Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

Yup, that's fine.
Hello, My name is Horrorbox, and I am currently searching for a game
to revive for this halloween challenge. I just have a few additional questions before I sign up and submit something:

1. Is there any point reviving a dead game that is almost finished?
2. Does it count if I trashed a game back a long time ago and want to restart fresh?

I would just like to know these things so I can start completely ready on the weekend.
Thank you.

I've decided it's time to finally pick Extinguished back up, the puzzle game that I originally started for the Swap in the Middle event but couldn't finish the first half of in time, then tried to complete by myself, and haven't worked on in at least 5 months now. This game is like a triple zombie at this point, but I still really want to finish it someday. So why not now?

I'll post my list of things to do as soon as I can.

Thanks for setting up this event, Liberty!
<only a tiny bit serious>I don't suppose you want to extend the deadline by a month so we can all also enter IGMC?</only a tiny bit serious>
I might consider it actually.
If Revivify runs into November then people get a chance to finish their IGMC games they never finished!

I don't think that would be in the spirit of the event.

I'll be showing myself out, now...

So, I'm having a tiny issue with Loop's Quest...

I...umm...

Shit, this is embarrassing.

I don't remember what the story was supposed to be.
XD

Oh, I know THAT feeling. If you can't remember what the story should have been, then maybe make a new one up? ;p
Think of it as a Swap the Middle With You game except you swapped it with your past self and now need to finish the game then! Don't let trivial things like forgetting the story stop you!
well I better do this so I don't need to bum lockerspace from kentona again...

So to try and ensure that I actually finish a game I'm just gonna go with the easiest option I have in my game list: Altima! It's been hovering in various states of "90% done" for a while now. Last time I tried to finish it I added more random shit like changing item caps, status healing items also giving immunity (and having to change it so you can't use them in menus for said immunity), and adding buff/debuff immunity.

So barring random new things to do there's still:
  • Enemies! I burnt out on these last time. I got them broken up into 6 tiers. Tiers 1-3 are done, 4 was done except the bosses, and 5-6 weren't done at all. Tier 5 is the endgame dungeons with the best notes of where the final dungeon is, tier 6 is basically the final dungeon. Half the fight is coming up with AI and movesets for them that aren't boring af and trying to balance them in an open world game where almost nothing stops the player from just picking up the best sword of the game.
  • The ending! Man Altima doesn't even have a story, there isn't anything to end. It's literally play some music, pan the camera or something, and show some credits. Just make THE END picture or something and show it in a neat way or something.
  • Balancing! This is where I crash my trike into a gutter. There's always balancing and I'm always playing with numbers or skill sets or gear. I'll probably have to consult my big spreadsheet of where gear is available again because I decided to add something else and I need to squeeze it in somewhere.
  • An opening? nah it'll just dump you on the world map and name input screen. I've tried adding plot to this game before and it always lead to a dumpster fire. There's even some traces of when I last tried it here and there so I'll just leave it in to add to the awkwardness. I don't even remember what it was for and I never wrote it down so w/e.
  • Debugging because oh god there's always so many dumb little bugs everywhere

the fact that I can't finish something simple like fucking altima just shows how horrible I am at game dev

e: and now I double posted, I was using preview to make sure I did the list bbcode right and when I finished I Just hit submit without thinking. Sorry!
Okay, so for this event I'm gonna pick Dreamaria (the game I made for the Gaymak the Rainbow event) back up. (It's been about a month since I touched it, so it should be fine.)

To do:
  • Finish the first scenario (including the "Lost Woods" type puzzle I was gonna include)
  • Start and finish other two scenarios (underwater and air pirates)
  • Pick out a scenario from the list I made when I started the game for the fourth; start and finish it
  • Do some touch up work on the dialogue in the hub
  • Come up with an ending of some sort
  • Other misc. tasks to be determined

I'm pretty sure I already have all the resources I need for the game, so I don't need to work on that so much.
MinST was created 2 years ago for the Halloween event. Back then it was using simple ASCII display. Feedback on it led me to use a graphic display library. It looked much better and I improved gameplay as well but I left it untouched for about a year. As it is far from finished, let's animate the dead!

Elements of life:
* Scrollable map: improve the game engine so it can play maps larger that the screen size
* Walls: Right now they are simple obstacles, as useful to the defender and attacker. I need to make them advantageous only to the defender, modify the tile mechanics and aesthetics so a defender can stand on top of them and have ladders to allow climbing only at specific places
* Siege: develop siege machinery, breakable gates and walls, moat
* Improve menu presentation
* Build a campaign

Ok, I explained what I wanted to do almost a year ago in this blog. Left Behind is technically a complete game. It has one game braking bug (you can get stuck in the wall in ice puzzle). I meant to remake it back in february and I already had a list of things to do. That one is lost I'm afraid.
It may look like a lot but it's actually a quite manageable load. The most consuming part should be battles and balancing them. I expect it to take about a week.

Logistics
  • Travel to our country house and get my hardrive
  • Install Windows or find a way to reliably run RM2k on Linux

Resources
  • New, less ugly faces
  • battlers
  • custom sounds
  • One or two original MIDI songs, which would work as themes
  • New title screen, Game Over Screen

Story
  • I need to rewrite it and give it a meaning. It's a story about love and dedication. I want it to picture the relation and characters better. The new version with be linear in order to destroy all lose parts.
  • Remaster should represent the world of Left Behind better, I'll add new weird characters (Blind Man, Gladiator) and enemies
  • I want to make some bits about Cerdic's identity and sexuality less awkward.

Gameplay
  • Add battles. I need to gain some experience with balancing and this an ideal opportunity. It means that I'll need to add meaningful items and character stats.
  • Battles will need enemies and maybe additional actors. I got ideas for companions: An one-eyed dod, a mute freed slave, an one-armed young valkyrie.
  • Make the game bigger. The overlord should have at least 10 maps (I don't count interiors) with some early battles and quests. It shouldn't let you enter the underground unprepared. Once you enter, you can't die. You still need to poison yourself to enter. Lost battles take time from your timi limit. If you're too slow you lose.
  • The underground should include both puzzles (more of them0 and battles). I'll try to make it look more unified with the overlord and use green and grey as dominant colors everywhere. This might be reverted back.
  • teleports, so you can move around faster as the game won't be so linear.
  • More content

Gamepage
  • New screenshots to represent the remaster properly.
  • Change graphics (Cedric's face, Game's logo) to new better versions.
  • Update it regularly with progress blogs
  • Get a decent review, so the game has 3 stars
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well I imported some enemy graphics that I actually paid someone to make me two years ago and then never used. Modified one of them to make a similar enemy with a different weapon. Actually created those enemies and started giving them skills.

And then I was like, "Hey, a Countdown type skill would fit really well for these enemies." So I started creating a script to do that. Can't even create one fucking enemy without causing feature creep.

I remember now why this game was taking so long to get anywhere.
If anyone would like to have a music composer or mapper I would love to join your team.
