Custom Game Engine
I actually have a legitimate reason for actually being serious with this engine.
I got this new netbook with linux and I find out

That the engine doesn't run very well on Linux. Talk about a dire need of a font patch- but even if I got the font working, I can't say the same for the performance.
The problem is, this is going to be very difficult to implement. But the rewards are much bigger. I'm not exactly sure I have the time to be doing this, but I already have an engine made to take care of Graphics and Input. The job would just have me decode the RPG Maker files- displaying pictures and the like already works. I even already have an entity object system written. Plus it's already dual-core optimized so it runs faster on this little thing.
Oh yeah, and heres the source code to all of this. You'll have to add SDL and OpenGL yourself- the code won't compile itself.

All GNU licensed code of course.

There should be a "most obfuscated and inconvenient shop menu ever, but still a working shop menu" contest.
Battle systems for RPGmk2003
Yeah, but I doubt it's random. And there's caps too. Fire Emblem used caps to make sure one character couldn't possibly get more of a stat they're not supposed to have and each randomly adding point had different chances of increasing for each stat. But it was the frequency, a strong character has a higher chance to get more strength than a character who isn't as strong.
You did get an option in the recent Fire Emblems to make it so it's completely random. But you still have caps and it was intended to make the game harder for someone who has already played it through once.

Question re: 2k/2k3
If it was easy to get a Japanese rm2k3 I would have already. And I would have actually made some games written in Japanese for fun and for practice in my minor field of study.
In a perfect world Google gets you everything.
In a perfect world.
(Although for some reason Enterbrain does still sell RM2K but not 2K3 anymore as I have demonstrated in the links in my thread asking for the Japanese purchases of these programs).

It makes my eyes want to immolate themselves every time I crawl back into the depths of my Photobucket account...
Circa 2005!
That doesn't look too bad..
Unless you're supposed to be able to walk on that ledge to the upper right.
How do you like your hero?
I always seem to like the side characters for some reason. In many jRPGs I could care less about the main character, but then there's the side characters I really like.
In one of the games I had sort of worked on a couple years back, there was no distinct main character. It was the story shifting over about 4 groups of characters and they would run across each others' path from time to time. Each one had a goal, not a grand goal but just something they were going to do. Nothing epic like SAVE TEH WORLD but definitely a goal each one had.

I like the Tales of ... series for you tallying up everything you want in one go so you don't have to-

Honestly, what store in real life has you buying items one at a time and the person behind the counter asking you if you're sure before buying the item.

Ugh. Shopping! That bloody routine where you get to a new town and you know where you're supposed to go for the story, but first you have to spend 10 minutes or more traipsing around all the shops buying the exact same stuff you've got already except now it's bronze instead of iron. There's no strategy to it, it's totally unsatisfying, all it really does is eat up time before you go to the next dungeon. The only time equipment is even slightly interesting is when you're hunting for everyone's ultimate weapon at the end, in hidden areas and option dungeons and stuff. Every so often you get fun stuff like elemental swords and weapons that only work on undead, where you have to choose which is most appropriate, but 9 times out of 10 shopping for equipment is just boooooooo-ring!
Almost any RPG does that including Oblivion, it's not jRPG specific.
