Is Kaizo the new trendy word these days?

Back in my day it was Kaibosh... or something, and it meant something different.

HAUS's General Art Thread

This is goooood shit!

Particularly of note is your attention to detail. Your environments are particularly inspiring.

Love this character, by the way.

It's not like this thread is at all redeemable now, the OP from what I can tell, has entirely left, and if not his recent posts have just been 'wow guys now you're talking about this?'.
Do refer to WetMatos by her preferred pronoun, please. Thank you.
I hadn't read the OP much because I couldn't stop laughing when I realized what the topic was about, but apologies WetMattos.

Do please spell her name out correctly, could you do that?

From here on you're on your own kids.

Dealing with death as a plot point?

LockeZ's soul trade thing made me think, what if the object to restore your dead buddies to life was an inanimate object

LIKE OH SHIT WALLY DIED BETTER MAKE HIM AN ANIMATED CHAIR

Like, you can just pick up random crap from around the map and change your party members appearance based on that object, NPC's will obviously be given more pity than ignorance, then. You could even have flavor text on corpses that says "No, we aren't turning the Janitor into a Broom, we aren't Fantasia!... or, I don't think we are! Order number one from your supreme Hatrack overlord, ask our writing staff if we're fantasia or at least inspired by it." or something.

God this idea is dynamite, I'm actually gonna implement this in Release (a game's name that is definitely a placeholder, not a game release) for the Young fella Wizard recruits and wants to keep alive. Wizard dies its game over, and in battle I plan for him to be pretty lazy and like 'whatever dad' and just do whatever until Wally or w/e the player calls him ends up at like 25% health then he's like "alright this one might be a bit tough for you on your own and joins in."

Thanks LockeZ you've given me a Jimmy Neutron Worthy Brain Blast here.

Obviously, that might incentivize players to cheez it, but maybe I'll be able to overlook that in favor of character dynamics and gameplay in one.

Any character's death = game over

author=LockeZ
An idea was brought up in another topic about making it so that any party member's death resulted in a game over, instead of the more typical style of only getting a game over after all members are dead. They were talking about the story when discussing reasons to do this, but I want to talk about the gameplay.

Very few games actually do this. The Fire Emblem series practically does this, by making it so all deaths are permanent - the game doesn't typically force you to restart the battle, but 99% of the time, you will. So figuring out what side-effects this would have in a more complex game is largely theoretical.

In Fire Emblem you can definitely see one way it influences gameplay design - the game's tactical combat gives the player the ability to partially choose which characters get hit by which enemies, and forces the player to take advantage of this. The player makes sure they only ever make each character fight enemies that they're defensively strong against, unless they can kill the enemy before it gets a turn. If the game didn't provide these options 100% of the time, it would be unplayable.

So as a game designer, it seems like you'd probably need to make sure the player can control who gets hurt by which enemies. In a non-tactical RPG, this would probably be done by some kind of threat/tanking system, rather than by positioning like it's done in Fire Emblem. But if one character is taking all the hits, like in a typical tanking system, does that defeat the purpose of such a system?

If the party members were all equally hardy and had no particular defensive strengths or weaknesses, that level of tanking/threat control wouldn't be as necessary, but the game would also be a lot more randomly punishing. If there are four party members and three enemies, there's a 1/64 chance for all three enemies to attack the same character. That is really obnoxious and feels like bullshit when it happens. Despite how rare it is, the player would always have to spend every action assuming this would happen, because if it does and the character dies, it's a game over. So they would spend a lot of turns healing anyone who's below 100% HP, and defending with anyone whose HP is below the maximum total damage all enemies can do combined if they all use their strongest attacks. If the enemies can crit, it gets even stupider.

How would you handle a system that gives a game over when one character dies? What other problems do you think it would face, and what are some ideas to deal with them? Would you treat status effects differently, or what?
Most of my games are centric on three or four characters, I don't see myself tackling this in a long time, but it does sound cool, and how I do love killing my characters thus.

