credits. The cutscene revolved around a breaking news report retelling certain events in the game but reframed as Chloe going on a killing spree. Never got around to the idea because I thought it would've been too confusing. Might add it in if I feel inspired enough one day.

Cover Your Eyes Review

Thank you for the review! :)

It was definitely challenging and fun to make.

This isn't an adventure game, but an arcade survival horror, so don't expect to read long descriptions each time you interact with something.

Awww I did want to have some internal monologing upon examining some objects but unfortunately what happened was that due to years of messing with the RGSS, I'd unintentionally broken text boxes for dialogue and had to compromise with lots of pictures instead! Did place some readable letters in one or two spots but they ended up not working after a while. It's practically held together with convoluted work arounds.

Cover your Eyes is a classic survival horror, anyway it is not the classical zombie horror scenario (let's just say that there are some surreal/supernatural events), and provides an intriguing story and adventure (even if I expected a particular twist in the end but... nope!).

Ooo what twist did you think? There are a number of occasions where Chloe is questioning her sanity/perception of reality and I was using the "unreliable narrator" trope as an red herring for the player, I am curious if you thought along the same lines?

CYE What went right and what went terribly wrong retrospective.

@Sgt M & Darken. Thank you both for the words of encouragement. You can only read too many case studies and online tutorials in how to prepare but going through
the process yourself is totally different and the only real way to gain experience :)

Brave Hero Yuushaended up being a bit of a flop and it got to the point where they were only ever selling if I put them on sale for like fifty cents. My numbers have only been dropping ever since.

Aw I think it might of reached that stage now. Was super pumped for the Halloween sale and was thinking "Yes my game is horror, could get word of mouth going" so I did a 50% discount and sold two units D:

I have noticed my sales do better when it dosn't coincide with Steam holiday sales, wasn't too disheartened but made me thoughtful enough to post this blog. I have a price cut under review at the moment, so will see how that fares before hitting the 90% button.

Just out of curiosity how many wishlists did you launch with?

Roughly the 600 mark. Did read somewhere that it must be at least 1000 to appear on the front page at launch, maybe steams algorithm didn't pick it up as much.

At the moment my wishlist counter stands at 1350. with 100 units sold (majority through sales) and 7 returns. 27 units were wishlist conversions, all the rest were from people passing by.

What I could never figure out was why the wishlist conversion rate is currently sitting under 1%. And what are the contributing factors behind it?

It's fascinating what the psychology behind potential consumers plays into purchasing behavior vs wishlisting
and how it all comes together. Pretty sure I'm not alone in trying to figure it out XD

CYE What went right and what went terribly wrong retrospective.

Thank you Cal. Might of been abit hard on myself here or there.

I think there should be at least two people for a commerical indie game. One deals with gamedev whilst the other handles community building/marketing.

Would definitly not reccomend to quit your day job and work full time on your game like some people on twitter or reddit attempt to do. I tried that for a year and ended up being miserable and unproductive, meanwhile I found having at least a part time job made one more productive with their time. Even if it was 8 hours work and 3 hours plus gamedev everyday D:

The gameplay/story loop had an sparse tempo e,g investigate the hotel for 15 minutes with no dialogue and then cutscene on completion. The worst offender was probably "find entry to hospital, get key item from hospital, escape through the sewers" all with little dialogue. The start and endgame is story heavy but midgame is inconsistent.

Think that's why I feel like CYE has an identity crisis, part of it wants to be story driven whilst the other wants to reach the next set piece.

I am finding it fun/theaputic to write about though XD

Edit: Just spotted your message LBR, My main takeaway is to not work myself into a bubble and get outside help. Going to try and take a more chilled approach from now on and not place too much pressure on myself.

About what happened in the "2021 MISAOS - THOUGHTS, IDEAS, PLANS" thread

One of the only reasons the community is so open to all people is because we've put our foot down on various interactions in the past. We used to be fine with all kinds of dumb shit, and now we're not.

100%

I used to be put off from posting in the first place from the toxicity that used to go on here. Still barely post though! Only because I'm busy.

But I do feel that it has turned around for the better in the last couple of years due to how Libby has steered the ship. Some of us have been on the site for over a decade now and I suppose we have a sense of collective ownership in the direction of our community. However there does need to be a fullstop on certain things, if Libby implemented every suggestion then the site would probably end up collapsing into a incoherent mess. There has to be some "Tough love" every now or then.

2021 Misaos - Thoughts, Ideas, Plans

Quick suggestion, how about we have a little message pop up on the download page?

Example

"Thank you for downloading *StarSkippiscool*

If you liked this game and it's your kind of jam, maybe nominate me for the end of year Misaos? Let your voice be heard"

It would be a really good way to prime the player into thinking about the misaos right before they even started the game. You can still do quarterly reminders, but I do honestly think that a simple message per person per download would go a long long way.

Cover Your Eyes

Yeah I wanted to immortalize and pay tribute to him in some way. Weirdly enough, the mouth scene with buttons was ripped straight out of my nightmares from years ago. Comes across as goofy ingame aha.

Don't know how long I've had Buttons as my avatar. Never going to change it though :D

30% off this Christmas and looking for a review :)

Aww I made that footage like a year ago. Didn't expect it to come in handy for the winter sale! Might have to make summer/Halloween themed ones at some point. I've watched your streams and I am a bit concerned about your health gauge at the moment :o

You're always welcome to leave a review Cash :)
