Nintendo Channel

The Nintendo Channel is now available for us lucky US Wii owners. Make sure your Wii is updated and download the channel from the Wii Shop.

I just downloaded it and downloaded the Ninja Gaiden DS demo to my DS. Worked perfectly and the game seems very very cool.

DISCUSS: NPCs

Trying to start some more actual design discussion around here.

What are your thoughts about NPCs in games? There have been recent advancements in NPC "technology" with the likes of BioWare's KoToR and Mass Effect. I know in a lot of RPGs I've played, some games I want to talk to people and others I don't. Usually if I am very enthralled with the game and enjoy its world, I talk to more NPCs.

Do these highly interactive NPCs really matter to a game?

Screenshot Thread With One Eyebrow and a Golden Tooth

Okay the last topic finally got large enough.

I haven't worked on any games lately, so I don't have anything to show from myself. Here are some of the newest games on RMN:

Fewer Mechanics, Better Game (Gamasutra Article)

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3621/fewer_mechanics_better_game.php

I saw this on Kotaku and read the article. It basically tries to enforce the point that your game shouldn't be boggled down with superfluous mechanics. He gives some good examples, while others are kind of a stretch.

On the whole, I agree with him. My attitude is to find the main things you can do in your game, and polish them to brilliance. Mario can jump and run. That's his core ruleset and he does it REALLY damn well in all his games. But when you start overloading your game with mechanics, it bogs down the player.

User Question: bbcode tags

I am going to be extending the site's bbcode tag library and wanted to express some ideas I had about them.

One of which is pulling content from the game database with tags. So you would have the following types of tags:

: Gives a link to a game with the game's title shown.
: Gives a link to a game review with the game title and review score.
: Embeds an image with the screenshot name.
: Embeds a YouTube video.

Where the 1 is the ID of whatever you are referring to.

My question is, are there any other new tags users would want?

The Conduit (Wii FPS)

http://wii.ign.com/articles/867/867498p1.html

Apparently a smaller developer is making a "mature" Wii FPS called The Conduit. They are trying to load up the game full of crazy effects that most most Wii devs don't even know exist.

It's no 360, but it ain't bad. Check out the rest of the screenshots. The engine looks fairly competent, but the devs own artists are not amazing.

Anyways, I feel like the Wii has a serious lack of FPS titles for it. Metroid Prime 3 showed that you can do some AMAZINGLY kick ass controls for first-person games.

[DEAD] Metroid Origins/MTR

I just felt as though I should post a topic or something.

This is a Metroid fangame. I originally started work on it back in November of 2003 with my friends Hatchet, corey, and infey. We decided to remake Metroid 2 into something more like the modern Metroid games.

We were completely remaking the game from the ground. We kept the basic plot of the game and added in more non-obstructive details, as well as new areas.

We've tried to keep things going with it, but things always seemed to come up. Eventually, corey and I decided to stop working on it to pursue more original ideas and ones that wouldn't be under such heavy scrutiny.

Anyways, here is a link to the "official site" for MTR. It has music and a video.

Game Downloads fixed for site games

Thanks to Ephiam for pointing me in the right direction by saying you couldn't add downloads for new games.

Download adding should be working perfectly now. Sorry it took so long to address.

Update: I also made it so you are able to update your's game's main download. The main download shows up for the link on the various game listings.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The game is now out in the good 'ol USA (and that Canadian place north of it). I've unlocked 32/35 of the characters and I don't recall how many of the stages.

My Friend Code is 2320-5793-8568.
