Hey, I have a proposition for you all. I want you to make some games that aren't epic RPGs.
Please.
See, I look at released games like Illarion and I think "Well, some effort was put into this... but I'll never finish it, ever." I also know that most likely I have played the exact same 2k3 game before except with renamed skills and a different variation of the epic storyline. The fantasy epic is a tired genre that requires a developer to make content that probably 10% or less of the people who play it will ever see.
Excuse me, but while I don't necessary disagree or agree with your assessment of "epic fantasy" rpgs, you completely picked the wrong game to use as an example, out of all the games out there you could have picked. If you hadn't read it, Legends Of Illarion is based on an online community roleplaying game that I have played for years, so the whole theme and storyline and audience is mostly predetermined. Unlike 99% of rpgmaker games you are refering to, I didn't "choose" to make an epic fantasy as the theme for my desire to make an rpg game. In this case, it is the opposite, as the specific theme and story already exists in an online mulitplayer environment, and the rpgmaker is just a different medium by which I could present the culmination and history of our roleplaying and the unique features of "real" Illarion to a very specific audience. You or the game making community was not the main intended audience in mind.
While I'm not saying that the difference in origin of my game is supposed to make you want to play it, clearly you could have picked a much more generic rpgmaker game out there that actually fit the "I found rpgmaker and now I'm going to create the epic fantasy in my mind for everyone to see" description to make your argument against creating epic fantasy games for everyone.
Legends Of Illarion [Complete Game]
I didn't leave Illarion on bad terms officially, but yeah the game has some issues. I still kept contact on the boards and updated my project's progress there throughout the years. I had a pretty big impact on the game and the community back in the day, so I'm still an "icon" of sorts, and since LOI is the biggest and longest project created based on Illarion, they had no reason not to support it.
If you liked X, you might like Y...
If you liked Kinetic Cipher, Everlong, FF6, or Lufia 2, you may enjoy my new game Legends Of Illarion.
Kincetic Cipher: LOI has lots of puzzles (with skip option included), although the puzzles are indivdual and doesn't have an overaching theme (like cipher skills). LOI also has a colorful world and touch encounters too, but better mapping/chips and background story, and more mature characters and conversation, in my opinion.
Everlong: LOI is not quite as long, in overall length and individual dungeons. In Everlong, you might be frustrated with tough puzzles and endless random battles in needlessly long dungeons, whereas in LOI you have touch encounters, puzzle skipping options, and shorter dungeons. Both games are similar in the atmosphere of the colorful world and treasure-filled dungeons, and a simple resrouce/crafting system. LOI does lack the skill customization and systems though.
FF6: LOI has a similarly large ensemble of 14+ main characters to control and alternate usage with. Each character has their own skillsets, and a few such as "magic" and "knight" may be more common. In LOI, all skills are learned through leveling up, although usually once every 1 or 2 levels, so you will be entertained by new skills frequently enough. LOI also has a few modified borrowed ideas, such as "Multiparty Battles", "Choose Your Scenario", and an "Theatre Scene".
Lufia 2: Once again, the smilarity is the puzzles, although the frequency of puzzles in LOI doesn't increase until later on, and doesn't share a "theme" like Lufia's various tools. Also, same colorful atmosphere, consistent and balanced gameplay, and touch encounters. Also, like Gades in Lufia 2, LOI also has a few extra-hard optional battles in the middle of the game, as well as many near the end as well.
PS: I didn't finish KC and Everlong though, so it's just a brief comparison based on what I remember from many years ago.

Legends Of Illarion [Complete Game]
Well, now you know why I quit Illarion and created "Legends Of Illarion" instead. Okay, that's not really why, but anyways I'll pass along your comments to the current staff later.
Anyways, back to "Legends Of Illarion", which is based on events/characters over 5 years ago, so playing Illarion now won't really help you understand my game much, other than seeing some familiar geography these days. Just play "Legends Of Illarion" instead, but if you are interested in the full mythology behind it, you can read about the full story and the gods on the Illarion website :)

Legends Of Illarion [Complete Game]

