How long can you tolerate dialogue to be?
author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=1033.msg14580#msg14580 date=1210019275Storytelling does not have to be right up there with it. A lot of early RPGs aren't even story focused, so saying someone has to play RPGs for the story is silly. I don't play Oblivion for the storytelling. I don't play FF5 for the story. I don't play Chrono Trigger for the story. I don't play Secret of Mana for the story. It's not to say that RPGs shouldn't have a good story or whatever (I wouldn't like these games to have no story whatsoever). But you're saying that all RPG players are playing RPGs for the same reasons. If I don't care for the dialogue in your game but do like how the game itself plays, why should you force me to care for your dialogue/story? I'm not talking about you in particular, I mean in General. Then write a book. If you're making a game, above all you should be trying to make a game.
Fair retort, but consider that we're making RPGs here. Making a game should be the most important step, but storytelling should be right up there with it. There is certainly such a thing as too much dialogue, but if you have a habit of skipping dialogue or hurrily reading it without taking it in, perhaps that person shouldn't be playing RPGs.
And no one has given their thoughts on my excerpt up there?
How long can you tolerate dialogue to be?
I've never liked pauses in dialogue. I guess some other people do because it might simulate pauses in real dialogue or whatever, but I have a very fast reading rate (I never like reading an article along with someone because I'll want to turn the page and they're still halfway or less done with that page). If I'm hearing them speak, it's different, but not just seeing text on the screen. I like to use \> \< that command in RM to show the text instantly.
Kentona's method is interesting and I should look into that. What I tend to do is have cutscenes be skipped, so if for some reason you're replaying the game or died and have to go back to that point, you can just skip the dialogue altogether. Or even if you just don't care for it at all and want to play. I try to shorten the dialogue as much as I can, and tutorials I like to show pictures and lead them through it rather than explain everything in text.

How do you get out of bed in the morning?
I set my alarm clock to one time, I get up a while later after I finally decide to stop pressing the snooze button. The amount of sleep, when I sleep, and when I wake up varies greatly depending on the day, sometimes I'm home from work at 1 AM, sometimes I have the whole day off, sometimes I have to be up at 9 AM, sometimes it doesn't matter when. For example, I had been up until 5 AM working on a take home midterm that was due at noon the next day, so I had to be up at 9 AM. Not fun! If it's for work, I generally won't delay much in getting up, and I'll just force myself up. If it's school, I'll not be as tempted to get up. If it's raining and/or cold, I'll want to sleep even more.
After that I get up, go post on forums, check up on my favorite sites, take a shower, run off and get something to eat on the way to school/work, and that's mainly it.

Microsoft/Apple? Which one do you use?
My desktop is a Gateway with Windows XP on it. At work, I use a Dell with Windows XP on it. I'm in charge of a computer lab that has all Macs. I can't use Character Maker on a Mac so I automatically don't like it. Or maybe I can, but these computers are public computers so they can't install or run many exes.
Son of Bitch, Shit!
I really rarely ever swear. More offline than online, but it was like 3 times or so, so it's really rare. In fact, a coworker wanted to hear me swear because they never heard me do so.

I didn't play it for very long. 1 hour into the game and all I've accomplished was killing a tomato and getting lost in the city. The getting lost in the city took most of that hour, and I wasn't purposefully getting lost in the city or admiring the sights, I wanted to get on with the game. And seeing how people say it's like 80+ hours long, I don't have the time for that. I like the idea of the bubble above the heads of the NPCs that actually speak. So far, that's all I cared for.
Also, the words "Political story" completely turned off my desire to continue playing it. I don't like the music either, and normally I like listening to FF soundtracks.

I can't really afford to go getting a ton of stuff that I don't really need. I've been spending a lot more on those things now than I used to, but I still don't really go anime merchandise shopping. That being said, a Haruhi pillow would be nice.

I'm pretty messy. My camera sucks so only 2 pictures came out good. I can't preview pics because the screen is messed up, and I don't feel like taking more. But be aware that my room is messy, and on top of the clothing drawer is a tv that is useless, my PS2, tape, painting supplies, dead batteries, a Ninja Nonsense pink case, CD Player, video games and stuff.

My bed. This is actually an earlier photo I took just after going to an anime convention and buying myself these things. My bed has a multi-color cow on the pillows that makes noises when you press its feet. Not shown here unfortunately.

My computer. The monitor to the right is absolutely huge. I don't mean screen size, I mean the monitor itself. I normally use the monitor on the right for IRC and foobar, and the monitor on the left for internet and character maker. I miss having dual monitor when I'm at work.

This is the wall behind the computer. I don't keep much here, except a small storage bin that has an N64 on top of it, a big piece of matte board, and a drawing pad thing.
