Final Fantasy III "Remake" Coming to Steam (With Cards!)

I thought FF3DS was just fine, but I understand I'm definitely in the minority on this opinion. I think many people just don't like FF3 in general, and that's OK too. Many people played FF5 before 3, and expected the job system to be the same thing. FF3 was a lot more primitive though, and had more of an FF1 mindset when going about the new jobs... that is, the new jobs you get throughout the game are inherently better than the old jobs, and you're expected to 'upgrade' your party accordingly, whereas in FF5, every job is viable through to the endgame.

In any case, it's definitely not the best final fantasy, and it's kind of weird they insist on remaking it yet again. Fans mostly want a remake of FF6 or 7, but maybe it's best they don't; that screenshot of the new FF3 looks fucking awful. Yeesh.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

@grindalf That looks really awesome! Is there any other info on that project?

The Screenshot Topic Returns

@UPRC Looks awesome! One super nitpicky thing is Biggs' glove blends in with his pants a little too well. Maybe make the glove a shade lighter than the pants so the eye can differentiate between the two.

Or maybe just by projects I own? Would this be possible?

Just a thought.

I haven't been involved with RMN for a long time (although I've been coming around more often lately), but if you feel compelled to use my likeness, you have my permission!

So, the only way you're gonna be able to optimize this is by reducing the number of pictures shown, at least it seems that way.

One way you could achieve this is to optimize your algorithm. Instead of using a single picture for each tile, try to detect some commonly used patterns (ie 2-4 black blocks in a row, a 2x2 block of black, a 4x4 block of black, etc) and consolidate them into a single picture. Processing that logic would not consume nearly as many resources as displaying that many pictures would.

Or, if you're feeling gutsy, you could look into DynRPG, the mod for RPGMaker, and flex some C++ chops. You'd even have the ability to draw one pixel at a time, if you felt so inclined (I think?!).

Have you considered using RPG Maker 2003's frame function to replicate the original smaller resolution? That might cut down on the number of pictures that you have to Show, because the frame would be covering area that you would otherwise need to update.

This isn't a bad idea. A border of about 2 tiles around the edges would cut down the amount of pictures you need to display by half. Might not be what you want to do, but would probably make a significant impact.

Does updating the fog -have- to prevent the player from moving? Couldn't you update the fog on the fly while the player is moving, or no? Like, maybe only pause the player if he is 3 steps ahead of the current fog or something... I don't know if that would make it any better, but the choppiness is really what hurts the game I think.

@Jude: The game has a nice retro feel. You might already know this but I think you can improve the ground tiles. The texture looks like dirt but the color and straightness of the top layer makes it look like something else.

I am still apparently experimenting with the atmosphere I am trying to portray. This is a WIP.

This looks awesome!!
