Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

MinSTwas created 2 years ago for the Halloween event. Back then it was using simple ASCII display. Feedback on it led me to use a graphic display library. It looked much better and I improved gameplay as well but I left it untouched for about a year. As it is far from finished, let's animate the dead!

Shweet!
Today instead of working on content I added more new features! Like void shields (state that makes its subject immune to damage, excluding DoTs, and each attack knocks off one shield. Does not fade with time)! And states that influence recovery rates (fukkin' VX man, but also doesn't affect HoT)!

At least it'll be used to make new content
Just letting you guys know that the new end date is the 25/26th of November (will depend on your timezone so make sure your hourly offset has been added to your account settings!)

Enjoy the extra time~ ;p
Oh boy, more time for me to procrastinate!

Yay!!! Time for the IGMC!

By the way Libby, I think you actually shortened the time limit. Look at your times. Instead of ending Oct. 30, it now ends Oct. 26.

Wait, this is a 2 month event now? Hm...

You know, I threw together a prototype of an idea out of boredom a few months ago, and is more design document than an actual game. Would that qualify as a dead project?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you made a map or opened the database before quitting, then I'd call it a game that got born and then died. But if it was ONLY ever a design document, then personally I'd think no. It doesn't count as killing your baby if you never actually got past foreplay.

Definitely opened the database and made a map to make sure the idea was working correctly, so I guess I'm in the clear. Though seeing as this was originally intended to just get the idea down to work on later, this is less a baby and more frozen sperm.

Well, I'll play around with it until someone stops me.
I mean, that's not too different from what I'm doing. I asked about it back on page 2, and Liberty seemed okay with it.
Yay now we can do IGMC and this, thanks Libby (and anyone else involved in the decision).

Here's my list of work to do for my game. I'll probably run into at least a dozen more things I need to take care of while working on the game, but these should be the most important points for now.

Game: Extinguished

To Do:
- Refamiliarise myself with the eventing for the basic puzzle mechanics.
- Develop and implement the mechanics for those remaining puzzle elements that are not in the game yet.
- Create a better-looking bit of text for the title screen map (optional).
- Critically examine the writing and direction of the prologue scene and make changes where needed (optional).
- Rework the visuals of the menus to be more consistent and less wobbly.
- Map out the areas for the puzzles and the few non-puzzle rooms in between.
- Design the actual puzzles, starting with the first floor.

The last point is what's going to be the hardest, but at least all mechanics I need for the first floor are already finished. I just have to put them together like building blocks to make the actual "levels" now.
Music I've already got, and I'm not doing much in the way of custom graphics, so those parts aren't going to be much of an issue. Also, since unlike most of my other projects, this game has very little dialogue apart from the prologue, technically all the writing is already done. Yay!
ahaha holy shit I went diving into my backup drive and found my Klik n Play platformer project from fucking 2004, in addition to my stash of ancient music shit I did back then

Oh man, that's tempting, but I never figured out how to get the program to do much, and wasn't smart enough to make design documents back then, so there honestly isn't much to go on + I should probably stick to a project that doesn't have "hot garbage" as its base

That being said, there should totally be a variation of this event sometime where we try to dredge up the oldest shit possible

e: though, since we have an extra month now, I am somewhat considering switching to my RMN 10th game or this one old shmup project I posted about several years ago, rather than the current project
I remember my first game but I hope I never find a copy, I'm just glad at 14 (maybe 15) I had the sense to not put it online. The idea of re-making the oldest thing we have might be interesting though.

Okay, yeah, last minute project change here in light of the extended deadline

Project: A shmup project with no title outside of its filename of "ScrollTest", last worked on in 2015

What Needs to be Done:
Graphics and program for the stages. The document has 5 stages planned, which might be too much for two months, but who knows what I might get done if I keep shit simple enough.
I won't have time for original music. Probably just grab some CyberRainforce stuff or smth

What's Already Done:
o Some of the graphics: namely the player, some HUD elements, some bullets, etc
o The engine: Control, scoring, scene management, highscore entry, a functioning test stage, etc etc. It just needs the actual stages, really.

What Will Be Changed:
o The current scoring system has literally every enemy producing Medals (point items) with their own point value, which turns the screen into a clusterfuck. This will be changed so that only bigger enemies drop medals, and the points that the popcorn enemies would've dropped are instead transferred into the Medal-value for the larger enemies.

o The dynamic-difficulty system is a bit whack and might be axed

o There is a shield system, but it's OP af. Namely, I need to remove the ability to create homing lasers by bringing up the shield when a bullet is really close (sort of a "bullet catch" system). Turns out that's actually not even remotely hard to do, so...

o The other two characters will probably be removed.
o I might need to rework the player sprites, depending on what the new graphics I make end up looking like
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Spent all day replacing placeholder ripped tiles with original tiles instead of making new content. This is probably not the best way to get the game done by the end of the month. Or even to get the game to a point where I can show off visible progress.

But hey! Not so visible progress!

Old tileset:

New, suspiciously similar tileset:

Still need to redo the conveyor belts and one or two little things, then I'll have legal rights to actually use all the graphics in... this particular map.

The massive number of rips in this game and my inability to sell the finished product when I'm done was definitely a major contributing factor to my losing motivation to work on this game. The gameplay was so good; it deserved to be a real game and not just a shitty collection of Tales of Phantasia rips.
