Now I don't know whether to keep working on my game or wait to port it to MV...
I'm quite sure I'll be doing a commercial endeavour in MV ( iOS/mobile support alone is just... ), but I doubt I'll make the jump right now. I'm still using VX, after all. ^^
Of Dragoons and Orbs: Part I
Granted, even if I don't think gameplay/battle mechanics are my strongest point, I do like talking about it when I feel in a well... 'nerdy mood'. As for tying story and gameplay together, I just think it makes the game world feel more... alive. I felt I could have had a lot more flexibility with their skill sets had the game been made in VXAce, but I doubt I'll be porting Tristian over ( personally, I feel Yanfly's BEM still trumps YEA ).
And yes, magic lore ( even if there isn't much of it here ) and how characters learn their abilities is always interesting to discuss.
Before I read a book on Chrono Trigger published by Boss Fight Books, I never did think of an RPG's world as a living, breathing digital realm. It was just a place for the player to traverse, to exist, a place for them to carry out their adventures, fall in love, defeat the Big Bad. Never before did I look at it from another perspective. I suppose the best way to invest yourself in the game's world is to imagine yourself as an actual inhabitant, rather than the designer/creator making it strictly from a gamer's POV.
But I should probably save that for the next blog when I do Part II: Thieves and Scrolls.
@Dy: Magi, you say? I just think of War of the Magi there. XD But I'll find something.
@Red: Yes. discussing gameplay systems are always fun to delve into. I have several other ideas for battle skills, but I doubt VX has scripts to do so ( but Ace does >< ). So I'll just leave it for now.
@emmy: Ouch. Time really is running out for you, isn't it? ><

RPG Maker MV announced for PC and MAC
I don't see why people keep crapping on about VX/Ace's mapping system. Just as it is possible to make an awful-looking map with XP, is it possible to make gorgeous looking stuff with VX/Ace. I'm living proof of that. It's really the person behind the engine that makes the project stand out in the end, and not as a direct result of the engine's limitations. But that's just me.
But anyway, porting is a step in the right direction. I may skip over Ace entirely and end up using MV when my 2nd major game is complete.

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!
My motivation for my game is lagging a bit, so while I was browsing Derek Yu's site I cam across a link for Boss Fight Books ( he's writing a book for them about the development of Spelunky ) and bought the e-book of Chrono Trigger yesterday. This despite never playing the game before, it is turning out to be quite an interesting read and has sort of willed me to work on my own project again.
That being: Dialogue and scene writing and trying to flesh out the game's world. But I am touching up some of the pixel art as well for Tristian and trying to think of some new skillsets that is somehow still rooted in the game's world ( aka gameplay meets story ).

Nature of the Beast
I'd really like to see you talk about battle mechanics, Nova, seeing as you did such a stellar job of it in RoI. I think we'd all like to pick your brain on that particular subject. =)
FF12 remake. It's a... Thing?
I won't mind fighting Yiazmat and Hell Wyrm in HD. I just wish they would cut out Vaan and Penelo completely. ><

@Sal: That is a beautiful, beautiful RTP cave. I love how you spliced the rocks together. I agree with tinting too, its one of the most under-used features in RPGMaker.
I know about those hard edges. ><
For this screen, I've been using these trees for a while, but do they need to be tweaked? I know spriting trees in general is a pain to get right and I know atm it just blends a little too much with grass to stand out.
