Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

Update #2

Summary
Pandora's Present DX is a 'complete' version of my Game Chill 2013 game with added content that had to be cut in order to...not make the deadline anyway. ^__^;
The story is about Dora opening Pandora's Present on Christmas, which unleashes terrible demons upon the world. It's up to her and her friends to save Christmas!
Now with more content! There'll be 3-4 bosses instead of one and more areas, items, enemies, all new graphics and more!

Some clarification: I'm not upgrading my Game Chill game, I'm reviving the DX version I last worked on this January.

Comparison
Some test map with the old and new graphics. The most notable changes are the softer color palette and the fatter characters. Really didn't like how little space the old ones filled.

OLD

NEW

I like these updates, since it motivates me to continuously work on my game (or at least do something before the update deadline runs out :P), as well as keep up with everyone else's games.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I posted an old/new comparison already but not a description.

Iniquity and Vindication is a game about walking up to a giant three story tall shark wearing sunglasses named Duke Dorsillicus von Killershades XXVII, and punching it to death.

I mean, that happens five minutes into the game, so I guess technically it's not what the ENTIRE game is about. There's a bunch of stuff about paranormal research and mystical artifacts, and an evil dictatorshop formed out of the ashes of the Soviet Union after it dissolved. But I feel like the shark-punching thing is really the best possible summary.

Plot

In the little city where Helya lives a serial killer is in circulation. Many kids and teenagers are recently disappearing. The police connects the disappeared kids with the killer but they're not sure yet. Parents are scared to let their kids out alone. One day, a transfer student comes to Helya's school...

Graphics

For the graphics I can't show you anything 'cause my computer is currently broken T-T
Progress update:
I tested the scrollable map feature extensively and found some bugs. I managed to fix most of them but the remaining one directly points to the engine architecture. I'm refactoring the code to deal with it and make the code easier to adapt to future changes.
@Delsin: I was about to be like "your game was originally a ROM hack?" but then I remembered console RMs exist :v

Gah, why am I sitting here overthinking significant additions and redesigns to what I have coded or planned. Need to quit that shit. If anything, I should probably be considering removing a few more things.

hahaa I spent the week adding and changing shit anyways

PROGRESS UPDATE #2 GO

Summary: idk what the plot is. I think before it was something about "Kiki the TimeCop" chasing down and arresting an evil crystal ball, but now it's about some DBZ-Wizard-looking motherfucker pewpewing shit b/c reasons I guess.
The important part is that it's a shmup with two main features besides shooting: a manual-use shield (think Eschatos or Giga Wing etc, to an extent) and the ability to choose whether to face left or right (think Deathsmiles or Trouble Shooter etc).

Images:
WARNING, TWO MASSIVE GIFS ARE APPROACHING FAST
Please excuse the clusterfuck test stage design and general complete lack of balance you are about to see

Old

Background stand-in graphic is stolen from Sutte Hakkun
Old scoring system had every not-1HP enemy producing a medal that bounced around while increasing in size and value. Quite frankly, it's too many damn Medals.

New

The Medal stand-in graphics are stolen from Armed Police Batrider
Player character sprite has been changed, both b/c of the plot change, and also to have something smaller and less awkwardly long than the original. This way, the hitbox (which is just the Heart) is a bit more proportionate to the sprite. However, atm, there's only that one sprite.
A lot of mechanics have been changed, but the Kamehameha complete with Beam Dueling system is the most obvious. Different enemies also now produce different classes of Medal with their own base value, though the bouncing/growing mechanic remains.

I like how for all the new/changed systems I started typing out a plan for what I was going to do, but then ignored it in favor of just hacking things in at random. This game gonna turn out gr8, gaiz. Won't be no bugs at all nope.

Comparisons:
I want to show differences between one area in the map, but I don't know how.
How do upload a screenshot, or place it into an image URL?
*I'm confused*

Update #1- The game I picked was a game that I actually had re-submitted right before this event started, Dragon Quest The Dragon Lord Chronicles, perfect timing! I pretty much named off everything I'm changing and fixing on the game page itself.

https://rpgmaker.net/games/8725/

Update #2- The plot is a group of cultists is trying to resurrect the dragon lord, and its up to you to pick and name a class and set out to find and stop them. Along the way recruiting anyone to join your party. Some characters include Borya, Alena, Psaro, Kiryl, Meena, and Torneko from the Dragon Quest series which can be recruited to your party.

