What is magic? What does it mean? How does it work?

author=Kylaila
Beautifully said.
I couldn't agree more. Every point Sailerius hit was perfect. Not using our abilities for evil is a STRONG one. Lots of people who create media can use their passion for evil works.

Learning what is important and how to communicate in a way that isn't speech itself. I also liked how it was said that we have to put ourselves in the shoes of characters in their situations and sometimes, the shoes fit who we are in one way or another. No matter what kind of story you create, there will always be someone who can relate. With many lives comes many possibilities and experiences. This is all so much to take in.

Although, lots of good information has been dished out here in this thread, it seems there is actually more to learn than I thought. There are branches of the concept that have to be taken into account.Believe, me I'm taking lots and lots of notes on this. Not only that, but I passionately feel that this thread is helping others discover what it is as well and how to improve their experiences.

Also, I didn't know someone got banned in an earlier comment :( Just goes to show, you got to be careful what you say to others.

@Neversilent Yes, I am heavily enjoying the exchange here. It fills me with joy to come here and see that new posts are being made to help further define the word magic. I'm sure that I'm not the only one growing with this either. Some terms people have said struck me like lightning. I hadn't even thought of it on certain levels. And, no you aren't being over precise. Magic is a deep topic and its best that you go into as much detail as possible. Its not something that can be summarized in 3 words so to say.

[RMMV] My game is too hard, what do?

Ok, lets break this down into bits. Basically what you are saying is...

  • You feel that you have put lots of work into the game
  • People refuse to learn what to do and expect to win simply by attacking
  • You have no idea how to persuade people to the use the mechanics REQUIRED to win battles
  • You don't want to make the game easy

What you should know is that if you can win, so can everyone else. There is no particular reason to make the game child's play just to please those who can't beat certain battles.

For example, in Final Fantasy games, for certain bosses, they have a countdown mechanic for strong attacks. For Bahamut, he has an attack called "Giga Flare" that usually takes 3 rounds to charge up. By this time you SHOULD use common sense and prepare for that attack to hit.

Same thing applies here. In the nice screenshots you have provided, it is clear that you should know when to guard because it clearly says that someone is preparing for a "tremendous" hit or a "setback". It even says that a critical hit will happen on the next hit. What more could you need to know?

Are the players saying its hard simply because they aren't equipping the right stuff and are trying to "blaze" through the game or are they dying because they simply can't follow instructions? Do you have any examples of any feedback from the players? Perhaps a difficulty selection would be great.

By the way, what is the game called? I'd like to give it a shot.

Plus, I know how you feel because I have seen people play my game(s) and it couldn't have been clearer to know how to play, yet they don't seem to know how things work. Certain games are more complex than others and you can't just expect to pick up a game and know what's going on. You have to know the rules and what it takes to be successful in the game you are playing.

What is magic? What does it mean? How does it work?

This thread is full of so many funny, and very inspirational material. So far, I have saved several comments to a document to let them simmer for bit. And yes, to clear things up, I am talking about a magical experience that you have had in many works. Gaming, movies, books, music, all of it.

Though, it specifically is talking about story lines that you have experienced that you have considered magical. The recipe for "magic" is dependent on what you want to get out there as Kylaila and NeverSilent have already spoken into the atmosphere.

When watching certain movies like Howl's Moving Castle,Spirited Away, or Aladdin Or playing games like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy(6-10 comes to mind), I can't help but wonder what the word "magic" means in the sense. Based on what has been said here, it seems to be described as some sort of bonding that occurs between the media and the viewers. This bond usually occurs naturally as you view all aspects of the experience.

Everything in the experience plays a role in creating this delicious recipe that will keep people coming back for more. Every piece of it is an ingredient. They all work together to make events powerful. If a character dies, and somebody is playing rock music, its not going to be powerful compared to a song that makes you want to start bawling. I remember I cried when Alys died in Phantasy Star IV. The music was one of the saddest and still is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

Some users here keep talking about an "Ambient". I had no idea what the word meant until yesterday. An ambient is basically something that should match with something else. That indeed is an important piece.

In a nutshell, you all are helping me a great deal with this. Thank you all for complete honesty and flow of knowledge that was needed to gain a better understanding of what it means to create magic. I'll do my best.

What is magic? What does it mean? How does it work?

@Never Silent. This is a perfect answer! You hit many key points and struggles I have been having lately. Not only did you answer my question, but you went into depth of why and what really matters. When dealing with storytelling, there is a plethora of things that should interact with us on a physical level. Will it make us smile or laugh, will it make us cry or change how we see ourselves or the world around us?

Many questions linger in creative arts. I am going to save your comment and meditate on it for a day or two. This is actually just what was needed. And thank you for being honest:) Saying that magic doesn't exist, its simply created on how you portray things and if its powerful enough to grasp your overall interest the whole way through. Of course, there are less interesting segments here and there. But in the end, like you have said, we want to feel satisfied and come back for more. I believe this is why sequels and prequels are made.

