RMN3 is alive again

RMN3 is alive again. Please discuss cool and innovative ideas. 8)What a glorious first day of April.

MadWorld

I just picked this up on my way from the dentist to work this morning.

http://www.sega.com/madworld/

I haven't played it yet BUT will be giving my impressions later tonight.

ika developments

There are just my thoughts on ika and my ideas behind it.

Guidelines
ika games should never require Python to be installed on the system.

You do not have to install ika to play ika games; only develop them.

ika Installation
ika will come with the "ika game library" (IGL), a package of scripts to fulfill most generic aspects of game engines.

ika will come with iked, the ika editor, which includes specific tools to develop your ika game.

ika Game Library
Written entirely in Python.

IGL can be updated and will be maintained with ika itself.

IGL will contain multiple subpackages dealing with certain genres of games, such as:
RPGs
Platformers
Shooters

The different genre engines inside IGL will come with premade ikaDB models.

I imagine the directory structure of IGL will be something similar to this:
igl/
db/
formats/
genres/
rpg/
platform/
shooter/
utils/

ika will continue to provide heavy lifting for audio and video.

ika Game Distribution
iked will contain a specific "Distribute" tool that will deal with the task of packaging your game to be distributed.

ika is a cross-platform engine. iked packaged games will contain all the game files, a Windows binary and a copy of the developer's current IGL package. Due to the nature of linux libraries, I don't know an easy method for Linux distribution.

Upcoming Site Update

On Wednesday, the site is going to be down from about 7:30 PM Eastern time until sometime I don't know that night. It will be going down while we update the website code and make some updates on the server itself. This is to get the site running on Django 1.0 which should alleviate most of the frustrating text encoding issues on the site. You know these by what frequently shuts sections of the site down.

After the update, there will probably be some bugs. If you encounter one, please check back with this thread and post about it if it hasn't already been stated.

Thank you and have a nice day. No, it isn't RMN3.

Effective Soon: Forums Being Removed

Effective sometime later this week, the following forums are going to be deleted:

General Discussion
Moronic Stuff

The following forums are probably going to be deleted as well:

Introduction Forum

Reasonings behind the forum changes are to bring them more inline with the site's purpose: game development.

Big Deal: Why are there so few game reviews?

Last night I switched game ratings back to being based on reviews and noticed something terrible.

There are only about 220 reviews, while there are over 900 submitted games. What's the big deal? People always want to have others tell them what they thought about their game, but don't seem to want to do the same for other people.

I find this to be a big issue. I excuse myself because I haven't ever made a real game and have to code this site and actual game engines. Yeah it's kind of "holier than thou" but I'm sticking to it!

So is there something we can do to help out people to review games?

RMN3 Changes (EVERYONE READ)

RMN3

I've talked a long time about RMN3 and what it fixes and so forth. This is the post that explains what you should be seeing in a month's time.

The big reveal: the Game Release forum is being deleted in its entirety. Review threads, advertising threads, and tutorials/articles will no longer be allowed on the forums.

Now that you have read that, you are probably wondering why. It'll be hard to explain. Users will lose the ability to create immediate threads about their game. What they gain out of this, however, is far more.

  • Custom pages for your game to show any information that pertains to your game. As an example, you can create a special characters page that lists all your game characters with bios and images. Each custom page has a special URL for it to easily link to.
  • Customization of your game page. You will be able to customize the look of all the pages for your game. That includes your blog, image gallery, download page, and custom pages.
  • Manage the people on your game team. You will be able to give other people access to your game.
  • Game testers are also part of the game team. You will be able to add testers to your game. You will be able to mark special downloads for your game as "tester versions" and they will be able to see these.
  • Faster and simpler tools to manage your game. The control panel has been redone to be faster and give you all game access in a single place.

Now you are thinking, "Oh that's great, but now my game will be lost with the other thousand games on the site". And that would be accurate. It would get lost very quickly.

The game list has been redone to "bump" the most recently updated games to the top, working like a forum topic in that regard. To update your game, you simply add content to it. A new image, video, download, or blog post will bump your game. Active games will naturally float to the top of the list.

As well as that, game subscriptions are back and actually work this time around. When you subscribe to a game, you will automatically be notified when they are updated. You can customize your subscriptions to denote what updates you want to be informed about: images, reviews, etc.

The purpose behind these changes, is to get games back as the center of attention. A forum post is easily lost. If you find a person's game on RMN3, you will have every possible bit of information posted on it.

It is a large risk removing the one forum that typically defines these community sites. But myself and the other RMN admins feel that this is the way things should be done. I am very excited for RMN3 to come out, because I feel it is a way to progress the community into something better.

There are still some other things in RMN3 that aren't related to this. Later this month, I'll detail everything.

RMN3 has been canceled.