Screenshot Survival 20XX

Lol thats fine, my main gripe wasn't even with your maps, just your attitude.

I know firsthand how it is to be judges cosmetically, people just do that, it stinks but its how the world is.

I just kept at it, I'm still not by any means an exceptional mapper, and I don't brag to be, nor do you.

But I'd never turn down feedback, you don't have to implement it, getting self important is one of those things you just don't do, it's illegal or something?

I just take it as it comes, mind you our situations vary differently, I have very impressionable parents.

Stylistic suck isn't that bad, especially from my perspective, hell if you're using anything other than rtp you've got my vote. I am the megalomaniac behind the celebrated sloppy mess that is Intelligence. It's my game I do for fun, and for this reason, I don't show screenshots of it much here, or if I do, it's because I've done something at least a little impressive, or I'm feeling like I haven't posted a screenshot in long enough.

Just gotta be more diplomatic, I know it's hard sometimes, I've been on the verge of fucking some people up on this thread because of dumb horseshit, but thankfully said dumb horseshit is usually my fault, eating humble pie will suck at the time, but if you admit your mistake everyone will think far more of you. You may also be less in tune with your psyche.

Just know that when people tell you how to map better here, or give you feedback, they're just doing it for your benefit, the reason everyone started grouping up on you is because you took everything in a very negative way.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4.
Fuckin love those games!

Dead Horde was a disappointment, zombie game that hooked me in because the atmosphere reminded me of Diablo II.

So it already had a way too high bar for it, mostly it was just repetitive after a very short period of time.

Do we seriously need to create a page for an incomplete game?
As in, are we completely and absolutely forced to do that?
No one's forcing you to, no. I don't see why you wouldn't, though, because 1) I assume you eventually intend to finish said game, and 2) it's a great promotional tool.
That and you aren't allowed to post your games thread on the forums, but hey, up to you!

of games, representation, and women's cheekbones

My original intent was indeed, to honestly just laugh at this threads existence, and then I decided, hey, maybe I could actively debate in this.

Corfaisus and mawk then proceeded to be virtually the most difficult people to debate with by using shallow counter-intuitive rebates and missing any solid points I was making and pointing out smaller things I said to get off the issue I was talking about, which seemed like a weak-willed defense as if they had nothing to say to that, so case in point, this thread is stupid. It's original message lost in the vat of unscrupulous idioms people have introduced, and it's become more or less a string of subtly-executed personal attacks with no redeeming epicenter that could lead to anything.

I've considered petitioning to have it locked several times, or at least moved to the Welp Welp section, because it has become useless, it's driving away most regular discussion, which is what a general discussion board is for, and is more or less a shitpit of clashing interest purged of any meaning or purpose by vitriolic idiocy and shallow dumbfoundedness.

(Also don't put it in the Welp welp section we already have enough degreaser and lighter fluid threads to keep a bondrama burning into 2054.)

How's that for some cheekbones.

It's not like this thread is at all redeemable now, the OP from what I can tell, has entirely left, and if not his recent posts have just been 'wow guys now you're talking about this?'. Its main point has been talked about, and then everyone just agreed to disagree because we weren't getting anywhere, and it's already been derailed and off-topiced so much it may as well be called 'Shitpit of Political Sandstone' by now.

Max is one of the obvious derailers but myself and others have also done it to death, purely because you can only argue about Ahri's cheekbones for so long before you get bored and just go browse sankaku complex or something and remember how cute she is in weaboo form.

Same sorta thing happens with loads of threads around here, Pastor's beef is also slowly veering into just a 'silly politics thread'.

But yeah, my typical ideology is if no one is being rational or logical then I'm just out, I've attempted explaining mindnumbingly simple things to bricks before, they take it in, these fucking people are another bucket of fish, I've seen only four people do anything slightly in the interest of sensible debate, aside from myself.

I mean this thread should have been a foreseen disaster to begin with... but no one ever listens to me!

Nooo, had to go and duke it out another 50 pages and gain NOTHING at all just to see how right I was.

The Antichrist wants his fucking job back.
