What are you thinking about right now?

author=Gourd_Clae
I love mapping~ I think the eventing is what gets me. I have the skills to do it, I just never WANT to do it.

Gourd, we should totally join forces. I find mapping pretty tedious, but eventing is the part of game making I enjoy most - and it's also the one thing I like to think I'm good at.

I wish the same were true for scripting and art...

Remember when IRC was the bees knees?

This is just an idea and I'm not sure it is even possible, but I thought I'd throw it in anyways. There is this bar at the bottom of the Community Portal that Shows the currently active members, right? Would it be possible to put a similar, small window on the Community Portal that just shows the number (not the names, just the amount) of people who are currently in the IRC channel? That way, we would immediately know if there's something going on there, and it would encourage people to actually visit the iRC more.

Okiku, Star Apprentice

Alright, here we go:

Typos:
- Opening scene: Okiku says: "Maybe I should get some honest man's tounge while I'm at it." (Should be "tongue")
- Opening scene: Ryoko says: "I might not approve of that jest, but I undersand the underlying point you are making" ("t" is missing in "understand")
- In Sammiya, when talking to the little girl, Okiku says: "How is Ryoko is okay with being in that dumb tower all the time?"
- In the Sammiya Inn, when talking to the woman at the long table, Okiku thinks: "That would be great way to get my gorgon's tail" (An "a" is missing
__between "be" and "great")
- In the Ino Inn, the innkeeper says: "Well, if yer thinin' a' makin' a pilgrimage (...)" (Should be "thinkin")
- One of Okiku's battle start texts says "Caught you off-gaurd, didn't I?" (Should be "off guard")
- When using the skill Apprehension, Okiku says "You'll be sorry you ever meet me." (Should be "met")
- When using the skill Great Concentration, the in-battle text says "Great Concenrtation"
- The third level of the stat-lowering skill is called "Dispair" (Should be "Despair")
- Description of the Jeweled Ring: "(...) brings luck to it's bearer". (Should be "its")
- Description of the Mana Anchor: "It also resits the condition for three turns." (Should be "resists")
- Description of the Medical Herb: "Removes disease, infection, plauge, and cancer." (Should be "plague")
- Before the final battle, the Final Boss says: "Come on, then, lovlies (Should be "lovelies")
- Ryoko's Grand Barrier in-battle text says "Ryoko vaugely smiles?!" (Should be "vaguely")

Small bugs and oddities:
- In the text message that tells you the skill "Apprehension" has evolved, it says "Apprehensiveness" instead
- In the Sammiya Inn, the sleeping person turns towards you if you interact with her
- In the Ino Inn, in the innkeeper's first text box the word "Innkeeper" is not coloured yellow
- In the Kaminoyama Shrine, when the angel is angry at you, in her first text box the word "Angel" is not coloured yellow
- The location text in the Nishino Inn says "Ino Inn"
- The location text in the Nishino General Store says "Ino General Store"
- The shopkeeper in the Nishino General Store does not react to the Wand of Blasting
- People in the Nishino Inn do not turn back to their normal direction after being hit by the Wand of Blasting
- Ryoko's Grand Barrier prevents her other skill Never Die from being successful

I also found two (not game-breaking) passability errors of which I made screenshots:

A minor error, since it only allows you to walk on that single tile

The mushroom tile allows you to walk onto the lower part of the map

Some last things:
- Maybe it would be a good idea to turn off the Wand of Blasting while on the world map? It seems rather odd to be able to shoot over an entire island.
- In my opinion, the Final Boss is way too easy. I could just pertrify it all the time so it only managed to attack me once during the entire fight.

All that said, I think the idea of the Wand of Blasting is very cool, especially the many NPCs reacting to it. It could have been used for more complex minigames/puzzles, though. The music fits very well. I especially liked the world map music and the Sammiya theme. Even though the game is a bit grindy, the text bits during battle and the evolving skills add a lot of flavour to the fights.
All in all, a fun short game.

I hope this helps at least a bit.

Edit: Sorry, guys, I can't help you with such a spell check script. But at least I can try to help by proofreading...

Okiku, Star Apprentice

I just completed this game and took a ton of notes while doing so. Overall, I liked it and the humour actually did appeal to me. So, from my perspective: Well done.

Cashmere already pointed out the many general positive aspects and some flaws in his review, so I won't bore you by listing them again. However, I have this annoying talent to easily notice small bugs and typos, of which I encountered quite many.

I hope to find some time tomorrow to list them all for you. Until then: Thanks for this short but enjoyable little game. It was a_blast.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

@SuperShadyShadow:
The ice cave doesn't look bad, but I would suggest two changes: First, the water area on the lower left side ends before it reaches the wall, which makes it look a bit disconnected. Try shift-clicking or copying autotile parts to make it look like the water flows into/against the wall.
And second, your ceiling/higher area consists of the same type of tiles as the floor, which makes the map look pretty empty. Either consider using a different tile for the parts "above" the walls or even make them black, or if you don't want that, maybe put some additional stuff up there as well (crystals and the like).
I hope this helps at least a bit.

(P.S.: Try to avoid double posting. It makes the mods angry. Can't have that. ^_^)

Is it bad to add tons of custom stuff?

You have your points there, Rya, and I can understand them even if I strongly disagree. I, for once, would never lower a game's review score for using the RTP, but I would give games with custom assets a bonus to the score. From my perspective, this sounds fairer, although you have your good reasons to think differently, too.
Just in order not to turn this into a "is RTP good or bad?"- type discussion: I think it is not a bad idea to add custom things to your game, as long as it feels well-placed and not arbitrary, artificial or non-functional. Custom stuff that fits well into your vision of your game is usually a great thing to add. Just make sure not to get overwhelmed by it and end up achieving nothing and giving up, because that would be much worse. If necessary, you can always use placeholders and insert custom stuff later on, if you want.

@Dyhalto: I know what you did there! You're trying to distract the paladin!

Is it bad to add tons of custom stuff?

Although I agree in principle, I think there are two important question you should ask yourself before adding custom stuff. The first is "Does it help the game in any way?" Implementing your own graphics, systems etc. should always serve the purpose of enhancing your game, and not be there just for the sake of having it.
The second question is "Is it within the scope of my abilities?" The reason most of us are here is because we want to make games. Not every one of us can script or has a talent for art. Going overboard with features you simply aren't capable of creating is a bad idea, because it prevents you from achieving what you really want to do: making a game.

That said, if you can do them and make them work, they really spice up a game.

True, no doubt. But like you said, the question is whether you actually can make them work. Although I can somewhat understand people's reservations against games that use the RPT or the default battle system, I think dismissing a game just because of this comes dangerously close to a certain arrogance hobbyist game developers shouldn't have.
Then again, maybe I'm just biased here because I can't draw at all but still want to make games, so I'm dependent on the RTP.

New Shop Script, Completed and Added!

Woah, this looks awesome! Good job you all! I can hardly wait to try out the next version.
