Release Something Weekend

Aye exactly: it's not called "Release Excellent Work Weekend" for a reason.

Really abuse the definition of "Something" and just release what you have, as is, WIP-style! ^^

Difficulty: Challenge vs Frustration

Oh, I just meant that while challenge can lead to frustration (and can also be rectified with difficulty levels) that this discussion is more just about the gameplay elements that are immediately frustrating and nothnig else. The sort of things that difficulty levels won't actually make any less frustrating.

Fake difficulty, like selecting random paths -half of which lead to death- won't be any less frustrating if an "Easy Mode" gave you more time to make your decision, for example.

Wasn't a dig at you or anything, for the record.

Difficulty: Challenge vs Frustration

LX, you're correct technically: anyone will get frustrated with a challenge being too great, and will ultimately just irritate the player if they can't defeat it.

This discussion is more about the two concepts from a development standpoint: things the developer can do that are just challenging, or things they can do that are likely only to frustrate people without really having the same "challenge" element.

should the player be able to name his character? Does it matter all.

Just remembered one thing that pisses me off as well! :D
As much as I do like the notion of letting you name characters in fully character-developed games (FFVI/IX), this only really works in text-only games.

When you come to FFX, they let you rename Tidus to whatever they want, then they go out of they way to make sure that his name never, ever, ever comes up in game. Now unless there's some weird conspiracy theory abuot why Tidus' name must never be spoken aloud lest the world explode, it just comes across as the developers trying to avoid your custom name from causing problems, while at the same time preventing you from ever getting to see your custom name in action. S'pointless. Might as well just force you to stick with Tidus.

should the player be able to name his character? Does it matter all.

Nono, I don't mean your Mass Effect/Dragon Age protagonists where you can choose the characters actions; I'd have put that into the first category, where the player gets to choose everything about the character.
I mean I get that, and don't have a problem with it; it's just storytelling for the sake of immersion for the player, ideal for RPGs. Can be great when done well.

What gets my balls in a twist is the characters that have set actions and choices and are otherwise unaffected by player choice, yet are silent. Think more Gordon Freeman or Link, where the character just blankly stares at everyone when they're being talked to.

should the player be able to name his character? Does it matter all.

If it's for an RPG that you can develop the character in a lot of detail, then denying the player something as meaningful as a name of their choice can be pretty hurtful.

However, this shouldn't be done in the name of giving the character a "silent, blank personality protagonist" vibe, as I don't think I even know anyone who likes that kind of character. It's just not conductive to modern storytelling.

However, I don't think the choice of naming a character can ever HURT a game, unless the developer takes it too seriously. Look at FFVI/IX for example, where the characters are fully fleshed out and have their own story arcs and default names. Letting the players name them is just a token thing, and mainly just for slipping the player into their favourite character if they wish. Or for repeat plays.

And because who doesn't rename Steiner "Rusty" so he goes around insisting that you stop calling him "Rusty" because his name is "SIR Rusty"! :D

VXA Pantomime: FFVI

Well I'm glad to hear that! Nothing better than sharing FFVI to the world, even if it is in parody form ^^

The Screenshot Topic Returns

We finally bothered submitting a Profile Page so we can join in the RSW event. Looking at getting at least the first couple of sections available after that.
Also finished making the visual-sound-effects and wanted to show them off 'cuz I think it's so fun, but screenies don't really look as good since it's animated :(
This is how the comic panels would look in game, although some will have more animation and such.
Still need to tart them up a bit though, but won't be doing that until after all panels have been finished.

Love the Voodoo Doll icon~

Anyhoo:
Using lack of photorealistic graphics to justify an absence in realism is a pretty piss-poor excuse, tbh.

If that's the case, why don't we just use Escher drawings as maps for all our games instead? Why bother having all these mapping tutorials about forests being spread our and sporadic to appear natural and realistic?

We're not talking about the stairs themselves actually LOOKING real, we're talking about the fact that the character is walking up a vertical wall. There might as well not even BE any stairs if we're going by your logic. Why not just let the character walk up all walls? Or on roofs? Or upside down?

Now if you'd rather put a rope or ladder instead of stairs, fine; but I don't see why you'd rather have vertical stairs "because realism is stupid", because vertical stairs....look utterly stupid o.o

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Realism looks stupid, you say?

Each to their own.
