Featured Game Give Away!

@Starmage, I'm glad you got your copy! I wasn't sure if this was a good way to give away keys, like is there some bot scanning internet 24/7 for this kind of stuff? But apparently at least some people were able to grab their copies.

@Knightowl, I updated the Discord link. And yeah, the full version has more leeway in its saves. You get one save free and there is the whole Lucky Coin system that gives you better chances in coin tosses in general. The game does give you safe and sure savepoint later on in the game. The original intent was that the early part is kinda like roguelike where the player is encouraged to try different things with each new playthrough, but I think it's not told well enough and pretty much everyone tries to force their early saves. The game and me is to blame for that, but hopefully you'll be able to get into the groove regardless. If there're any big problems, maybe I can help a bit.

The Featured Game Thread

Oh my. Thank you for the front-page feature! This came out of nowhere! I need to start paying more attention to how my game pages look if stuff like this is possible :O

So... Final Fantasy XVI anyone?

Yeah considering I don't even own a television, I most likely won't be getting a PS5 anytime soon either. New console games are becoming more and more available on PC too, so that might be just as good way to go about playing these games.

PS4 is worth it because of Bloodborne alone imo, but I guess that's just my personal bias. There are great jRPGs around too. Persona 5 felt like it perfected the turn-based battle system imo. Dragon Quest XI was very solid traditional jRPG and I've just recently gained a new love for Yakuza games after dismissing them since playing the first one on PS2 ages ago. Despite them looking like simple brawlers, they are very much jRPGs at their core and this is only made more clear with the upcoming sequel that has turn-based combat system too.

On topic, I heard FF16 will be M-rated, which is absolutely crazy. I didn't think the mainline series would ever go there. The trailer does give a darker look sure, but still a surprise. Also the director of the game is a huge Matsuno fanboy, so Ivalice vibes are probably going to be there.

What's everyone's opinion about the game so far?

The game was revealed a while ago and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Initially I was a little bit disappointed with the medieval approach, because I've grown to really like the more out-there-pseudo-futuristic worlds later Final Fantasies are known for and I was looking forward to seeing what Square came up with next. Then when the game looked a lot like many other darker fantasy titles from past 6 years or so, I was a bit bummed.

I knew I was going to like the game regardless though, because there has yet to be a mainline entry I didn't like. Since the reveal, the game has been in the back of my head and it has really grown on me. My disappointment has definitely turned into hype.

Seraphic Blue (English)

Don Miguel's RTP did the trick! Makes sense considering it's such an old game from that specific era. Thank you so much! Excited in getting into the game!

Seraphic Blue (English)

I'm not sure if anyone is reading this board anymore, but I tried to boot the game, but it complains that I haven't installed RTP, despite following the instructions here and doing just that. I have windows 10, so I wonder if that creates problems? Would love to play some old-school RPG Maker stuff, so that's why I'm still asking about this, instead of moving on! : O

[RM2K] The RPG Maker 2000 RunTimePackage (RTP) is not installed for this user.

I was trying to play Seraphic Blue, an older RPG Maker 2000 game, and I keep getting this error even though I have installed the RPG Maker 2000 RTP that should be necessary to play this game.

I've got Windows 10 if that complicates things?

Any idea what could be causing the issue?

Screenshot Survival 20XX

@Kaempfer, That's pretty much flawless screenshot. Really atmospheric with minimal effects. Really liking it.

@Giznads, that looks too cool. Those environments and gameplay really make me envious. : D Amazing audio too!

@KoopaKush, I second Giznads. Really giving me RE vibes. The enemy seems to fit really well with the tileset.

Just released a new version of the original Fear & Hunger:

Features you love in indie games

For me it's originality and seeing something I haven't seen before. That's the main draw for me be it an indie game or AAA game. I also really like ambitious projects. I don't mean ambitious in having AAA-level graphics or something, but games that try to make a big overall experience where equal amounts of effort has gone into story, graphics, gameplay and sound. I think it's pretty rare seeing this in indie games. Too often games fall into being one trick ponies. Like there are countless games that have one stand out feature. Those games rarely keep me invested longer than few hours. That's of course completely fine if you make a bite-sized little game, but too often I see that one trick being stretched for too long and wide.

My biggest issue with the current indie game scenes is that too many games try to replicate what some mainstream games have done before. Like how many metroidvanias can there be in this world? There are so many games in the world already, we don't need replicates of existing games with slightly different looks and feels. Especially these days as older games too are made more and more available to us.

What are Some of the Worst Games in the PS2 Library

@Marrend, oh yeah sorry. You're right that this list is about personal opinions, so nevermind that.

I tried to think up a bad game I played at the time, but couldn't really come up with any. I mean there are many 'meh' games, but I still wouldn't call them bad per se. (Even stuff like Devil May Cry 2 that's typically looked down upon had more positives than negatives imo)

I guess one of the more disappointing games to me was Baroque. I always saw it at the local game shop and was really intrigued by it. I looked it up online and heard how it's this obscure japanese hardcore old-school dungeon crawler with an unique setting and world. It was basically what you'd call a roguelike these days, but back then roguelike only meant Nethack and such, so the game sounded really novel. Finally I ended up getting it after thinking about it for like 6 months. It wasn't what I expected. The game was really tedious. All enemy encounters were just attack - try to move a little to not get hit - attack again. The base gameplay was very basic, no combos or rpg elements to give it depth or strategy, nor did the enemies do anything interesting either. The game had very original concept and world, but it felt very under-utilized with the bland corridor environments and next to no NPC interaction. I never played the game very far, so things might have changed later on, but yeah. I guess Baroque is my most negative experience on PS2, but I'm guessing it's more because of my own expectations. In my mind I had hyped up the game to be something else entirely. I guess I expected it to be something like Demon's Souls ended up being on PS3.