As for old images I can't really post anything because there all gone, but I do have a new image I can share.

There's no way in hell I can get this project done by the end of the month, but this event actually motivates me to work on it way more.

Also Horror Box, here's how to do it, upload an image to your locker, once its uploaded it will have a file path right above it, copy and past that into the Image Url when it pops up, and there you go.

*EDIT* I love the achievements for this event.
author=HorrorBox
How do upload a screenshot, or place it into an image URL?
*I'm confused*

The easiest way to do it in this case is to just upload the images to your Locker. You can get to it from a tab on your user profile page if you haven't used this site feature before.
Then when you're making a post you can insert the image(s) by just clicking on the locker icon to the left of the normal image icon up in the post toolbar.

thx guys :) Hopefully it actually turns out like that and not a broken mess lol
The GIF actually took a few takes b/c I kept failing the beam duel due to it taking Mario-Party-level mashing with the current settings. Between that mechanic and all the other shit it's gonna be... something else actually trying to balance this game.

Comparisons:
I'm not very good with graphics so I'm trying to change major parts of the map, and place stuff where it should be, put more stuff everywhere there's space. This is because I didn't have a lot to show before, and so I'm adding new stuff to fix it.
OLD

NEW

Also thank you LonestarLuigi and TurkeyDawg you guys are awesome
So, I've finally did SOMETHING with my game last night!
...and it was mostly slight fixes and debugging in chapter 5.5.

Chapter 5.5 in Jello and the Valley of Duh is unique in that it is an Ace Attorney rip-off chapter, where you must help Kirby (now Lawyer Kirby, thanks to the Lawyer's toupee he inhaled), clear the name of his friend's long lost brother who was wrongfully accused of murder in the one town almost entirely occupied by humans.

Much of the gameplay in this chapter involves walking around town, looking for evidence and witnesses to build your case. There is also a relatively decently-sized courtroom section, with a fully evented cross-examination system, where the player must help Lawyer Kirby press statements in testimonies and present evidence to reveal contradictions.

This case was built around 2009, and it's meant to apply what I had learned in my high school government class about the american criminal justice system, contrasted against the psuedo-future japanese criminal justice system featured in the Ace Attorney series.
It is also a statement upon what pokemon-human relations/attitudes are like in that setting. In short: at best, pokemon are treated like second-class citizens when in human society. Kirby, being a "weird alien" in this world, is assumed to also be a pokemon by the humans.

As far as changes go, most of them were quite minor. Here's some of them:

This tileset uses an older version of the simplified wall tiles. It also doesn't have any of the roof tiles from the others. This was a relatively easy fix, thankfully.

Old lab

New lab

Also, the judge, Ms. Floppet, has gotten a new faceset picture to replace the rtp bluehair edgelord picture. Replacing every instance of that face... let's just say it took a while.

So many pages......

As far as it goes so far, I'm going to try and debug as I catch my save file up to chapter seven, and then maybe HOPEFULLY start creating some new content.

To-do list:

-make sprites for Chochuo
-make sprites for Gardevous
-place the librarian in the library
-make some more bookcase flavor text in town
This weekend was polishing stuff weekend despite still having content to do! Key things include:

1) After reviewing what status effects the player can inflict I updated the scan window to only show these. Y'know, a common sense fix.

2) The scan script puts an icon next to buffed/debuffed stats, except they weren't set to the correct icon. A buff was a mirror for example, another sensible bug fix right?

3) Since enemy MP is now internal only so I had to remove it from the scan window. There's no consistency of what MP does now besides whatever bludgeon I try to use to form enemy AI.

4) You know what bosses need? BIGGER LIFE BARS!

5) You know what I hate about the gauges? The gradient is drawn so that the right color is always drawn at the end of the gauge. So if HP is 50% and the gradient is red to yellow the gauge will always be fully yellow even if it only takes up half the full HP gauge. I changed it so the second color of the gradient always appear on the right when the gauge is full.

6) I also changed the HP and MP gauge colors. They are no longer default! HP goes Red/Yellow and MP is now two shades of purple.

7) Blind is too good. It started as VX's 1/4 hit rate, I changed it to 1/2, now it is 2/3rds. I'll make more enemies vulnerable to it too but it should help the Sentinel tank.

