Remake the Original Final Fantasy...

Would people please quit badgering this fragile genius?

What has set the bar for you concerning RMN villains?

Kefka's also a round character. He doesn't start out as all-powerful--he works for it, using his own cleverness and deceit. The first time we see him, he's walking through the desert and is clearly pissed at having to do something that he feels is beneath him. The audience might be repulsed by Kefka's actions, but we see things in him that we can identify with: he's clever, doesn't like authority, and feels that he's important in a world that underappreciates him. By the end of the game, he's used his cleverness to shape the world in his own self-image, and his narcissism, nihilism, and emptiness are reflected in the visuals of himself and the world. There's a great deal of characterization going on, which wasn't something that was present with previous Final Fantasy villains.

Another thing I liked about Kefka is that, thematically, he mirrors the conflict of the protagonist (okay, Terra being the protagonist is something that gets questioned, but she's both the character that the game starts and ends on). Terra has this power that she doesn't want, and her journey over the course of the game is about controlling that power for the sake of protecting others. Kefka seeks out that same power for the sake of satisfying his own nihilism. Terra uses that power in order to build up society and gain acceptance; Kefka uses it to break it down and isolate himself.

I don't think that Kefka is an AMAZING villain by writing standards, but the uses of such a clear theme and that degree of characterization were, for the time, a big step forward in writing for jRPGs. I'd still put him above most of the Final Fantasy villains after him in terms of characterization and gravitas.

The Mess-up A Wish Foundation

Granted; there is no political corruption or racism after the bears rise up and destroy mankind with their superior strength and unending thirst for blood. Salmon are still treated as second-class citizens, but all races of bears live in perfect harmony.

I wish for a turkey sandwich on rye bread with lettuce and mustard, and I don't want any zombie turkey, I don't want to turn into a turkey myself, and I don't want any other weird surprises.

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

From the entrance, head right next to the water. At the next fork, go right, then up at the next fork, then down at the next fork. You'll be at the flame. From there, go down over the gap, right (at the fork, just like the rest of the directions), right, up, up, down, left, down, right, and you'll go over the gap by the entrance.

Accepting Criticism

This is what's happening: that guy asked you for a review because he thinks he's a genius and he wanted you to tell him he's a genius. Since you didn't tell him he's a genius, he's wracking his brain for any possible reason why his game wasn't well-received, and so the only possible conclusion was that you must have rushed. In other words, he's a dick acting like you would expect a dick to act so you should clear your conscience and move on; your review speaks for itself.

Sweet--cool to see this here!

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

I think the town is the thing I'm most proud of design-wise. Glad you're liking it!

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

Sorry for the double-post, but I didn't make an official blog post about this and thought it would be good to notify interested subscribers (mainly you, pthariensflame). I added some merchants; check my edited blog post for details.

@Mizushimi: I never noticed that it doesn't put those graphics in the folders with the default rtp stuff before. I don't personally know of a way to separate that kind of stuff from the game file after it's been exported. My guess is that it's not showing up since I encrypted it; I'm sure there's a way around that, but I don't know it. I don't think there's anything that can reduce that lag, but I could experiment with some anti-lag scripts or just straight-up deleting some of the events on the lagging maps.

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

Alright, I did a test battle.

It's possible, but there are two things that are going to make this fight hard. 1) If Oliver spams EMP Generator, eventually you could find yourself in an awful situation. 2) You don't have any high mp pots for some reason. You can make due with what you have, but that means you'll need to use some elixers with Leif.

-Have Ivy cross slash every turn and heal in a pinch.
-Have Gainer buff Yvette with soul engine, then himself. If everyone's at full hp and him and Yvette have soul engine active, have him snipe. If people have lost less than around 1200 hp or are paralyzed, he should be healing with aura. Make sure that you keep the spirit buff up on him and Yvette; this means you might have to cast it twice in a row if they've been debuffed by phase shifter.
-Yvette should be casting lightning hammer every turn. If Gainer's paralyzed and people need to be healed, cast vitalize with her.
-Leif should shout Ivy, then Gainer. If a single person is missing a little bit of life (less than EMP Generator can take), have him use a high potion. Whenever someone gets low on MP, have him recover it. If he has nothing else to do, throw an attack out or something.

That's the strategy I used. I only tried one test battle since I need to start working soon, and I died. But, Oliver was really close to dying. He's got about 90k hp, and I lasted over 15 rounds before he EMP Generatored three times in a row. For the next update, I'll either make it to where you can leave or put someone in that can sell rings and pots. If you still can't beat him today, I'll get that update in tonight.

@Mizushimi: The graphics were mainly from RPG Maker VX's library, a program called facemaker, and an online character generator. I just assembled the tiles to make the maps (which are way worse than what a lot of people on this site can do). By doing this, though, I was able to make this game by myself, but it did take a year and a half to finish, then I've been doing little updates on it here and there for another year. I made all the music using PowerTab, then I would import it into Anvil Studio to add drums; these are both MIDI programs. I got Reason a while back, so now I can make MP3s that sound a lot better. Here's a few examples that may/may not end up in the new game:

I'll keep you in mind when I finish it if you want to do some testing for it. And, sorry to disappoint, but I'm just a guy with a unisex name. You can thank my parents for the confusion.
