"The Quest for RMN" - Sign Ups

I like this idea and am tempted to participate, but can you please first explain a bit more precisely what type of game this is going to be? Like, what are the players supposed to do, and what will you do, JJJ7?

Either way, I'll play as kentona! ... No? Yeah, I already thought so. Hmm, maybe I should be totally obnoxious and possess LockeZ then? Or Red_Nova? Or wildwes? Ooh, the possibilities...

Who's your favorite videogame character?

Non-RM games: William Escobar from Betrayal in Antara (old, obscure and bug-ridden, yet a great game nonetheless).
(Honorable mentions: The main character from Secret of Evermore, and Luigi.)

RM games: Stoic from Master of the Wind. No contest.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Oh man... Every time I visit this thread I feel like such a loser for having zero art skills...
Those maps look very good, yuna. The only odd thing I see is that the waterfall seems to hit some land at its bottom. (Oh, and why are there some trees growing on the walls?)

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Wow, that river looks amazing! Is it going to be animated in the final version?

The Importance of Racial Diversity

I agree with every single thing you say there, LockeZ. You're wording it better than I could.

RMN Album Vol.1 - Befuddling Tracks

Great Scott...

I admit this made me laugh.

Twitching the Trope

One small correction: Not every trope is necessarily a cliché. There are many tropes that are rarely used or allow for so much variety that they haven't lost their originality yet. (See this page)

About your Welf example: I know you're a much more experienced game developer than me, but what you're describing there doesn't sound very appealing to me. Maybe I'm mistaken or it's just because of the context, but those Welves sound like the traits that distinguish them from Elves were inserted just for the sake of it, not because there's a good (in-world) reason for it. But, more importantly, you make it appear like all Welves are the same: A species with (almost) no diversity or individuality and with common traits shared by all of them. Sorry to say this, but that is a cliché.
(If I misunderstood something important, please don't be angry...)

Personally, I think the best thing you can do to make your characters non-cliché is to make sure they aren't reduced to one single trait (or set of traits). Always add at least a second layer to their personality. That can also be done by combining multiple tropes (or variants of tropes) in one character. This can lead to very interesting personalities, even if the tropes used aren't as original when isolated.

The Importance of Racial Diversity

author=Liberty
I don't like racial tensions that much. It's stupid. People are people and I never understood judging people as less or more because of their skin tone or what they look like.

I doubt anyone with more than three brain cells would disagree with you there. But killing innocent villagers is also evil and stupid, and still such things happen a lot in games. If there is "fantastic racism" (elves vs. humans vs. orcs etc.) in fantasy, why is fighting over skin colour such a rarity?
If a fantasy world has a southern continent or desert region, it makes sense to have darker-skinned people living there. Now why wouldn't discrimination be an issue then? People fight over stupider crap all the time.
So yeah, racism is bad. Really, really bad. But that doesn't mean it can't be a theme in a game. Especially in more serious games, it adds a layer of sad realism - and at the same time, it can be a way to show how very stupid discrimination in general is.

RMN Album Vol.1 - Befuddling Tracks

It's more of a fun, creative topic than a serious project. Though, if someone would actually want use these lyrics for real songs, I would be the last person to say "no".

Thanks for adding yours to the list, Liberty!

RMN Album Vol.1 - Befuddling Tracks

There have been some occasions on the site where people rewrote the lyrics of well-known songs and changed them into something RMN-related. (Recent examples are Liberty's I Need A Misao or Girls Just Wanna Mak Gam, but I know I've seen more.) I thought it would be funny if we collected all these and added some new ones to create our own RMN "Album".
There are only a few rules for adding songs:
- The rewritten lyrics must have something to do with game making and/or RMN.
- The songs used have to be widely known. It's only funny if people are likely to recognize the original and see what you did with the lyrics. Indicate the original song's name and artist to make it easier to recognize.
- If a song is very long or repetitive, or if you struggle to write new lyrics for a certain part, it's okay to leave a part out. This is supposed to be fun, not a pain in the butt.

Now, go forth and mak songs!

I'll start by adding my own attempt:
