'Postmodern' RM Games

author=Yellow Magic
Well I guess it's mostly in the last 20% of the game where it gets 'postmodern'...I am crap at explaining such ideas (plus spoilers ;p)

I dunno. Nothing about MGS2 is unusual or not seen in so many George Orwell inspired conspiracy theory settings throughout the last two decades.

Information control, shadow organizations that observers aren't even sure exist. Justification of total information control as a "greater good" for society. 1984 with nanotechnology and the internet.

Postmodern, yeah, but I dunno about uncommon.

How planned-out should your RPG be before you begin?

author=Yellow Magic
I think most parts of a game should be planned beforehand apart from dialog, as analysing every single word used could make conversations seem a bit forced.

I analyse every single word, so that it doesn't seem forced. Dialogue in the medium of RPGs, indie or pro, has historically been subpar. You get smoother dialogue out of a FPS campaign mode than most RPGs.

If the script of an RPG's dialogue is not good enough for actors in film, it shouldn't be good enough for characters in a game. That's my opinion, anyway.

Now I'm not suggesting everyone should focus heavily on dialogue, but I wholeheartedly disagree that you should wing it.

I mean, I guess you're depicting a lantern swinging as it's hanging from his hand? If that's the case, you should probably draw the lantern in so the gamer can see that.

Waters Edge Preview

Hey, what's the reason for the light rattling? Also I think the darkness could be a little darker. As is, you can still see pretty good. Great mapping as always.

Cap'n Levels

The number of the level cap is irrelevant. It's all about when you're expected to reach that cap, if at all. If it takes the entire game to reasonably reach level 20, for a game which level 20 is the set level cap, it's no different than level 99, where you need to be about level 99 to beat the final boss. It's all about the natural progression of the party.

Midgame changes to that cap are a different monster. Personally, I think there needs to be a good reason for that change if the game has a serious plot. A weak example might be something like the removal of limiters in Xenogears.

Does longevity of a game REALLY MATTER?

Wait what? RM games have been criticized for lack of length? I haven't noticed that. Maybe if the demo is ridiculously short, but not completed games.

If we're talking about commercial games, mid to late 90's had a slew of 100 hour rpgs. Traditional rpgs really aren't that long anymore, for budget reasons. Mostly graphics related, I understand.

Funny, you get games that only make it on handheld ports with lesser graphics that resemble the great epics of yesteryear.

That's great news! Is the target completion date feasible at this point?

Well, it WAS feasible. No, expect it soon, though. Beginning of August. Need to do a round of testing, too.

How planned-out should your RPG be before you begin?

Plan out what is difficult/tedious to redo.

Improv what's easy to fix.

This is project specific. If internal causality is important to your plot, get it right get it tight.

The freedom to tweak and improv, which I find enjoyable, is always there, regardless of how much prep work you do. The prep work is there as a tool to help you make a better project.
