[Poll] Metroid Prime 4 To Open World or Not to Open World that is the question

You realize if you take out the compass and the QTEs, you've basically got Super Metroid, yeah?

What's an open world Metroid game look like? Basically, exactly what has already been made, just with fewer walls and linear paths. Sounds fine to me.

[RM2K3] Can't seem to import sprites and I don't know why

There's something about Gimp that does some sort of... unusual thing with indexing.

It's when you have too few colors. If you make it RGB, then use a paintbrush or something to add in a bunch more colors (like a large, soft brush), index that and then delete the extra colors, it will work.

Edit: This comment originally contained spoilers for the epilogue when I wasn't planning to make one, but now that I have, I've edited out the info.

I'll just say that Ara Fell used mostly rm2k3 RTP. It was mentioned in 2 reviews that nobody paid attention to, and once in a Steam review. I doubt it's worth putting much effort into.

That being said, with R3P, I intend to do 100% non-RTP SFX. But for a game with relatively low production values, I really don't think you need to worry. Hardly anyone will notice or care.

I do think RTP will keep you from going viral. But, despite its popularity, I doubt Hero's Realm is a viral game.

[RM2K3] hi all i nedd help with something

Female protagonist games with excellent writing/story?

It feels awkward recommending my own stuff in a thread asking for excellent writing, but if you haven't already played it, Ara Fell did get a lot of praise for that aspect, and Lita used to be one of the more famous RM* female protagonists back in the day.

[RM2K3] Need help with vehicle 2

No, but just follow these steps.

Create a common event, set it to parallel processing, then make a wait command for 0 seconds (this will cause the process to wait a single frame before loop, reducing lag).

1) Create a conditional branch.

2) Go to page 2, select the "vehicle ___ is driven" radio button, then select the vehicle you're working with.

3) Select the "set handling when conditions do not apply" checkbox.

4) In the Condition Branch part, set the vehicle's graphic to the version where the character is riding in it.

5) In the Else part, set the vehicle's graphic to the version where the character is not riding in it.

The logic here is simple and the conditional branch, written in English, looks like this:

"If player is in boat, then set the boat's graphic to characterInBoat.png. Otherwise, set the boat's graphic to emptyBoat.png"

Now, again, I seem to recall there being some weirdness with this simple code that I had to work around in Ara Fell, but this basic idea should do it.

[RM2K3] Need help with vehicle 2

I seem to recall there being some small problem with what I'm about to suggest... but the basics would be to have a parallel process running (likely a common event) that constantly checks to see if you're in a boat or not.

On the second page, you'll see Vehicle _____ is driven. Select that with an else case.

If driven, set vehicle graphic to the manned version. If not, set vehicle graphic to empty.

Make sure to put a wait 0.0 somewhere in there or it'll lag.

How to properly kill off a minor character

"And I want to kill him, but how?"

This mindset is a mistake. Does the story call for killing him? Saying "I want so and so to die, let's build a story around it" is a really poor way of crafting a story.

What do you mean by "how" in this context? Like... how did he die? Murder? Car accident? Beheaded? None of that solves your problem.

Do you mean, how to handle it from a narrative perspective? Are you just having trouble writing a cutscene that fits?

Put the character in a dangerous situation that fits with the story. Kill the character. Think about what people would really do and how they would really react in that situation. Figure out a way to give them closure (resolve to avenge them? funeral? accepting their fate?)

It really is that simple. Just asking yourself, "how would real people react in this situation" will solve most of your issues.

@Craze Zedotagger did the composition, Caladium cleaned it up and added detail. More can be changed, for sure. Any suggestions on how to improve the depth? I'm not seeing the problem myself.

My thinking is that their brightness doesn't make sense for how dark the surroundings are. A way to improve that might be making a lightning flash happening right then, with long shadows behind the characters, but that's a lot of work for something that, I'd argue, does make sense; just imperfectly.

But again, maybe you're seeing something I'm not, and I'm totally open to more criticism here.

This is going to be one of our showcase pieces once we officially announce Rise of the Third Power, so I want it to be good!