If something has been released and it dwells in our hearts to a certain level and keeps us wondering what will happen next or if there will be more in the future. Of course, that all depends on tastes of the viewer.

Thank you so much for the well balanced and rock solid response. It has been a tremendous help.

@StarSkipp- lol, sorry to disappoint. I wouldn't know how it originated, but that would be an interesting topic.

@InfectionFiles- haha, nice rhyme.

What is magic? What does it mean? How does it work?

Hello RMN, I have been in deep thought about this and thought it was best to ask everyone this. What is magic to you? What does it mean? How does it work? No, I don't mean the stuff that you toss at your foes in games and stuff, but as an experience.

In RPGs, stories are very important regardless of what type of RPG it is. The characters and story have to blend well, otherwise it was all for naught. Is magic something that is unforgettable? Something that will remain in your heart for as long as you live and beyond? Is magic emotion? Does it have realism to relate to the real world? What are some key essentials to creating a magical experience without over complicating the plot?

It doesn't exactly have to be in an RPG, but what experiences have been magical to you? Some say, Disney, Nintendo, Square Enix, Studio Ghibli, and several others are the best places to search for it, but how exactly do you achieve it? I've played most Final Fantasy games, watched most Disney classics, and watched a majority of Studio Ghibli's films, yet the definition of "magic" is something that is hard to pull off without time.

The reason why I'm asking is because, I am starting to create the story for my project now that I know everything there is to know about the series. It took years of research and playthroughs of every game(sometimes several times) to find out everything about everything; the characters, the storyline, the chronology, the music, all of it. But, now that its time to put the story together, its a lot harder than I thought.

The game play or mapping isn't the problem, but since the story combines the whole chronology into one as well as adding a new one, bringing everyone together and figuring out how they meet is challenging. It would be a shame if the game was ruined by a story that doesn't fit the characters or atmosphere.I would greatly appreciate any help on this.

Its thanks to everyone that the game has made it this far, perhaps this will push even further.

In what ways have Games,Animes, or media in general changed you?

Wow! You really plan on going? The best of luck to you and may you fulfill your destiny. And yes, I've played OOT countless times, the same run every time. Now that I know everything about the game, I can play it just based on skill and not having hearts to back me up. No heart containers, not pieces of heart,no defense increases, zip.

I guess its a way of creating your own hard mode.

I'll work on it this week. I spent hours digging through everything to find bits and pieces of the design documents. Most likely a new set of archives will be up soon.

Not only did Lydia's design change in art, but if you take a brief look at this, you'll see how many times I had to redesign her in pixels. If often took going back and forth to do so. Also, now that I know how to change costumes in game, characters may get a 2nd costume after the main game is done.

I guess the thing was I was afraid to show my work because I though it was mediocre compared to what others can do, but I realized that it was an unwise decision to be so focused on others talent that I neglected my own. And thanks for your support, its comments like these that keep me pushing forward no matter how bleak things may seem.

Video games have pretty much changed me into who I am; an aspiring game developer.

The Great Deku Tree also taught me a valuable lesson.

Good news:) We all are here because we had dreams one day of making our dream projects. Also, what did the Tree teach you? Its been ages since I played OOT. My very last playthrough will be a 3 heart only challenge.

What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

@LockeZ

This is genius! Never thought about a character temporarily taking their place. Though, it would be cool to meet them similar to how Sora meets all these characters in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. He usually shows up at their best moments and shows what it would be like if characters interfered in fights that didn't belong to them. I stated this before, but it would have to be a team project more than anything. Similar to how people worked on Super Mario Galaxy, each person could develop a concept or world and we all collaborate on how to make them.

It could be a community project that is all made in one engine, but with all of our minds working together to come to the same conclusion. The person or group who knows the most about a certain World is in charge of developing that world. Also, what if we did something KH2 or Mario Party 2 style where the character changes outfits depending on what world they're in? Haha! I can see someone wearing overalls or a green garb or something.

Though, with the huge mix of worlds comes a huge mix of programming. Platformers, RPGs, Action games, Adventure games, Space Shooters, and a bunch of other genres. But, they would be to a very limited extent as we don't want to linger in one world for too long. Imagine being able to use fire flowers or materia. The possibilities are endless. Perhaps one day if this project comes to light, all of this could be documented for tweaking.

Love them all <3. I love your style :^D. Any chance of having small image cutscenes or something?

It brings me joy that you love my work:) Thank you so much bud. Sometimes I even wonder why I stopped drawing in 2014, but I plan on picking it back up again for the sake of future projects and concepts. And yes, I do have lots more to show besides what is shown here. This is only volume 1 of images. More are yet to come. Some have Bai in them as well and I know you'll be happy to see that.
