I first got interested in RPG Maker after watching X-Play do a review of RPG Maker for the Play Station. Years later I found RPG Maker VX Ace and decided to buy it. My first RPG Maker game, Dragon Lancer, was approved by Deckiller and became available to download on January 15, 2013.

Game / Engine Count:

RPG Maker VX Ace = 12
Visual Novel Maker = 3
RPG Maker MV = 2
Ren'Py = 2
Pixel Game Maker MV = 1
Solarus = 1
Inform 7 = 1

Adding fog and make it darker in RPG maker vx ace

To make it darker, you can do what I do.
Ignore everything in the events section and just use
the shade tool to shade the entire screen in.

If you want to have time in your game where it gets
lighter and darker by itself there are some pretty simple
scripts out there that do this too.

Interacting With Live Damage

If your you rpg maker vx ace you could try this (don't know
if this will work):

Set the enemy or event to appoach you or random, etc...
Then just put in an event where you lose HP when the event
touches you.
You could also probably put in some animation or sound, etc...
You will probably need to program some effect that will
ensure that you can't be constantly damaged though, force
the enemy or player away...

Please help me solve a mystery!

That isn't a very effective way of ranking your game.
I tried it, and my first game (released in mid January) outranks
my second game (released in late March.) My second game is obviously
better than my first, but my first has more downloads....
Why? Because my first game has been here longer.

But when I look at subscribers: I have 4 for my first and 10
for my second. So out of the people who downloaded my games
I can really tell how many really really liked it.

The way you have determined the value of your game is actually
not a true value of your games worth. How you feel about your
game and how it makes other people feel (usually you'll get
a comment or two) will tell you how valuable your game is.

Are my games the greatest? Absolutely not. There are tons of
wayyyy better games on here. Seriously a lot better. But that
doesn't get me down and I'm still a little proud of what I have
accomplished.

Please help me solve a mystery!

Just based on your title screen alone I would give your
game a passing glance. Presentation is important.

Even if your game sucks, if it has good presenation, people
will download it. And if your game is good and
has bad presentation then people won't know its good.

Advertising your game on other forums is easy. RMN has
pretty strict entry requirements, so you should be able
to post this on another page with what you already have.
I posted a page on the RPG Maker VX Ace forum, there
should be one for VX and XP too.

Also, how did you figure out how your game ranks?

Giadon Saga

You completed all 30 missions!!! Wow, that is impressive.
Some of the bonus dungeons were intentionally made difficult.
To be honest when I played through the game I thought it was
easy (maybe I played too much Final Fantasy or Zelda - old school ones.)

With Odin it really depended on what skills he was using.
The exile skill can sometimes be really cheap, but at level
68 it might have been a cake walk. You can repeat this battle
as many times as you want. If he manages to exile all three
party members and kill Da-Zar it can be game over very quickly.

Thank you for enjoying the game. Progress on my next
game is going well, with about 30 minutes of gameplay
so far.

So you want to be a game developer?

I disagree about making your first game a big game.
A lot of people making their first game have never
used RPG Maker. I think having a direction is good:
have a story, have a couple things you want to achieve,
and find out what you need to learn to do it.

KISS (Keep is simple stupid, as the expression says.)

I think if you try to add too much to your game
(ie. in terms of resouces, scripts, or complicated ideas)
The program will get overwhelming. Your first project should
use the default engine so that you know how to use it.
And every project after that can get bigger and better.

Finishing your project is important and its easier to do if you
have something that isn't a 30 hour epic final fantasy clone (for example.)

For me my motivation game from the story and the characters I
was making. I didn't need to have the flashiest game out there.
If I thought my characters and story were interesting then I
was motivated to move forward. And sometimes when I thought
my story needed something extra I made one character really interesting.
My original plan for a character in Giadon Saga was not how
she turned out later. When I wanted to make her more interesting
the story became better as a result. Perhaps I'm just too
easily motivated...

New Save File Available

I had considered adding these scripts:

CSCA Core Script version: 1.0.5, Created by: Casper Gaming
CSCA Difficulty System version: 1.0.3, Created by: Casper Gaming

(Which I will be using in my new game.)

These allow players to choose the difficulty they want.
That way people who felt the game was too difficult
could choose an easier setting, which will auto lower
enemy stats. This could also allow players who felt the
game was too easy to raise the difficulty. I have also found
a way to use this in New Game + so that you can choose a new
difficulty when you complete the game.

I decided to leave Giadon Saga alone for now in fear that
a script like this could ruin or change the game too much.

Creating a save file was easy, its doesn't change the game,
and its simple to use. And you don't have to use it if you
don't want to.

Giadon Saga

My next game aims to be bigger and better than the last.
Based on current production I'm expecting a release
sometime between November 2013 - January 2014.
But I don't want to rush it. My goal is to
one day get one of my games featured on RMN.
Hopefully my next game is good enough. Here's a screen
shot of an area I'm working on. Any thoughts?

Edit: For those who find Giadon Saga too difficult I have
created a special save file (available in my locker.)
Only use this if you have become completely overwhelmed
with the game's difficulty.

Giadon Saga

Not everygame can be everything to everyone.
I'm not here to make everyone happy.
If just one person likes this game then I
have achieved my goal.
If just one person hates this game then I
have achieved my goal.
And as long as no one is indifferent about the game,
it will be at least be remembered for something.

Some people will like this game, a lot of people
will hate this game, and some people will come here
to post about how much this game sucks.

My advice:
Right click, delete, empty recycle bin....