Introduction
Legends Of Illarion is an RM2K3 game based on Illarion, the online roleplaying game. Illarion is a free, graphical fantasy game that focuses on true roleplaying rather than hack & slash. For more information on Illarion, visit http://illarion.org/ For more information on Legends Of Illarion, visit http://illarion.org/community/forums/viewforum.php?f=57
Legends Of Illarion was made primarily for Illarion players as an audience in mind, and is presented with characters and events based on Illarion, and has some references that assume the gamer has played Illarion. However, I've been working on and off on this game for about 5 years, and I think it is competent enough for non-Illarion players and RM2K3 players to understand the story and give it a try.
This game doesn't boast any outstanding graphics or complex systems, the characters are not focused on deeply, and the story isn't really anything special, at least not at first, and I'm sure you've all heard that one before. What I can say is the game's strength though, is that it is competent and balanced, and although it doesn't stand out in any one particular area, I think it's moderately good in all areas. The mapping is fairly good, it's mostly error free in game and text, and every dungeon has enough puzzles and treasures to keep exploration from being too dull.
It features approximately 25+ hours of gameplay time, a touch encounter system, tons of puzzles/skip puzzle functions, and a simple crafting system that allows you to create weapons/armour/items based on resources obtained after battle. It's an old school type of game, and I think you'll enjoy this game if you want to play a competent and balanced full game with some original and creative puzzles.

Story
(Background Story Of Illarion)
During the beginning of time, 5 entities known as the Elder Gods came to this world while fleeing from a powerful foe. They animated the world with life and energy and gave it the name Illarion. They created humans, elves, dwarves, and other races, and after a few centuries, they chose 11 outstanding mortals from the races and made them into what would be known as the Younger Gods. The gods and mortals prepared themselves well, but eventually the enemy of the Elder Gods found Illarion...
A great war ensued, as the enemy, led by Nadrook the "Prince Of Terror"and his demon armies, tried to conquer Illarion and its resources. The war lasted for decades and soon the gods of Illarion realized that their resources were by far inferior to the enemy, who continued to draw endless minions from their portals to another world. The gods soon realized that their only hope to win this war was to destroy the mortals. Led by one of the Younger Gods named Moshran, a small group sneaked behind enemy lines to try and destory the portals. Unexpectedly, Nadrook was waiting for them, rather than being on the main battlefield as the gods had believed. A fierce battle ensued between Nadrook and Moshran that lasted for hours and it seemed as if Moshran was growing weary. As Nadrook let his guard down to try and finish off his adversary quickly, Moshran sprung forth, not as weary as he pretended to be, and dealt a mortal blow to Nadrook. As Moshran beheaded Nadrook, a large explosion of dark energy burst forth from Nadrook's body and engulfed Moshran, burning and scarring him...
With Nadrook gone, the gods sealed the portals and defeated most of the remaining demons. The gods and mortals all celebrated, except Moshran who felt empty, and claimed Nadrook's sword and armour for his own. Moshran's once handsome face was now scarred with dark wounds that could not be healed completely, and his mood grew darker over the years. After the war, the mortals began to follow single gods whose personalities matched their way of life, but few mortals chose to follow Moshran even though he had lost the most for their freedom.
Eventually, Moshran swore to make the mortals pay for their ungratefulness and saught out the remnants of Nadrook's armies. With the sword and armour of Nadrook, Moshran became their master and unleashed them against the other gods. After long and difficult battles that devastated their beautiful world, the other gods finally managed to defeat Moshran, and together they swore an oath not to fight each other directly ever again. The other gods believed that good still resided in Moshran's heart, but only that he was corrupted by Nadrook's sword and armour. So the gods took these evil artifacts away and hid them well, and imprisoned Moshran in a cell deep within the Underworld until he would be himself again one day...
(Starting Point Of Legends Of Illarion)
Present day...
Many decades ago, when the early settlers had just arrived on the island of Gobaith and the town of Troll's Bane was only a few years old, a forgotten story of heroism and danger changed the world of Illarion. A small army of heroes came together to do battle against the first evil force to ever invade Troll's Bane. A dreaded lich named Drakhen Vorkalion had arrived in an attempt to summon the evil god Moshran into the realm of mortals. An epic battle would take place for the fate of Illarion, but behind the lich lies an even greater power and an unfathomable secret about the gods that will finally be revealed...

I know the download size is a little hefty compared to what you people are used to around here who download lots of rpgmaker games, but like I said, this was originally intended for Illarion players, most who will only download this one game, so it is what it is. Enjoy the game!

Hints
-The blue circles are save points. Stand on them and press the action button. Save often and save in multiple slots.
-When you first reach the town of Troll's Bane, talk to everyone to get some free tools and other goodies.
-Check your crafting tools periodically to see if you have collected enough resources to craft new items.
-If you are lost, talk to Zasmia in the tavern in Troll's Bane for advice. She should be available after Chapter 1.
-Early on, buy more bread/fish as they are cheaper than apples/grapes. You should only need a few fruits and use them only during boss battles.
-When Chapter 4 begins, start buying more fruits, as you will soon be fighting continuously and be forced to recover HP during battles.
-Once you are able to switch party members, try to use everyone once in a while, as you will eventually need them all to be strong.