8) panic attack thinking I broke the hit algorithm again. Turns out I had a custom hit script sitting around and one enemy I was testing it on ??? ago. Whew!

9) Some traces of adding an intro. I think it'll just be a basic Enter Name, ??? Effect, Player Drops Into World.

here's some compare screens since I cheated out of it last time:

The old HP gauges. Yanfly default and the bright end of the HP gauge will always be at the end of the current HP. Bleh.

NEW AND SEXY gauges! Boss gets a bigger one, and the gradient is now baked in place. See the scans for the full color:

Old scan window featuring a bunch of status the player can't inflict and a MP gauge that could mean anything.

NEW AND SEXY scan! Featuring full HP gauge color. Actually when I first put it together I realized the number of status the player can inflict was tiny. KO, poison, blind, 4 debuffs, and buff immunity. Maybe I should add stun and make it so the enemy gains immunity to it for X turns.

DIGITAL IDENTITY CRISIS

So,
I wanted to work on Left Behind during last weekend, but I ended up painting.
My game is about nothing in particular. Like any professional newbie, I make it up as I go along and add stuff in randomly. The summary is as follows: you wake up with a horrible disease known as protagonist's amnesia (not mentioned in game) and you wake up in a strangers house. From there you can go anywhere you want, but this being a begginner JRPG there's only one place to go. You can hang out around the RTP town and do stuff like shopping, except you start out as a penniless peasant with naught a cent to your name. So really the only thing you can do is leave the starter town and start fighting enemies, but guess what, you are stark naked and have 1's across your entire character sheet. So all you can do is walk back and forth punching pigeons with your bare hands. Sounds like the best RPG ever, amirite? Now I know your just itching to see the screenshots of this supergame but I regret to inform you that I'm writing this on an iPad And I don't have the game files with me. The End.

Stay tuned for the next update to this super Gam

Progress Update #3
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Got all the previous maps added to the project.
Fixed all the teleports that were broken.
Found and fixed the graphical errors on the maps that came about from losing the original Tile E file, by splicing a new one together and editing maps.
Passability issues due to map issues now fixed.
Added the database information into the new project.
Fixed some broken chests and events that came about from the change to a new project.
Renamed switches and variables for ease of use.
Fixed some picture issues that were messing up the visual aspects of the map.
Fixed a script issue that caused some lighting issues.
Edited an event to stop it being randomised.
Balanced some enemy skills and weapon skill issues.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
I didn't realise that the teleports were going to break so badly, since I actually copy/pasted the maps in the right order. I also didn't expect one of my scripts to break the lighting, nor that one of the randomised events would send the player into a wall.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
I'm honestly not sure. I've got one dungeon and a half done, but it's supposed to be a short game. That said, the story still needs a bit of tidy up and finishing (some parts for the ending are a bit up in the air. I need to tie them together) and I added systems that are better for a longer game or at least a game with more choices available and while I could remove those I don't want to so I'll have to figure out how to give more choices for the player so they can ultimately build a character in a short game.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Maybe. Not sure. It'll likely be close, if I do.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Just getting shit done, really. I've got at least another dungeon to map, a lot of events to event and story shit to sort out.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Maybe an ear to see if the story idea I have will round out well? Maybe.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Maybe.
3rd Update

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Still in the brainstorm phase, unfortunately. When the deadline was extended, I slowed down a little. I'll be sure to have all the planning done by this weekend though.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
There are a lot more 'regulars' on RMN than I thought. Way more than anticipated. I'm not going to be able to throw an equal amount of bones at everybody.
Animating the last boss was a challenge due to engine limitations too. Part of his body's going to be the background. It'll look kind of funny when he dies.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
35%
If the previous event where I originally made this is any indicator, then I can pump out maps and events very quickly. I just need to get all my ducks in rows first.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Yup.
As long as IRL doesn't make sudden demands of me, anyway.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Class caps. I can only have 150 individual classes in the database.
Also map event caps for the world map. I can only have 99 at any time, and I suspect I'll be doing a little jury rigging to work around it.
Not that any of this means anything to anybody. I'm the only one who uses this dumb engine >.>

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Nah. I'm sure things will work out in the end.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Apart from asking people for ideas and community related input, there's not much assistance that can be offered. LockeZ did point me to a decent fire sword sprite, which was nice.
