EXXXXXXXXXXXXXactly! Just how many HP does Cerberus have anyway? Its just a freaking game but this bugger manages to raise my blood pressure. I have good levels ( I think...30's and up ) but just when I think, hope, believe he HAS to be dead, he wipes out my entire party. Ive thrown everything including the kitchen sink at him but...ah hell you know what happens.

XD Before you go to fix that kitchen sink, follow this guide on beating him.
(You are on a pretty good level already, it's the strategy you have to worry about)

Cerberus has 28,500HP.
His MP is 999.
His attack is 125
His Spirit is 70
And his Agility is 100.
In other words he is a mean boss, but let's take him out quickly.

As soon as the battle starts, get Rueben to use Poison attack. If successful, Cerberus will be inflicted by poison which will quickly eat his health after each turn.
Heal when he uses fire attacks. Rueben's Flame armor reduces these attacks by half.
Use a remedy or Angel's Snack if he Paraylzes you. As soon as possible.
Don't bother attacking with Benjamin, you won't have time. Just heal on each turn.
Hopefully your Reuben will be at least level 36 so that you can use a new skill, Dual Attack. This will allow him to take two attacks in one turn. Keep doing that or a regular attack while healing with Benjamin and he will go down. If you feel brave, sneak a Holy in there as well, or even better, use a Blizzard scroll.

Honestly, this is what a remake should be like. Just for comparison sake, here's that scene (roughly :P) in the original game;

Yeah I know. This map was one of the first I mapped and wasn't my best, I'm going over it. XD
But as you will find the majority of the other maps are as close as they can get to MQ. :P

Thanks to sabin1981's feedback, I'm submitting a few programs known to be incompatible with mystic quest:

XFire
Fraps
MSI Afterburner

Close these programs down before running mystic quest.

i5-2500k/4.5Ghz, 8GB DDR3, GTX570, Win7-x64 -- as for programs? Mostly the usual; Chrome, Skype, Live Messenger, Steam, Microsoft Security Essentials, uTorrent, etc etc. Plus dozens of standard Windows services. I checked the techreadme and it made mention of a debugger, but as far as I know I don't have any debuggers running - I've no need of them.

Oh and the error is there even on base 1.2 install without patching.

Yikes. Sounds like a conflict, I have had this trouble myself before. *sigh*
Try shutting down all programs before starting the game, eg. anti-virus, browsers, etc (only if you are disconnected, of course). See if that works first.
If not.
Try applying a compatibility mode (I've had to do this with RPG maker before) either Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Vista mode and try again.
Sometimes launching the game multiple times in session fixes the problem.
And, make sure any RTP isn't on the system that you are trying to run it from, MQ doesn't like it because of the way it calls to the graphics in the scripts.
I am trying all possible ways to reproduce this error but I can't.
