STORMCROW'S PROFILE

>look StormCrow

You see not a bird but an American lady who likes other ladies. Oscillates between shy as a mouse and babbling violently, seemingly at random.

I like badasses. I like babes. I like badass babes the best. Okay...actually I like doggoes the very best, but I aspire to make games about badass babes is my point.

I use music from bands and artists in the free games I make: the frustrated filmmaker in me is very enamored of scoring scenes with rock'n'roll soundtracks Scorcese or Tarantino style. In addition to being a time honored tradition in cinema, this has a history in AAA videoogames as well (for a really great use of it, see Bioshock: Infinite). If I was a millionaire, I'd totally license these songs so I could actually use them legally.

I Would Like To Review Some Games That Haven't Been Reviewed

On the tone of the game, we were actually trying to go for a general silly tone, sort of like the more campy Batman stuff and didn't really intend to be super serious, so it's a world where our gay couple MCs get to live in peace. Also, trust me, I really wanted to put cursing in the game's script, but that was not allowed. Like, the DJ's table used to say "get fucked" but we regrettably had to change it.

I have to say though, uhhh, basically saying that our game isn't homophobic enough isn't exactly a normal criticism. I wanted to reply to this earlier but it just kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth, if I have to be honest. Aside from all that though, I'm glad that you had a good time and I'm flattered that you consider it more deserving attention.

Actually, "Get Funked" is very clever so that's an example of restrictions producing good stuff! "Get Fucked" wouldn't have been very clever at all.

Anyway, I am deeply enmeshed in the American criminal subculture. I watch a lot of crime flicks, I read a lot of crime fiction, and um, yeah. Obviously I'm not going to come out and say "and I commit a lot of crimes!" but you get the idea. One of the things that I think caused me to take your game maybe too seriously is that it engages with the subject of crime fairly knowledgeably: King Crimeson getting pinched for tax evasion, Ryuki's difficulty in "going straight" (no pun intended), some of the lingo was fairly accurate, the general depiction of violence and hand to hand combat, the way the game illustrated how the criminal underworld touches the worlds of subcultures, entertainment, and sport, etc. But I won't deny that I may have taken your game too seriously. There was definitely plenty of ridiculousness there, but it wasn't the ridiculousness that caught my eye and made me want to play it, it was the crime.

It's crucial that you understand, though, as an artist and developer, that I was in no way saying your GAME wasn't homophobic enough. I mentioned that some (I think two) of its characters weren't homophobic enough. This is a crucial distinction and I hope you can get your head around it and it takes the bad taste out of your mouth. Not that it should matter, but I'm not straight myself. In any sense of the word.

FWIW the review I submitted to the site (I think it's still in the queue?) was edited and contains a bit less discussion of homophobia/the homosex in general. I just didn't think to go back here and edit my "screw the queue here's the review" post. I'll edit that now so it matches the text of the official review.

Do your games have a continuity?

I want it. PM me.

Okay man, you asked for it. Brace yourself, but it'll probably take a while to compose so it might be a couple days. : )

What was the worst/funniest/most memorable moment you've had while someone else was playing your game?

Mine is really not a happy memory. My girlfriend at the time was playing one of my games and managed to find an embarassing bug that I was sure wasn't there--she had a knack for that actually and would have made an excellent tester for just that reason. Anyway, I got REALLY MAD (because I was embarrassed and had wanted to impress her) and we had an awful fight. Man I was an asshole back then.

Over the years, I have never not felt at least slightly annoyed when watching an LP of one of my games. There's always some piece of obvious text the LPer skips past that causes them to bitch about something later that the text explained perfectly and it's like GAH DUDE/DUDETTE you're PLAYING IT WRONG!!! Unlike the above experience which is from a dark period in my life that I'm through with, this is probably something I'll never completely get over.

and the bug reporting system itself had a bug, which caused it to crash the game if no bugs had been reported.

lmfao

The Best Battle Animations You've Seen?

I'm revisiting a real old project and remembering how much I used to obsess over creating cool sometimes overly elaborate battle animations at that age (nevermind that my mapping was shit and all my other graphics clashed). Then I got really lazy about battle animations around the time VX came out and used either the default ones in the editor or slight modifications of them whenever possible. Now I'm kind of getting into it again, in part due to being able to cherry pick from the like 180 or something excellent animations made by (I think) lexusx.

surprised this has not been brought up yet but man this topic title is way way way way way way way way way way too vague.

It was fun to get back into doing reviews. These events seem to be like the only things that actually encourage me to play stuff on the site.

Congrats to all winners and everyone else for all their efforts in writing reviews!

Excellent, then kentona's plan is working.

I got one review submitted for whiskey. We know what this coming week's booze is yet?

Okay, so the issue's with the Hallucthulhu hallucination but nothing in that event code should cause your character to get stuck off the screen...what map were you on, do you remember? Chances are it's a combination of different event code that's causing the problem, not any one thing. The game has a bunch of systems that were thrown together VERY quickly and the sanity effects were never even tested (although the rest of the game was, twice).

What are your favorite and least favorite parts of gam mak?

jeez, maybe i'm thinking of from 2k to 2k3 then?? I don't know. I definitely remember working in some version of the engine where I had to painstakingly determine how many frames it would take each character to complete their movement route by trial and error.

it has been sooooo long since i worked on anything in 2kX.

The Best Battle Animations You've Seen?

I think this is one aspect of graphics/visuals that I don't see get a lot of discussion because it's not as make-or-break as maps or sprites, but what are some of the best battle animations you've ever seen, whether in RM games or commercial games? (Although the focus is slightly bent towards RM games since this is in GD&D.)
